Default 07/01/09 Michelle Kwan skating at Ice All Stars in Korea, August '09

IB Sports, Yu-Na's management agency just announced that MK is visiting Korea to skate on ice from August 14-16 at Ice All Stars 2009. She will prepare two gala programs for this show.
"I am really glad to skate at Ice All Stars 2009 in Korea. I am really excited to appear on this special stage with talented skaters. I am really looking forward to skate with Yu-Na in her home country, Korea." said MK through IB Sports.
After hearing this news, Yu-Na excitedly said "I have admired Kwan since I was young. It's really an honor for me to skate with her on the same stage".

Of course it would be amazing to see Michelle skate not one but two programs as soon as August! But you can put me in the "predictably hopeful fan fretting about a comeback" camp and say I worry that if this is true, it might indicate a competitive comeback is not happening. Why would she travel so far in August if she wanted to make a serious comeback? On the other hand, it would be perfect for her to slip in this appearance before starting her graduate degree.

I do have to say, that after Michelle's very, very long absence from public ice, it would seem weird for her first appearance to be in Korea instead of the United States? I know that doesn't make a lot of logical sense, it just seems weird to me. And that quote, with all the "reallys" and sentence construction, didn't seem like her, but it could have been a translation.

Nonetheless, I of course would be thrilled to see her skate again if this is true.

I agree with Miss Eggplant's sentiment about it being a bit weird that her first public appearance would be in Korea! I will be so jealous of those Koreans! Too bad I don't have gobs of money, I'd fly there if I could to see her skate! I am overjoyed!! =D =D We finally get to see her skate after all the training she has done.... I am thrilled! in some ways, I'm glad it will be in Korea because that means the fans will be recording it for Yuna on High Def, which means, MK, in High def, on the ice, for the first time!!

ETA: Looks like it's real? And Miss Eggplant, the original article is in Korean, it was google translated I think.

I think it's time to party =)

Didn't Johnny Weir skate in Korea before the start of last season?

Also, not sure what MK has to do if she does comeback(regionals/sectionals) but SA isn't til November, right? Plus, those cheesefest competitions have dried up in the US(as well as COI) since MK left. And I don't see MK asking for one just because she is coming back, though I'm sure the USFSA would try and scramble to make one.

Anyways, MK back on the is in itself cause for celebration!

It's so much wiser to do an exhibition to get all the hype of her first appearance out of the way before she actually competes. The pressure of just showing up at Skate America or some major competition would be far too great. This is a low-key way to flesh out all that anticipation and speculation from the first appearance and vault herself back into an international spotlight. What better place to do an exhibition than in her leading competitor’s home country, where she can scope out what Yu-Na is up to, and most importantly, be stacked up against Yu-Na and seen as a leading skater again. Smart lady.

I think a foreign appearance is a great idea -- much less pressure and much less press.

She's back skating!!!! *happy dance happy dance*

Now I have something I can look forward to again (coming off a long spell of not being able to play violin). It's nice, it's her b-day soon, but it's her who is giving us all a present.

Heart Finally!!

I can't believe my eyes!!!

This is a perfect venue for MK to get herself back out there; skating is huge in Korea, and unfortunately, there aren't any tours in the US this summer. (I read on another Board that Sasha will also be traveling to Korea in August to perform w/ SOI?)

I'm dying to know what she'll be skating to, what she'll be wearing, etc., etc.

This is soooooo AWESOME.

Wow that pic of her in her spartacus dress gave me chills...this is a BIG day guys, this is news we've been waiting for, forever.

OMG she's gonna be on the ice, and she's gonna skate...and she'll be wearing some sort of costume, and skating to some kind of music...with choreography and perhaps some jumps...WHAT AN IDEA!

Thank you, thank you chocolate bar (and attyfan) for presenting a point of view on the topic I hadn't considered before immediately freaking out. It's brilliant -- of course it would be a good idea for her to get the pressure of her first skating appearance over with in a wisely chosen environment, instead of skating for the first time in a competition this fall!

I have always said that the reason Michelle hasn't appeared on the ice since 2006 is because there has always been the question mark of a comeback, and she didn't want to skate publicly with watered down, technically less-than-stellar programs during her recovery or when she was busy with school. That could taint her reputation for staging a legitimate comeback later. But now she's been training hard, and apparently has her triples, so she can skate a few exhibition programs in August to give us a taste of what she can do. And hopefully intimidate the heck out of other competitors (sorry, had to throw that in there).

So excited now.

I just wanted to add, after analyzing this a bit more, that my first reaction that it's weird she's making her first appearance in Korea might be because of this: If she was not going to try to compete again, and instead grace us with exhibitions and shows, I would expect she'd have some sort of big show where she is the headliner, or even join or create a tour and travel around the U.S. That's why the Korean thing seemed weird.

But if she is using it as a way to get her first public skating appearance out there before trying to compete, this makes much more sense.

If she is plotting a comeback, do you think she'd perform her short program, long program, or both to get them out there for a viewing and for experience?

Sounds like the timeline is working out:

End of July, she officially tells USFSA she is returning and the news go public. Everyone freaks out for a while.
August: She skates in this show, possibly debuting one or more competitive programs.
Fall: Regionals, and then Skate America. By now everyone is hopefully used to her being back on the warpath.
2010: Do I really need to say?

Even if this doesn't all work out in this way, it's still fun as heck to dream about it.

I'm hoping Michelle does her 2006 LP as one of her numbers. I know I'm not the only one who has always wanted to see it. That would be fantastic, but anything she does is fine with me....even Carmen lol.
