Michelle to be on ESPN's "My Wish" series on Wednesday

Michelle Kwan was skating at the East West Ice Palace in Artesia, Calif., as the cameras were rolling. Skating with her was 10-year-old Danielle Krause of Chicago.

"Danny," as her parents and friends call her, used to be an excellent skater. But in October 2005 she had a brain tumor removed and she lost her sight and ability to walk and speak.

Kwan was taping an episode for an ESPN "My Wish" series, which makes its debut June 24. The series is a joint venture between ESPN and the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Ahh, I'm already stocking up on tissues. I remember watching these pieces last year, and I always ended up crying at the stories. SportsCenter aired one story a day throughout the week on their show of the different stories of athletes with Make a Wish children. I think I remember them also airing a show with all the stories, but I can't seem to find this on their schedule at the moment (though they could package them together into a show at a later date, I guess.)

I've already set my computer to cap each day's SportsCenter. I remember last year, they told you which athlete & child's story would be on the next day, and they were also shown in promos, so we should have advanced notice, at least.

Here's the ESPN-My Wish section of ESPN's site, with the stories from last year (the Seattle Mariners story was the one that made me cry every time I saw it.) I wonder if they'll do the same on their site this year, with additional first person accounts on their site:

The press release says that the each athlete/child's feature will air on SportsCenter from June 24 to June 29. "The SportsCenter segment will feature the reason for the wish, interviews with the kids and their families, and a behind-the-scenes look at the wish fulfilled, including the interaction between the youngster and the athlete." It also says that several ESPN multimedia platforms such as ESPN.com, ESPN The Magazine, and ESPN360.com will offer additional and complementary content related to the five wish-granting experiences. Be sure to check the press release for more info on the series.

This press release says that the key highlights from Danielle's wish were "Joined Kwan on the ice for a lesson. Kwan gave Danielle a personal tour of the displays of memorabilia from Kwan's career"

I love this show (even though it makes me cry!). The one with the kid who wanted to meet Derek Jeter had me crying last year. It's nice to see these athletes on a more personal level.

I saw that on tv last year...it was a tear jerker for sure. especially after Tedy came back after his stroke.......This year 2 of my faves....

Ooh, I can't wait to see this! I've seen several of the "My Wish" segments that they have done in the past, and they're all wonderful. I always imagined that Michelle would do one. Thank you for the tidbit Heather!

It's sad when just reading that can bring us to tears!.....actually watching it will be to much! Rock on Michelle. With all her other commitments, school/US Envoy...she still lends herself to this kind of stuff. Just makes me admire and adore her even more.

As I said in the first post, each story will air on a SportsCenter episode (airing at 11pm, and then repeated on the zillion airings of the show until the next day, lol) from Sunday June 24 to Friday June 29. We should know the day before which day Michelle's piece will air, since they promo the next day's piece on SportsCenter each night. Except Sunday's, which is the first one, but I'll watch Saturday's SportsCenter to see if they mention it. So, hopefully we'll know the day before to watch.

OK, I found this article which says that Jimmie Johnson's piece will be on SportsCenter on Monday...so that means Michelle's piece will be on any day BUT Monday.

Also, on the ESPN Media Zone's main page, is this note:

The 2007 edition of ESPN's critically acclaimed and award-winning SportsCenter "My Wish" series will debut Sunday, June 24 at 10:30am.

So, I don't know if they will air ALL the pieces during the 10:30am SportsCenter (which is two hours, it airs from 10:30a-12:30p) on Sunday morning, and then spread them out again during the week's shows. It might be a good idea to tape that SportsCenter, just in case?

Hey Heather, did you happen to cap SportsCenter today at 6 pm ET? I was watching it, and they showed a commercial for the "My Wish" series. They showed Michelle with the little girl (Danny). Towards the end, they showed Michelle, and she said "I think she's happy" or something along the lines of that. I can't really remember exactly when they showed it, but it was during the first hour of the show. Just giving everyone a head's up, they may show it again on tonight's edition of SportsCenter.
