Default Condoleezza Rice to Announce Michelle as nonsalaried U.S. diplomat

Quote:
Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will make an announcement regarding figure skating champion Michelle Kwan on Thursday, November 9, 2006, at 4:00 p.m. in the Treaty Room of the U.S. Department of State.
http://usocpressbox.org/usoc/pressbo...5?OpenDocument

Quote:
On Thursday, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice plans to name the 26-year-old Californian and daughter of Chinese immigrants from Hong Kong as a public diplomacy ambassador, said a senior U.S. official.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20061108/.../people_kwan_2

ETA: The specifics of the announcement. I changed the thread title as well to reflect the position rather than just the announcement.

I wonder what that could be?

Is Michelle perhaps retiring, and it is a matter of State that it's announced? Or could she be interning in DC this coming summer? Though that seems early for where she's at in her studies.

Or....maybe they're naming her a foreign ambassador?

Do you have to have a degree for that kind of work?

Is she becoming a US Goodwill Ambassador? Retirement plans wouldn't need a briefing by the Secretary of State, lol.

I would imagine and hope that this is about (rewarding) Michelle's good sportsmanship.

Maybe not, but she IS a National Treasure.

Would being a US Goodwill Ambassador interfer with competitive skating do you think, if she wanted to do that too?

She must be rep'ing the U.S. in some capacity. It will be terrific for Michelle, whatever it is. I'm excited!

I don't think being a Goodwill Ambassador would interfere. Angelina Jolie is still able to make movies and carry on her career, be married, and raise three children. She's a multitasker, but its possible.

I wonder what it could be. I remember ( I could be wrong my memory is not what it used to be) hearing that Michelle was quoted during her COI tour that she would have surprise announcement in the fall. It was the same time frame that the Oprah hoopla was going on.

anyway, hopefully, she's an ambassador of sorts. she already is in our minds i know, but everyone else will get to see her talent on a different level.

Whatever it is, it must be important/significant to involve the Secretary of State!

I'm most certain that she will be some type of representative for the US...in what context, I don't know.

Who knows, maybe Condi wants to resign, and nominate Michelle to replace her...hahaha

It's not retirement stuff if it has to deal with someone in politics.

She would be making that announcement I assume with the usfsa.org.

I cannot wait to see what it is. So Condi was a skater? Michelle and Condi have FS and school in common? Hmmmm....

So will this be aired on TV and what channel? IS anyone going to cap it and upload it to cloudnine?

That's right, the safety and well being of the country is partly in the hands of a former figure skater and concert pianist, lol. That makes her qualified to be a Secretary of State. I like Condi though, so no harm intended.

Wow ~ this is exciting! I can't wait to find out what it is. Michelle would make a wonderful goodwill embassador. Whatever it is, she will have my support and best wishes.

You've got to be kidding me! She's just a figure skater people, leave her alone! Dang this better not be anything more than a Goodwill Ambassador or some other useless token role, I want her stay involved in skating and Olympic sports not go into politics!!

She'd be a fantastic ambassador to this country, she represents the best we have to offer. Daughter of immigrants, educated, successful, beautiful, graceful. She's an American dream. I love it when women like Condi go to foreign countries and shake the hands of men who treat their own women like 3rd class citizens, or forcably remove their you know what's. I love it, I get filled with glee. I think Michelle would work good with children and would be inspiring.

You mean FOR this country right? You can't be an ambassador to your own country.

Roger Federer is also a goodwill ambassador for the UN. I think he even open a tennis academy or something in South Africa, his mother's native country.

I thought at first maybe Condi wants to run for Prez in 2008 with Michelle as her VP , then I remembered Condi told Neil Cavuto 2 nights ago that she plans to return to Stanford after her term is over in 2008.

Let's concentrate on the fact that this is an honor for Michelle, regardless of what our political opinions might be.

Michelle will bring honor to our country, whatever the task, because of who she is, and how she conducts herself, as she always has.

It should be obvious, by now, that Michelle is much more than "just a figure skater"!

"Useless token role"?????

Anyway, it could very well be that she will be a spokesperson for some project for children about physical fitness, or something along those lines ... or an ambassador of some sort, as has already been mentioned. I am certain it has nothing to do with any possible retirement. Whatever it is, I am sure it will be all good.

Maybe now that Rummy is gone, and Bush is nominating Gates, Condi will announce Michelle's nomination for Secretary of Defense, lol.
