It looks more obvious when Michelle is emoting on the ice than Sasha, Irina or Jenny Kirk.
Is it because Chinese poeple look more obvious when they're emoting instead of Caucasians because of their dark features?

|I I don't think it has anything to do with race or skin color. :rolleyes Michelle naturally emotes more than anyone else when she skates. Usually I love it, occasionally I don't. Jenny is pretty much expressionless as far as I can tell, and Sasha could use more animation in her face, although sometimes she really comes to life on the ice, but not consistently. I loved her expression in her SLC short program. In terms of "dark features", Michelle wears usually wears dark brown/taupe eye shadow and lots of black mascara to emphasize her beautiful eyes (see layback pic. above). Her eyes are IMO the most beautiful of her features, and she does a great job emphasizing them for dramatic effect. In her starting position she's usually looking down on the ice and then looks up at the judges when the music starts - ex. Taj Majal and Bolero. She grabs you in that way.
Oksana had some lovely expression or "emoting" and she's white. Miki Ando is Japanese and she has no expression.

I don't think race has anything to do with it. I think that Michelle just feels the music in a way that many other skaters don't. I love how she was singing along with the music in her ex program Falling. I also think she is comfortable on the ice and understands what the music is about. She seems to just gets into the music and let go. Her basic skating is very good so she doesn't need to think about that aspect once she has the routine down. She just seems to enjoy the skating and the music.
I think Jenny did really well with her Chicago routines. I believe music choices that a skater can relate to are really important. I loved Sasha's Don't Rain on My Parade routine. I am wondering if Sasha is not a little bit shy or self conscious because doesn't seem very animated when she is interviewed. I have always struggled with shyness and it does make me seem little stiff sometimes.
Sorry for rambling around on this topic.:)

Actually Irina emotes quite a lot too. It is all about appropriate emoting, and IMO Michelle is good at. Jenny Kirk emote nicely in her Chicago program too. Among all the skaters you mentioned, Cohen is the coldest and most self absorb skater on the ice. She is all about look at me, look how I can put my foot on top of my head, and nothing else much

Does that really say: "I can put my foot on top of my head"?

wow! well, i'll try to put what i've got to say in the most polite temrs i can muster. this is racial stereopying in reverse. can u imagine if a sasha pusher were to say that cohen was more emotive becaue she's white? the uproar that'd cause! and it shouldn't be any different for minorities. if we believe all people r equal, then we have to apply the same principles and hold everybody to the same standards no matter the race or ethnic origin.
secondly, i don't know about u, but to me that'd be offensive if somebody came up to me and said that my mastery of foreign langauges was due to being russian. i'd be pissed off, and that's putting it mildly, because that would negate all those countless hours i've been putting in trying to stay sharp. statments like that imply that penchant for langauges just landed on my lap, and through no effort of my own i started bubbling in english and french. the same with michelle. out of thousands and thousands of american skaters of asian descent only nnn came anywhere close to matching michelle's asrtistry. if u were right and being asian were conducive to greater emotivity, then skaters from asia would the most artistic and expressive, but that aint the case. i can only name fumie off the top of my head who'd qualify as artistic in my book. furthermore, to drive ur point to its absurd finality, michelle should be less artistic by the virtue of being american-born. had she been born in china or hong kong, she would be more artistic. but that's just non-sensical. i've never understood the ontological need some people have to reduce everything to race.

Mods, please close this thread.
This is so pointless. First, there were threads about Michelle's weight and among other things now her skin color. :rolleyes :rolleyes :rolleyes :rolleyes :rolleyes :rolleyes

I think when Chinese/Asians emote on the ice they look more conspicuous than Caucasians. They have dark features which contrast more against a white background, ice.
When Caucasians emote it is not as obvious, even with make up, because their light skin does not stand out against the ice.
This has nothing to do with race. It's just an observation based on facts. Dark features stand out against a light background.

I agree that this whole line of discussion should be closed - or moved to some kind of graveyard in the politics section.
First someone claims that "asians are better at emoting than non-asians" (paraphrased); then someone says that asians features are darker so their emotions are more visible on the ice, etc., etc.
This goes way beyond a discussion of "cultural differences", and its a bunch of crap.
