shame on you a, hijacking my thread to coo over S&Z. You know my thoughts on this: a non-Russian Oly champ is like a female President, it's not that it couldn't or shouldn't happen, I'm just too pessimistic/realistic to believe either will happen in my life time. Dull&Duller for gold, mark my words.
Now, all eyes back to Jack!!!!! There is more program/choreo info floating around the web, but it's about Chinese men and lower tier US pairs, i.e people I have to rack my brain and still can't recall even though I've seen them skate.

ok, what was that comment you made about them BG, the one about them skating to 40s harlem music & 50s NY gang themes? it was so funny......i laughed for days.
i agree. they've improved, but there is still this boring quality to them. i miss the days of 4 years ago where several of the top pairs teams were capable of great things. this team seems to go thru the motions & all but....yeah, i have nothing more to add. dull says it best~

I'm with you all on this one. I don't think there is much that can be done with D&D - they just seem to have terminally depressive personalities.
And as far has who do I most want to win OGM? it's ALMOST a toss-up. I think S&Z are as spectacular in their own arena as Michelle is in hers - and they emanate the same excitement, involvement and courage in their programs. I don't think I could bear to see D&D placed over them if they skate well. I hope they blow the top off the arena!

If Michelle is going to have TT choreograph her programs, the other ladies had better watch out.
I'm also on the S&Z bandwagon and would love to see them win the Olympics in 2006.

I( also agree there is nothing impressive or interesting watching T/M. They do absolutely nothing for me. Shen and Zhao on the other hand are exciting, breathtaking and they move me to tears. I hope they take home the OGM.

Dullmianina's fall in Skate America will surface in the Olympics as the feel good fluff of the Olympics to award Dullmianina & Dullinin the gold over Shen & Zhao. They will most certainly play that fluff up as much as Irina's struggles with health.

..............I hope I am spelling his name correctly and if not, thanks in advance for a correction......... Obertas/Slavnov are my favourites in current ISU pairs. They are still a work in progress,so a big upset for the Olympic gold is probably a huge longshot.I also like Shen & Zhao and the Zhang-Zhangs.Especially the Zhangs. Thanks for all the programme updates! I will probe around a bit and see if I can add some programme info to the stew.................Berthe,what I wouldn't give to see a now days, older, more mature Shelby Lyons............who didn't hang it up and continued to advance and with a dynamite male partner tangling with the new ISU pairs cream. There was a time when I thought by now Lyons and then Little Sister Steigler would be the toast of the ISU pairs town by now.

Thanks for the link. I guess it would be a good idea for people to post a link when they post the news. I wasn't questioning Cole per se, because I know she's reliable. For some reason I thought maybe she was joking, I guess due to the "Johnny Weird" comments and the fact that these are not typically male skater selections. No offense intended Cole!
These are very tried and true pieces, probably overused, but I'm sure Johnny will pull new life from them, as he always does.

June 17th, 2005, 08:10 PM
What is "girl music"? I once played bass guitar in a band and we did a few interpretations of songs originally wriiten by or written for female vocalists..........in what most of you would call a "redneck bar". No one called us cissies.I worked up my own improv interpretation of the 4 Non Blondes hit "What's Up/What's Going On" for another group I worked with,in a "redneck roadhouse". It quickly became one our most requested numbers, lace didn't suddenly appear on my drawers and no one wondered about my ............ummmmmmm romantic hobbies.I thought music was the universal language.I think Weir is cool...... but some folks do say I'm weird.Berthe, just wondering. The sport/performance artform is a bit bizarre and I'm still learning things. Sometimes it seems like raw bone c & w artists have more artistic freedom than figure skaters. Now if you ask me,that is weird.

SP: "The Swan" (same as Oksana Baiul, his idol, from 1994 Olys)
LP: "Liebestraum" by Frank Liszt
Who else has skated to Liebestraum in the past? By the by, Johnny has the gentle and fluid, but at times tepid and monotonous, skating style to suit the music. I predict the same choreog. as Otonal: lots of introspective arm-raising, touching the head and neck, feel the ice, blow a kiss, flick of the wrist and fingers, back spiral jump entry. I just hope he comes up w/ some different choreography, esp in his footwork which it seems he often trips in. What about extended spread eagles and stag jumps or split falling leaf?
Skating style wise, Johnny is less effeminate than say Sandhu or Jeff Buttle, at least in my opinion. It must be the David Wilson choreog, w/ the Canadians:lol :rollin

Liebestraum was used by Natalia Mishkutenok and Artur Dmitriev for their 1992 Long Program. It won them the Olympics. It was a beautiful program. I loved this pair and for me it was their signature piece. As I can recall in the program he was an artist and she was his muse.

Hmm, I actually thik Johnny is the most effeminate skater out there right now (his costumes don't help). Sandhu comes a very close second. But I actually think that Johnny skating is more dancy and not effeminate. He reminds me of Kurt Browning.

June 18th, 2005, 11:41 AM
Jennifer Robinson used "Liebestraum" for her LP in her last competitive season, IIRC. I also recall that the fluff pieces on CBC connected it to her then-upcoming wedding. When she skated it well, it was a good program.

I wouldn't say Jeff Buttle is feminine at all! In my opinion, he is a very manly skater.
I like Johnny because he's eccentric and different. I think these pieces will work well for him that he's chosen for the Olympic year! You've got to respect him and his determination and personality, if you agree with him or not.
Vinluvskwan
June 18th, 2005, 05:05 PM
G Man, you know what, I agree w/ you regarding Jeff Buttle. He has such a unique and dynamic AND DIFFICULT choreog that earns him humongous PCS scores. Jeff's style is perhaps the most modern among the top men skaters.
Parts of Johnny's choreog are very femme, but this actually works well to his musical choices. I sorta doubt he'll greatly alter his choreo as he still co-coached by Tarasova and from this past season before his injury hampered him at Worlds, the judges really rewarded him w/ PCS that were only surpassed by Plushy BEFORE Lambiel exploded.
Speaking of Lambiel, I agree he skated the "best" at Worlds, but his LP was marred by 2 blatant jump mistakes but his style is so-so; he has speed and out-of this-world spins in the Swiss tradition.
Sandhu is classically elegant but inconsistent until he showed the goods and finished 3rd at Worlds Free Skate. At his best he is as fluid as Lu Chen skating to Rach piano concierto.
And of course there is Evan...young, fresh, very Broadway but he can also handle European style (really dig his bullfighter turn in his SP from this past season).
We know about Plushy...erratic, operatic, dramatic but effective.
Who else did I missed?

June 19th, 2005, 08:45 AM
i don't see effeminate qualities in buttle's skating at all. he even gives a hearty handshake to his coaches right after his skate as opposed to a hug ;) .

..am I a little hessitant to list the Sasha gossip here? She's reported to be reusing last years "Dark Eyes" for SP and doing "something classical" for the LP. Call me jaded, but "Sasha's gonna skate to something classical" is about as predictable as "breaking news.... my cousin's hairdresser's son skates at Sasha's rink, and she said Sasha's gonna be wearing skates when she takes the ice in Torino!"

I watched some of the Broadmoor webcast...
Vise/Trent's LP seemed to be of the Cirque du Soleil type music (but it wasn't the same program as last year's Cirque program... I don't think it was anyway).
Miller/Brubaker's LP is to Addams Family
Rohene Ward kept last year's SP, and his new LP is to Piazzolla Tangos (the middle one was "Oblivion", I recognized the first one but I don't know the exact title).

"...and lately listening to a lot of music. I hope to decide something by this weekend on the music I will use. We will then cut it and begin putting in a program. I will get a new dress for the short program. We’re beginning to play around with the new dress for the long."
To me that sounds like she is keeping Dark Eyes for the short (same program, new dress), and she's very close to deciding on her LP music. She must have it narrowed to a few choices to be thinking about the dress already.

On USFSA, it is reported that Kimmie Meissner will be using a Rach piece ("Symphonic Dances") for her SP.
FSU reports that Obertas & Slavnov may be skating to "Snowstorms" for their SP -- and that TT & MM chose the same piece of music.
The ISU needs to make a rule that if two skaters are using the same music, it needs to fit into a nice little slogan ("Battle of the Carmens" or "Tournament of Toscas") IMO, Battle of the "Snowstorms" just doesn't cut it.

Thanks for the list, Skatephile!
I'm really excited about Bebe Liang's music. I thought Astor Piazzola worked really wonderfully for such an energetic and powerful style. Add Apocalyptica (a cello quartet best known for Metallica covers) and it sounds like it'll be a really exciting, fitting piece of music. :)
What is Michael Weiss thinking?! I love Beethoven, but I can't see how chopping up three of his most famous pieces will work together. Splicing pieces together seems to work best when the pieces aren't too well known; it seems like it'll be really jarring.

Ahhhhh, curse the off season and our hunger for premature info.
It's been revealed in an article that yet another skater has chacked their first choice and made another LP.
Lambiel has dumped Rach2 and chosen a "newer" version of 4 Seasons. Although it's different cuts, a different conductor, and even a different season, he called Caro for premission.
