I know everyone gets caught up in days off, the beach, picnics and bbq's...but I wanted to take a moment to remember the reason for this day. Our Fallen Hero's. From Bunker Hill to Baghdad we have been so fortunate to live in such a great country that has been defended by such brave men and women.

My Grandfather fell in the Soloman Islands in November 1942, my Mom really never knew him, but we remember him and all his fallen comrades especially on this holiday.

So Thank you to all who serve and defend our lives and lifestyles. I salute our fallen heros, may they have a special place in Heaven.

Thanks for the reminder bee!! My family has lost people in World War 1, World War 2, Korea, and Vietnam!!! I'm too young to have known any of them, but the older I get, the more I think of them!!! It's very clear that freedom, really isn't free, and I'm very proud of what each of them did to serve our country, and that they gave their lives for what they believed in!!! My thoughts go out to all those who are serving now, and to the families that wait for them to come home!!!

Thanks, beeg,
For reminding us that Memorial Day is not just BBQs and the 'beginning of summer'.
And thank you to all who have served - you are all heroes to me!

That's why I like the Annual Memorial day show from Washington DC on PBS.

They always do a good job of portraying what the price of war really is. Right now they don't need to show shots from the past. There were plenty of injured troops from Iraq in the audiance.

I was lucky....My Air Force hitch ended just prior to the Vietnam conflict really heating up. Some of my buddies were still bitter because they had their tours of duty extended during the recently ended Korean conflict.

Thanks to all the men and women in the armed forces who are serving our country proudly.

Semper Fi to all my fellow Marines out there. Keep up the good work devil dogs.

Marine Corps Hymn

From the Halls of Montezuma, to the Shores of Tripoli
We will fight out country's battles in the air, on land and sea
First to fight for right and freedom, and to keep our honor clean
We are proud to claim the title of United States Marine.

Our flag's unfurled to every breeze, from dawn to setting sun
We have fought in every clime and place, where we could take a gun
From the snows of far off northern lands, and in sunny tropic scenes
You will find us always on the job, The United States Marines

Here's health to you and to our Corps, which we are proud to serve
In many a strife we've fought for life, and never lost our nerve
If the Army and the Navy, ever looked on heaven's scenes
They would find the streets are guarded by, The United States Marines

As Andy Rooney said last night, "They didn't give their lives: their lives were taken from them." He oughta know; he was there.

But even those who were never at war, who were born long after their country was liberated, are grateful to our WAR DEAD.

I got this today from my e-friend Jacky, a Frenchman who was born some twenty years or so after the end of WW2:

Yesterday, Sunday May 29, it was in France Memorial Day. Martine and me went to Saint-James (Manche) to attend the ceremony of the American cemetery of Brittany. After the ceremony we flowered the graves of 9 American airmen who died for Freedom close from on our premises, around the city of Le Mans. We had much pleasure and emotion to be in the medium of the memory of these 4414 heroes who sleep in this places. All our thoughts converged towards these men with whom we owe our freedom, towards their families so cruelly tested, you and your country. We will never forget the debt that we have with respect to these men and with respect to the United States. We thought of you of this place. We send France to you our recognition and our gratitude.

Very sincerely.

Jacky and Martine. I always hear from Jacky & Martine on Memorial Day, and on D-Day. They always go to an American Military Cemetery in France (there are a dozen or so of them) and place flowers at the graves of strangers, to give thanks for Liberty.

They've been to the graveyard at Épinal, to pay their respects to my Daddy. (I met Jacky online, though a feller member of the war orphans' group to which I belong.)
