During my depressed times, i love nothing more than digging out the saddest songs that i can find, and listen to it while crying because this is the most effective way for me to let out what's pressurising me.

I don't know....i just think "Run to You" has such a sad chorus, the way Whitney's or Jasmine's voices lilting during that part just cause me to get teary eyed.

I think "Secret Garden" by Bruce Springteen is very mesmerizing and very sad as well. How about you guys?

Well, I'm showing my age and where my heart is these days. Although I'll admit some sad love songs still bring a tear to these old eyes. :)

1. Soldier's Last Letter (1940s)
2. Boys in Blue (another oldie)

I agree on "Run to You". It's beautiful though. For obvious reasons, I also like "A Moment Like This" and "Fields of Gold". Those two make me cry almost all the time. :)

There are quite a few songs which bring a tear to my eye, but these 3 are special:

Kissing You- Des'ree
When the Doves Cry- Quindon Tarver
Trouble- Coldplay

The first two are also on the soundtrack to Romeo & Juliet.

Ok, here goes nothing:

Calling all Angels from the movie Pay It Forward by Jane Siberry (not to be confused with the song by Train-which I love too)

Dance with my father again by Luther Vandross

I will remember you by Sarah MacLachlan (sp)

Missing You by P Diddy or Puff Daddy (whatever)

You Raise me up by Josh Groban

Actually it's kind of an uplifting song, but I always listen to it when I'm really sad.

#1 Wasted Time The Eagles

I swear Don Henley wrote this song for me..even though I was only 10

heres the Lyrics

Well baby, there you stand
With your little head, down in your hand
Oh, my God, you can't believe it's happening
again
Your baby's gone, and you're all alone
and it looks like the end.

And you're back out on the street.
And you're tryin' to remember.
How will you start it over?
You don't know what became.
You don't care much for a stranger's touch,
But you can't hold your man.

You never thought you'd be alone this far
down the line
And I know what's been on your mind
You're afraid it's all been wasted time

The autumn leaves have got you thinking
about the first time that you fell
You didn't love the boy too much, no, no
you just loved the boy to well

So you live from day to day, and you dream
about tomorrow, oh.
And the hours go by like minutes
and the shadows come to stay
So you take a little something to
make them go away

And I could have done so many things, baby
If I could only stop my mind from wondrin' what
I left behind and from worrying 'bout theis wasted time

Ooh, another love has come and gone
Ooh, and the years keep rushing on
I remember what you told me before you went out on your own:

"Sometimes to keep it together, we got to leave it alone."

So you can get on with your search, baby, and I can
get on with mine
And maybe someday we will find , that it wasn't really
wasted time

#2 Dance With my Father-Luther Vandross

#3 Auld Ang Syne (The New Years Song)
Its about remembering those people and times who have passed on. I always cry to that song.

I think the Dixie Chicks' "Traveling Soldier" is a pretty poignant song about a Vietnam vet who goes unmourned save by the sweetheart he wrote letters to. Other sad songs I have listened to are "Candle in the Wind - 1997" and "Fields of Gold" by Eva Cassidy.

One that immediately comes to mind for me is "In Dreams" by Lena Park. It's about meeting an old love in your dreams whom you can no longer be with in real life, and saying goodbye there. It's by a Korean singer, so here's the translation if anyone is interested:

---------------------------

Lena Park, "In Dreams"

What to say...
My heart is faltering
We are meeting as we were so long ago
I know this is just a dream
But if I could just stay asleep for an eternity

You're holding me...like before
"I know it's been hard for you," you comfort me
You hold my hand...tell me to rest
Even now, his hands are so warm, like they were before

I won't let him find out this is only a dream
I'll do it right this time
I'll make it so he can't think of anything else
Don't leave me this time...please just stay here with me
I won't wake up
I won't send you away

Please keep holding me...like before
"I know it's been hard for you," you comfort me
You hold my hand...tell me to rest
Even now, his hands are so warm, like they were before

Please answer me and tell me you longed for me as much as I longed for you

As you look at me enjoying this moment like a fool
With a sad smile,
"I'll leave you first this time," you tell me apologetically
Like me, he knew it was just a dream
Even so, thank you for at least meeting me like this

Please hold me, even as a goodbye
I'll smile for you
Even though I don't want to send you away like this
He's looking back at me as he goes
When I awake from this sleep I'll be alone again
He's going so far away
I'm beginning to realize...
I'll cry now...I don't want to send him away, but I can't see him anymore

Now my heart has settled a lot
Thank you
I love you
I'm OK
Don't ever come again

I was told *Gloomy Sunday* song in the 30's was so sad/depressing that it caused many suicides around the world.

Is this true?

realistic51
March 19th, 2004, 08:42 AM
Angkok, here are the words to Gloomy Sunday as recorded by Sarah M and Sinead O'Connor. And it is a song about suicide or thoughts thereof:

Sunday is gloomy,
My hours are slumberless,
Dearest the shadows
I live with are numberless
Little white flowers will
Never awaken you
Not where the black coach
Of sorrow has taken you
Angels have no thought of
Ever returning you
Would they be angry
If I thought of joining you
Gloomy Sunday.
Sunday is gloomy
With shadows I spend it all
My heart and I have
Decided to end it all
Soon there'll be flowers
And prayers that are sad,
I know, let them not weep,
Let then know
That I'm glad to go
Death is no dream,
For in death I'm caressing you
With the last breath of my
Soul I'll be blessing you
Gloomy Sunday
Dreaming
I was only dreaming
I wake and I find you
Asleep in the deep of
My heart dear
Darling I hope that my dream
Never haunted you
My heart is telling you
How much I wanted you
Gloomy Sunday.

Moonkitty I totally agree about that Dixie Chicks song. Gets me crying everytime.

Also "Angel" by Sarah Mclachlan gets me crying. I heard it while they were putting a dog of mine to sleep that had cancer several years ago. I don't listen to it much anymore for that reason.

Some of the pieces of classical music from LOTR's and the song "Into the West" get me crying.

And The Red Violin music is guaranteed to make me cry |I

Linkin Park always gets me sobbbing too...........................ok so that one im being cheeky about ;) . Sorry, wanted to lighten things up a bit.

My vote goes to:

Lost In The Moment
by Edie Brickell

The register stood open as the smoke cleared the room
And one man was lying over blood and a broom
The store door was swingin' in a midnight breeze
And another man ran through the dark and the trees

Lost in the moment of what he needs
Lost in the moment of what he needs

He ran past the motel threw his gun in the trash
Looked down through the darkness and counted the cash
The man at the store was trying to stand
Looked up through the white light and reached out his hand

Lost in the moment of what he needs
Lost in the moment of what he needs
Are you there can you hear me
Are you there

The ambulance arrived but it was too late
In the spin of the red lights they covered his face
He had a wife who was waiting watching TV in bed
Wondering why he wasn't home yet
Their baby was sleeping until the telephone rang
He woke and he cried out but nobody came

Lost in the moment of what he needs
Lost in the moment of what he needs
Are you there can you hear me
Are you there

She doesn't know what they'll do now now that he's gone
Try to get over and try to get on
Alone in the backyard a cool afternoon
The tree they planted has started to bloom
She wanted him to see this she wanted him there
She wanted to kiss him and brush back his hair

Lost in the moment of what she needs
Lost in the moment of what she needs

Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings. I've played it twice with different orchestras, and it's always moved me. However, I heard it on the radio the day after 9/11, while I was driving home, and I just lost it.

I think the saddest song is Elton John's rendition of Candle in the Wind that he did for Princess Diana's funeral.

I still do not know how he performed that live without breaking down.

Leaving on Jet Plane.

Anyone who's been in a long distance relationship will understand. After dating for 3 years in college, my hubby-to-be left for grad school while I finished up my last year of college. It was only 200 miles away, but I felt so sad the day he left and felt like I wasn't going to see him for a year. Of course, I did. And he didn't even leave on a plane, it was by car! :) But that song always brings back memories of how awful I felt that day 27 years ago....

"Why Goodbye" by Peabo Bryson - saddest break-up song

"On Eagle's Wings" - kills me everythime I listen to it...saddest funeral song I have ever heard

"This Woman's Work" - Kate Bush. Not only do I love this song, but I think it's sad because I remember the movie that played it and they played it during the sad part of the movie. "She's Having A Baby" . The wife, Elizabeth McGovern was having a very difficult labor and Kevin Bacon, the husband, was crying.

"The Water Is Wide" - by Carla Bonoff, I think. I first heard this when the character Gary (Peter Horton), from the TV show, "ThirtySomething", died. I was crushed! I loved that show, but this song is great...sad, but great.

This is a good topic!

OK, I have a few more...

Dr. Mr. Jesus - by Powersource...it's about child abuse. Oh my gosh, it's so sad! A little child sings it and she talks about being hit etc.

A Song For Mama - Boys II Men - LOVE THAT SONG...always makes me cry

Time Stands Still - Mary Chapin Carpenter

DMB chick, you made my teary eyed by talking about your dog and the Angel song. That would definately be sad and I don't think I would be able to listen to it again.

iloveskating.......I can relate. My boyfriend of 3 years (now fiancee) moved to Albuquerque to go back to school while I was finishing up grad school for 3 more months in Pittsburgh. It was right then that that song 1000 miles by Vanessa Carlton became really popular, it was even on our tape when I worked at the Gap. Here's part of the lyrics:

Makin' my way downtown,
Walkin' fast,
Faces pass and I'm homebound.

Starin' blankly ahead,
Just makin' my way,
Makin' a way through the crowd.

And I need you,
And I miss you,
And now I wonder...

If I could fall into the sky,
Do you think time
would pass me by?
'Cause you know I'd walk a thousand miles
If I could just see you...
Tonight.

Tears in Heaven is also a sad one. Reminds me of my uncle who passed away 2 years ago.

Another sad one is The Scientist by Coldplay. The lyrics aren't that sad but pair them with the temp and I feel like I want to shoot myself!!! This song reminds me of my best friend since I was 15 (I am almost 25 now) who isn't my best friend anymore always used to listen to this CD, so everytime I heard this song I would think of her and it made me cry. Here's part of the lyrics in case you don't know which Coldplay song it is:

Come up to meet you, tell you I'm sorry
You don't know how lovely you are

I had to find you
Tell you I need you
Tell you I set you apart

Tell me your secrets
And ask me your questions
Oh let's go back to the start

Running in circles
Coming up tails
Heads on a silence apart

Nobody said it was easy
Oh it's such a shame for us to part
Nobody said it was easy
No one ever said it would be this hard

Oh take me back to the start

I was just guessing
At numbers and figures
Pulling your puzzles apart

Questions of science
Science and progress
Do not speak as loud as my heart

Tell me you love me
Come back and haunt me
Oh and I rush to the start

Running in circles
Chasing our tails
Coming back as we are

Nobody said it was easy
Oh it's such a shame for us to part
Nobody said it was easy
No one ever said it would be so hard

I'm going back to the start

I used to work at a Hardware Store when I was in college and the owner always played country music. I am not a huge fan of country, but I got to know plenty of the songs, and I can't believe some of the lyrics.
There is one that really sticks out in my mind, but I don't know the title. It's about a girl and how her mother has helped her out through life and then in the end of the song the mom dies. I think it's called "How Can I Help You?" Maybe someone here knows? The lyrics are like" How can I help you to say goodbye?"
Anyhow, it's a very sad song.

I miss my days pushing buttons at the Hardware Store. :)

Nitts, you are thinking of "How Can I Help You to Say Goodbye," sung by Patty Loveless, and I agree it is sad. My saddest songs are:

"A Little Fall of Rain" from Les Miserables.
I believe the song goes by "Rose's Noonvale Song," it is from the book "Martin the Warrior" by Brian Jacques, and the way it is used in the TV series of the book is sad.

For me its:

"My heart will go on" by Celine Dion. The first time I heard the soundtrack and this song I couldn't stop crying. I got the soundtrack before the movie came out so I had an idea of what was going to happen in the end based on the lyrics from the song.

"Can't cry hard enough" Its the song they play at the end of Celebration of Life. I don't know the artist, but it makes me cry everytime I hear it.

"Don't stop dancing" by Creed

"One" by U2

I did cry when I heard "Into the West" the first time on the soundtrack when it came out before the movie.

The only song that has made me cry (besides Fields of Gold, of course lol) is "Never is a Promise" by Fiona Apple. It's such a despressing song about breaking up, but that's what makes it likeable. It makes you think a lot. And her voice is melancholy and sad in the song, too. Has anyone ever heard it?

I thought of another one that always makes me tear up. Its the "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" by Gordon Lightfoot. It tells the story of the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald on November 10, 1975 on Lake Superior. The wreck is still shrouded in mystery today. All 29 people aboard perished. Its a very moving song.

EDIT: I thought of another one: "After the War" by Paul Gross. This song is about a WWI soldier. It is so sad. Also "Ride Forever" by Paul Gross is kind of sad also.

When I was a teenager, 2 real tear-jerker songs were "Teen Angel" (girl killed when the car stalled on the railroad tracks) and "Tell Laura I Love Her" (young man killed in a car race while trying to earn prize money so he could marry her). I'm misty just reading this thread...

For me...it is the Carole King song.."Now and Forever" from "A league of Their Own"..I lost my best friend this summer...and I made a photo album/scrapbook for Martha's husband and her children...I met her the first day of college..Sept. 1967...and it was "friendship at first sight..."Anyway, I printed the lyrics of the song as the intro to the second half of the album...which was made up of all photos of us...from our wild college days, to her wedding, to the Baptism of her son where I was the godmother...the beach, bars, weddings...all that we shared in our 36 years of friendship...so the words of that song have a special meaning for me...

"I miss the tears, I miss the laughter, I miss the day we met and all that followed after,Sometimes I wish that I could always be with you the way we used to do...Now and forever..I will always think of you.."

My Dad loved country western music so I grew up listening to music by Johnny Horton, Tom T. Hall, Johnny Cash, & Marty Robbins. Comanche would always make me cry. When listening to Sink the Bismarck I still start sobbing when it says "the mighty Hood went down". I saw a documentary about the Bismarck and if I remember correctly only 4 men survived the sinking of the Hood.

OK this has got me crying now so I will stop posting and maybe come back to this thread later.

butterfly and Ybear...thanks...

Making the photo album was as much therapy for me as it was a gift for her family. I worked on it the day after she died...(She made the decision herself to stop treatment..dialysis, etc...everything was gone from complications from diabetes...) She lived about three hours from me...and going to see her in the hospital to say goodbye was one of the hardest things that I ever have had to do...She kept her humor to the end...She was an amazing person, a wonderful teacher...and she and I loved each other unconditionally...warts and all...I really don't think that I will ever get over losing her...Sorry for the ramble...

Milla Jovovich's album The Divine Comedy, released in 1994 is still one of my favorite albums of all time. In the song Clock, she expresses existential grief, written about Ann Frank, who was murdered for being herself....

Clock(Milla Jovovich)

I'm locked in a box
With a window and a clock
Sometimes I can't sleep
I watch the second hand feeding

Time is ticking, ticking
And the flowers are dripping, dripping
I am awake and I cannot sleep

All hail to the madman
Great murderer, great Aryan
Take all that you need
Take my life, my song, my breed

Fires are burning, burning
My people are yearning, yearning
I'm locked away to defy and die

Instrumental

I'm locked in a box
With a window and a clock
Sometimes I can't sleep
I watch the second hand feeding

Time is getting colder
And I'm getting older, older
Where is the face that I knew before

I am awake and I cannot sleep

All songs by the great poet Morrissey makes you sad. Morrissey, the lead leader of the group, the Smith's have many many great sad songs. Their most famous song was remade for the theme song for the show Charmed.

How Soon is Now...(The Smith's)

I am the son
And the heir
Of a shyness that is criminally vulgar
I am the son and the heir
Of nothing in particular

You shut your mouth
How can you say
I go about things the wrong way
I am Human and I need to be loved
Just like everybody else does

There's a club, if you like to go
You could meet somebody who really loves you
So you go, and you stand on your own
And you leave on your own
And you go home
And you cry
And you want to die

When you say it's gonna happen "now",
Well, when exactly do you mean?

Oh kwanette - thankyou for sharing about your friend. She does sound amazing and that photo album must have been stunning because of all the heart involved. I'm terribly sorry for your loss.

Yeah - the song from A League of Their Own...Love it!

I'm still crying just thinking of when Joanna Glick skated to "I Will Remember You" that night! I was looking through some old skatng magazines and found her in some of the competition pictures! That was fun.

For some reason I have alot of them, but the few that really get me, and that I was lucky enough to live are
Silver Springs (S. Nicks/Fleetwood Mac)
Beatiful Child (saw this Live and cried)(F.Mac)
Say Goodbye (such a beatiful song) (F.Mac)
Goodbye Baby (how does S. Nicks sing this every night?)
This one always gets me:
Sometimes Love Just ain't Enough, Don Henley and Pattie Smith.

Lyrics to Beatiful Child:
Beautiful Child
Beautiful Child
You are a beautiful child
And I am a fool once more

You fell in love when I was only ten
The years disappeared
Much has gone by since then
I bite my lip, can you send me away
You touch
I have no choice
I have to stay
I had to stay

Sleepless child
There is so little time
Your eyes say yes
But you don't say yes
I wish that you were mine

You say it will be harder in the
morning
I wait for you to say, just go
Your hands, held mine so few hours
And I'm not a child anymore

I'm not a child anymore
I'm tall enough
To reach the stars
I'm old enough
To love you from afar
Too trusting. . .yes?
But then women usually are

I'm not a child anymore
No, I'm not a child, oh no
Tall enough to reach for the stars
I will do
As I'm told
Even if I never hold you again
I never hold you again

Lyrics to Goodbye Baby
Don't take me to the tower
And take my child away
It was I who was
The hourglass
And the sands of time like
Shattering glass went past me
Like a tunnel to the sea

And I who went to sleep as two
Woke up as one now only you remain
You'll close your eyes and travel back
To the time when the light went fading fast
And the words you'll never, never forget, oh no
As you slipped away

Goodbye baby
I hope your heart's not broken
Don't forget me
Yes I was outspoken
You were with me all the time
I'll be with you one day

And I who went to sleep in tears
Woke up in tears, for all of the years
And I who never, never said goodbye
As I slipped away

Goodbye baby
I hope your heart's not broken
Don't forget me
Yes I was outspoken
You were with me all the time
I'll be with you one day

Goodbye baby
I hope your heart's not broken
Don't forget me
Yes I was outspoken
You were with me all the time
I'll be with you one day

Yes, I'll be with you one day

And Say Goodbye

So you face yesterday
Thinking on the days of old
And the price that we paid
For a love we couldn't hold
I let you slip away
There was nothing I could do
That was so long ago, yeah
Still I often think of you

I fall down, I get up
And I've always had to fight
Everything that was wrong
For the things that were right
And now I've finally found my way
Now I know just what to do
Once you said goodbye to me, yeah
Now I say goodbye to you

It's so hard to find your way
When the lies come around
Still it happens every day
So don't let it get you down

Just a time within a time
Just a scheme within a scheme
A little world within a world
Is a dream just a dream?
And now I've finally found my way
Now I know just what to do
Once you said goodbye to me, yeah
Now I say goodbye to you
Now I'd best be on my way
Before the night turns blue
Once you said goodbye to me, yeah
And now I say goodbye to you
Once you said goodbye to me, yeah
Now I say goodbye to you

The Prayer Cycle (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00000ICMK?v=glance) by Jonathen Elias. I first heard this album a day or two after 9/11 on NPR. I cried through the entire album. There is an interesting review of The Prayer Cycle quoting some of the lyricshere (http://inkpot.com/classical/eliasprayer.html)

Elgar's Cello Concerto especially as performed by Jacqueline
du Pre. It expresses the anguish and loss Elgar felt during WWI.

Barber's Adagio. Especially the sung version Agnus Dei which is etheriel.

I have not posted in a long time but I just came across this thread and it really got to me. My saddest songs are ones that remind me of pets we have lost.
Just over a year ago our beloved 10 year old Golden Retriever was killed in an accident. I had just stopped in the vet's to pay the bill for the emergency treatment and cremation and when I got in the car the song on the radio was Darryl Worley's "I Miss My Friend". That just tipped me over and I sat in the parking lot and could not stop crying. Still can't listen to it with dry eyes.

The other one is from about 6 years ago shortly after we had to euthanize our 17 year old terrier. Wynonna's "Come Some Rainy Day" played on the car radio while I was driving her to the vet for the last time. It always made me think of her when I would hear the words:

"How could I know
That everything would change
Except the way I miss you
Come some rainy day

I'll sit and laugh with friends
At what we've all been through
But I still catch my breath
When someone mentions you

We move on
Put those dreams away
Baby I still miss you
Come some rainy day"

Definitely Mariah Carey & Boyz II Men's "One Sweet Day"
........."and I know you're shining down on me from heaven, like those many things we've lost along the way, and I know eventually we'll be together, One Sweet Day." - I remember when Princess Di died and they played that during the funeral of the BBC broadcast, very sad.

Mariah Carey's "Butterfly" & "Whenever You Call"

Amy Grants' "I Will Remember You"

Any mellow Catholic Song at Mass such as the one mentioned above: "On Eagles Wings"

Luther Vandross "Dance With My Father"

The first time I heard Kathy Mattea's "Where Have You Been" I was driving in my car and had to pull off the road because I I was crying so much. It's about losing a spouse when you've been married almost all of your life and feeling like you've lost everything.

"My Immortal" and "Fields of Gold" and Garth Brook's "The Dance" get me every time.

"How Great Thou Art"

I have another one to add to the list that make me sad.

At the end of the movie Ned Kelly, the version with Heath Ledger and Orlando Bloom, is a song called "Shelter for my soul" by Bernard Fanning. to hear the lyrics after watching the movie just makes you sad.

Here are the lyrics to it:
The end of my days when I’m called to go,
Into the open arms of the Holy Ghost
To have lived such a life as I have known
Fortune follows me, but I’m brave no more

For the great mistakes I will surely pay
I’m running low and the devil is on my trail.
When fate delivers me all I’m askin for,
Is a place to rest and shelter for my soul

Oh if I could spend my days,
Free from the prison of your gates,
then I could die happy then

Oh if I could spend my days
Free from the shadow of my name,
Then I could die happy then

When I’m released from this mortal hole
I’ll take my leave but I don’t wanna go

When fate delivers me all I’m askin for,
A place to rest and shelter for my soul

For anyone who is interesting in the movie, here is the website for it: www.ned-kelly.com/index.php (http://www.ned-kelly.com/index.php)

In addition to the many that have already been mentioned, "Concrete Angel" by Martina McBride gets me every time. It's about a little girl who has been abused, but nobody steps in to help her before it is too late.

The other song that makes me cry everytime I hear it is "Butterfly Kisses", but I can't recall who it is by.

#3 Probably Wouldn't Be This Way

"probably Wouldn't Be This Way"

Got a date a week from Friday with a preacher's son
Everybody says he's crazy
I'll have to see

I finally moved to Jackson when the summer came
I won't have to pay that boy to rake my leaves

I'm probably going on and on
It seems I'm doing more of that these days

[CHORUS 1:]
I probably wouldn't be this way
I probably wouldn't hurt so bad
I never pictured every minute without you in it
Oh You left so fast
Sometimes I see you standing there
Sometimes it's like I'm losing touch
Sometimes I feel like I'm so lucky to have had the chance to love this much
God gave me a moment's grace
'Cause if I'd never seen your face
I probably wouldn't be this way

Mama says that I just shouldn't speak to you
Susan says that I should just move on

You oughta see the way these people look at me
When they see me 'round here talking to this stone

Everybody thinks I've lost my mind
But I just take it day by day

[CHORUS 2:]
I probably wouldn't be this way
I probably wouldn't hurt so bad
I never pictured every minute without you in it
Oh You left so fast
Sometimes I see you standing there
Sometimes I feel an angel's touch
Sometimes I feel like I'm so lucky to have had the chance to love this much
God gave me a moment's grace
'Cause if I'd never seen your face
I probably wouldn't be this way

Probably wouldn't be this way

Got A Date a week from Friday with a preacher's son
Everybody says I'm crazy
Guess I'll have to see.

It's such a sad song:(

"The last thing I needed,
the first thing this morning-
was to have you walk out on me."

Don't really know the title of this song, but it's a hell of a tear jerker.

Willie Nelson does a version of it that will have you on your knees.

IMO, NO ONE sings a song like Willie or Ray Charles.

I agree about "I Will Remember You" "Angel" (what's up with Sarah McLauglin?) and "Tears in Heaven"(saddest ever) Also, the song "Dust in the Wind" by Kansas makes me want to shove my head in the oven. I remember when Angela Nikidinov skated to it, I was like, what on earth is she thinking????

Ave Maria kills me too.

Title: It Can't Rain All The Time
Artist(s): Jane Siberry

We walk the narrow path, beneath the smoking skies.
Sometimes you can barely tell the difference between darkness and light.
Do we have faith in what we believe?
The truest test is when we cannot, when we cannot see.
I hear the pounding feet in the streets below, and the,
And the women cry and the,
And the children know that there,
That there's something wrong,
And it's hard to believe that
Love will prevail.

Oh it won't rain all the time.
The sky won't fall forever.
And though the night seems long,
Your tears won't fall forever.

Oh, when I'm lonely, I lie awake at night and I wish you were here.
I miss you. Can you tell me is there something more to believe in?
Or is this all there is?

And the pounding feet, in the,
In the streets below, and the,
And the window breaks and,
And a woman falls, there's,
There's something wrong, it's,
It's so hard to believe that love will prevail.

Oh it won't rain all the time.
The sky won't fall forever.
And though the night seems long,
Your tears won't fall, your tears won't fall, your tears won't fall
Forever.

Last night I had a dream.
You came into my room, you took me into your arms.
Whispering and kissing me, and telling me to still believe.
The very emptiness of the burning seas against which we sail our darkest desires...

Until I felt safe and warm.
I fell asleep in your arms.
When I awoke I cried again for you were gone.
Oh, can you hear me?

It won't rain all the time.
The sky won't fall forever.
And though the night seems long,
Your tears won't fall forever.
It won't rain all the time
The sky won't fall forever.
And though the night seems long,
Your tears won't fall, your tears won't fall, your tears won't fall
Forever.

Most of the songs I cry over have been mentioned already. Whenever I'm down and just want to play sad songs, I choose a country CD...Garth Brooks' "The Dance" always gets me, all I have to do is think of the 1st line. Another one- I think it's Reba Mcyntire (??) who sang,"If I'd Only Known". And "I Love the Way That you Love Me"...anyone know who sang that? I do like sappy songs!

Kwannette-I agree with all who said that was a very touching tribute. Momentos like that are treasures. I lost a good friend a few years back. A group of us made a scrapebook for her parent, pics they had never seen. It meant so much to be able to do something. We included the lyrics from "The Dance".

kwanette--

Your story got me all Varklempft. {{{{ hugs!!!! }}}} :angel

For me, "Tears in Heaven" is close to the top of the list. At the top of the list is a song by Mary Chapin Carpenter, "Only A Dream." It gets me every time.

Here are the words:

Only A Dream
by Mary Chapin Carpenter

I can recall the sound of the wind
As it blew throught the trees and the trees would bend
I can recall the smell of the rain
On a hot summer night
Coming through the screen

I'd crawl in your bed when the lightning flashed
And i'd still be there when the storm had passed
Dead to the world, to the morning cast
Its light all around your room

We lived on a street where the tall elm shade
Was as green as the grass and as cool as a blade
That you held in your teeth as we lay on our backs
Staring up at the blue and the blue stared back

I used to believe we were just like those trees
We'd grown just as tall and as proud as we pleased
With our feet on the ground and our arms in the breeze
Under a sheltering sky

Twirl me about, and twirl me around
Let me grow dizzy and fall to the ground
And when i look up at you looking down,
Say it was only a dream

A big truck was parked in the drive one day
They wrapped us in paper and moved us away
Your room was no longer next door to mine
And this kid sister thing was old by that time

But oh how our dreams went bump in the night
And the voices downstairs getting into a fight
And the next day a silence you could cut with a knife
And feel like a blade at your throat

Twirl me about and twirl me around
Let me grow dizzy and fall to the ground
When i look up at you looking down
Say it as only a dream

The day you left home you got an early start
I watched your car back out in the dark
I opened the door to your room down the hall
I turned on the light
And all that i saw
Was a bed and a desk and couple of tacks
No sign of someone who expects to be back
It must have been one hell of a suitcase you packed

Twirl me about, twirl me around
Let me grow dizzy and fall to the ground
When i look up at you looking down
Say it was only a dream

There is no better version of "Broken Vow" than the original recording of it as done by Lara Fabian (famous for her "I Will Love Again" pop hit). I cried so hard when I first listened to that song. :(

Fiona does have some great stuff and "Never Is A Promise" is brilliant. I think my favorite, saddest breakup song is "I Love You, Goodbye". It's just brilliant! Get's me teary eyed everytime I listen to it cause I can relate to it. "Don't Take The Girl", "The Dance" and "I Can't Make You Love Me" are probably my favorites by any country artist.

But the nerve-wracker for me, and this is coming from someone who got SOOOO tired of all the 9/11 "stuff" that happened (the coverage and talk etc, I feel very sorry for the victims and their families and all though.) is a song by a very little known artist Mary Fahl, previously the lead singer of the group October Project. She has just a haunting voice. Anyways, she does this song called "The Dawning of the Day" from the soundtrack to the movie "The Guys" and she re-wrote the lyrics to the folk tune of the same name. The movie is about a firefighter who lost all of his men during the 9/11 incident and how he talks to a reporter to help him construct a fitting eulogy for them. Something along those lines. The lyrics are so fitting, tragic, and true, and the song so deeply emotional. I reccomend that anyone find it an download it. If you can't find it, I'll post it in the downloads section. ;)

I just love how music can open up so many emotions. Two songs that stand out to me are "Lightning Crashes" by Live, which was written after a death of the band member's friend from a car crash...and "Mad World" by Gary Jules, from the movie Donnie Darko (a remake of the Tears for Fears 80's--extremely "pop" sounding song).

Here are touches of the lyrics from both songs:

"Lighting Crashes" -Live

Lightning crashes, a new mother cries
her placenta falls to the floor
the angel opens her eyes
the confusion sets in
before the doctor can even close the door

Lightning crashes, an old mother dies
her intentions fall to the floor
the angel closes her eyes
the confusion that was hers,
belongs now, to the baby down the hall

Oh now feel it comin' back again
like a rollin' thunder chasing the wind
forces pullin' from the center of the earth again
I can feel it

Lightning crashes, a new mother cries
this moment she's been waiting for
the angel opens her eyes
pale blue colored iris, presents the circle
and puts the glory out to hide, hide

and....

"Mad World" Gary Jules version (same lyrics as TFF)

All around me are familiar faces
Worn out places, Worn out faces
Bright and early for the daily races
Going nowhere, Going nowhere
Their tears are filling up their glasses
No expression, No expression
Hide my head I want to drown my sorrow
No tomorrow, No tomorrow

Chorus
And I find it kind of funny, I find it kind of sad
These dreams in which i'm dying, Are the best I've
ever had
I find it hard to tell you, I find it hard to take
When people run in circles it's a very very.
Mad World, Mad World

Verse 2
Children waiting for the day they feel good
Happy Birthday, Happy Birthday
And they feel the way that every child should
Sit and listen, Sit and listen
Went to school and I was very nervous
No one knew me, No one knew me
Hello teacher tell me whats my lesson
Look right through me, Look right through me

....

Yes they are very sad songs, but very well made sad songs!

Two out of three ain't bad.

Any song that tells someone they want them, need them but are never gonna love them is sad, Sad and mean.

I Go To Sleep (Sia's cover)

When I look up from my pillow
I dream you are there with me
Though you are far away
I know you'll always be near to me

I go to sleep
And imagine that you're there with me
I go to sleep
And imagine that you're there with me

I look around me
And feel you are ever so close to me
Each tear that flows from my eye
Brings back memories of you to me

I go to sleep
And imagine that you're there with me
I go to sleep
And imagine that you're there with me

I was wrong, I will cry
I will love you till the day I die
You were all, you alone and no one else
You were meant for me

When morning comes again
I have the loneliness you left me
Each day drags by
Until finally my time descends on me

I go to sleep
And imagine that you're there with me
I go to sleep
And imagine that you're there with me

OMGosh, this thread is a blast from the past!

When I was in college, one of my girlfriends collected a pile of 45 rpm singles (yes, I'm that old) of really sad songs that we called "<name>'s masochist pack" that she would listen to whenever she got depressed (and she got depressed a lot because she had a real jerk for a boyfriend). The only song I remember from it was "Worst That Could Happen" by The Brooklyn Bridge:

Girl, I heard you're getting married
Heard you're getting married, this time you're really sure
And this is the end, they say you really mean it
This guy's the one that makes you feel so safe, so sane and so secure
And, baby, if he loves you more than me
Maybe it's the best thing
Maybe it's the best thing for you
But it's the worst that could happen to me

I'll never get married
Never get married, you know that's not my scene
But a girl like you needs to be married
I've known all along you couldn't live forever in between
And, baby, if he loves you more than me
Maybe it's the best thing
Maybe it's the best thing for you
But it's the worst that could happen to me

And, girl, I don't really blame you for having a dream of your own
Hey, girl, I don't really blame you
A woman like you needs a house and a home, baby
If he really loves you more than me
Maybe it's the best thing
Maybe it's the best thing for you
But it's the worst that could happen

Oh, girl, don't wanna get married
Girl, I'm never, never gonna marry, no no
No, it's the worst that could happen
The worst that could happen
Oh, girl, the worst that could happen

I'm misty just reading this thread...

For me...it is the Carole King song.."Now and Forever" from "A league of Their Own".."I miss the tears, I miss the laughter, I miss the day we met and all that followed after,Sometimes I wish that I could always be with you the way we used to do...Now and forever..I will always think of you.."

OMG--that came out right before my honey died. I still can't hear that song and it was like 17 years ago. The other one that was playing during that time was Amy Grant's song--"I will remember you." Oh my...the pain is still there.

And when I hear "That's what friends are for" all I can think about is my dear friend Clark's memorial service. When I think about "We are the world" all I can think about is my dear friend Carlos's funeral.

Oh, I'm in a funk, now. Whose idea was it to bring up these songs, anyway? ;)

These songs will make me cry no matter what.

1. Angels Among Us (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WENJbSPSmqg) by Alabama; I heard this song for the first time after a very close member passed away, and it still gets to me.

2. "Over the Rainbow" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P7XBU5NBUXQ) by Judy Garland (the Carnegie Hall version); There is such a range of emotion in this particular version of the song. I prefer the original, but this version is the one that makes me cry.

3. "No One is Alone (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UfQnw96t_Yg)" from Into the Woods; I loved a good, sad, show tune. That's what I usually listen to when I'm down, and this one from Into the Woods is one of my favorites, especially the Baker's wife reprise (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Hh3l39Ifwg&feature=related).

ITA about Angels Among Us.

Also for me, the Kermit song about being green. I don't know why, but I cry every time.

And one Christmas song I heard on the radio only one year. I don't know the name of it, but it was about a little boy wanting to buy shoes for his dying mother so she would have nice shoes when she met Jesus. I was driving the first time I heard that and nearly had an accident I was crying so hard. After that, every time they played it again that year I would have to change the station. I could never listen to it again. It was that sad.

The Muppets really do have some gut-wrenching songs, don't they? In the right mood, I cry over the "Rainbow Connection," too. Also, "I Don't Want to Live on the Moon (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yIntrayvOlc)" and "Saying Goodbye (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=penzsVANV0k)."

"Christmas Shoes"
by Bob Carlisle

It was almost Christmas time
There I stood in another line
Trying to buy that last gift or two
Not really in the Christmas mood
Standing right in front of me
Was a little boy waiting anxiously
Pacing around like little boys do
And in his hands he held
A pair of shoes

And his clothes were worn and old
He was dirty from head to toe
And when it came his time to pay
I couldn't believe what I heard him say

Sir I wanna buy these shoes for my Momma please
It's Christmas Eve and these shoes are just her size
Could you hurry Sir?
Daddy says there's not much time
You see, she's been sick for quite a while
And I know these shoes will make her smile
And I want her to look beautiful
If Momma meets Jesus, tonight.

He counted pennies for what seem like years
And cashier says son there's not enough here
He searched his pockets franticly
And he turned and he looked at me
He said Momma made Christmas good at our house
Though most years she just did without
Tell me Sir
What am I gonna do?
Some how I’ve got to buy her these Christmas shoes

So I layed the money down
I just had to help him out
And I'll never forget
The look on his face
When he said Momma's gonna look so great.

Sir I wanna buy these shoes, for my Momma please
It's Christmas Eve and these shoes are just her size
Could you hurry Sir?
Daddy says there's not much time
You see, she's been sick for quite a while
And I know these shoes will make her smile
And I want her to look beautiful,
If Momma meets Jesus tonight.

I knew I caught a glimpse of heavens love as he thanked me and ran out.
I know that God had sent that little boy to remind me
What Christmas is all about

Sir I wanna buy these shoes for my Momma please
It's Christmas Eve and these shoes are just her size
Could you hurry Sir?
Daddy says there's not much time
You see she's been sick for quite a while
And I know these shoes will make her smile
And I want her to look beautiful

I think this song still gets to my mom since it always reminds her of her parents, and when she was younger.

"Slipping though My Fingers" by ABBA, and also in the musical "Mamma Mia!"
"Cinderella" by Stephen Curtis Chapmen is kind of sad to me, especially since one of girls(one of Chapmen's daughters)who inspired the song was killed in an accident.

Both songs are about children growing up, and time passing by so fast.

There was a school shooting in Jonesboro AR just before the one at Colombine in Colorado. They played the theme from Titanic at every funeral. So that one gets me, but you don't hear it much anymore.

I've been sitting here, reading all these wonderful posts, racking my brain trying to remember the song that had me pulling to the side of the road because I was crying so hard I couldn't navigate my car any longer (in fact when the song ended I just sat for a few moments to get myself under control again). Thanks to mayamichelle I now remember (I have these senior moments wherein I can't seem to make my memory dredge up certain things)--"Where Have You Been" by Kathy Mattea. This song never, ever fails to make me cry-no sob--would be more accurate. Then "Where Were You When the World Stopped Turning" by Alan Jackson (for all the obvious reasons). :bawl

Where were you when the world stopped turning is one that will always get me. Except i think we all now know the difference in Iraq and Iran

I guess I have had sad songs from different times in my life. Careless Whispers used to make me cry years ago, but not so much anymore. Movin On by Rascall Flatts haunts me. Speaking of 9/11, I recall one song that always makes me cry even now is One More Day. I imagined how many people wished they had one more day with their loved ones, one more chance to say "I love you," one more chance to put your arms around someone you loved, if only you knew you would never see them again.

Last night I had a crazy dream
A wish was granted just for me
It could be for anything
I didn't ask for money
Or a mansion in Malibu
I simply wished for one more day with you

One more day, one more time
One more sunset, maybe I'd be satisfied
But then again, I know what it would do
Leave me wishing still for one more day with you
One more day...

First thing I'd do is pray for time to crawl
I'd unplug the telephone and keep the TV off
I'd hold you every second
Say a million 'I Love You's'
That's what I'd do with one more day with you

One more day, one more time
One more sunset maybe I'd be satisfied
But then again I know what it would do
Leave me wishing still for one more day with you

One more day, one more time
One more sunset maybe I'd be satisfied
But then again I know what it would do
Leave me wishing still for one more day
Leave me wishing still for one more day
Leave me wishing still for one more day with you.

Saddest song in the history of music..........Tchaikovsky's 6th Symphony. Hands down. It has it's moments of abandon and joy, as most of our lives have had these moments, but the finale is a moment of profound sorrow and recognition of one's mortality.

Title: Turn To Stone
Performer: Ingrid Michaelson

A sad/happy song only because it was featured on the 100th episode of Grey's Anatomy.

We've Only Just Begun by the Carpenters. We sang that song at my 8th grade graduation in 1971 and every time I've heard it since I cry.

I also cry whenever I hear Landslide by Stevie Nicks. It's the part about getting older that makes me cry, well that plus PMS that makes me feel sorry for myself.

1975 by Stevie Nicks

I took my love and I took it down
I climbed a mountain and I turned around
And I saw my reflection in the snow covered hills
The Landslide brought it down

Oh mirror in the sky, what is love?
Can the child within my heart rise above?
Can I sail through the changing ocean tides
Can I handle the seasons of my life?
Mmm mmm I don’t know
Mmm mmm

Well I’ve been ‘fraid of changing ‘cause I
Built my life around you
But time makes you bolder
Children get older, I’m getting older too

Soo (Interlude)

I’ve been ‘fraid of changing ‘cause I
I built my life around you
But time makes you bolder, children get older
I’m getting older too
I’m getting older too
Soo take this love, take it down
Ohh if you climb a mountain and you turn around
If you see my reflection in the snow covered hills
Well the landslide will bring it down, down
And if you see my reflection in the snow covered hills,
Well maybe, the landslide will bring it down
Well well the landslide with bring it down
