I saw a teaser trailer for Goblet of Fire, online. It looks really good, and also dark again like the 3rd one, which I thought was the best so far.

I'm reserving a copy at my local Border's. I got it for the same price as Amazon, but don't have to pay shipping to get it on the 16th.
Now I can't decide when to read it. When Book 5 came out, I had planned on holding off for two weeks to have whilr recovering from surgery. THat didn't happen. I made it to Monday night and finished in the wee hours of Wednesday morning. (I was stuck with the Lord of the Rings trilogy borrowed from my brother during recovery. THey are almost impossible to read while on morphine. :x )
This year, I'll be finishing up a summer session of graduate classes. I'm afraid if I start it, I'll let studying go out the window and be completely distracted. I wonder if I'll make it until vacation 2 weeks after the release? THen I can take it on vacation.
I guess I can always wait to pick it up to avoid temptation. Waiting will be hard, but the second hardest thing to do is avoid being spoiled.
ANyone else in the same position as me?

calculusfan - I am totally in the same boat as you are. Thankfully for me, the book comes out at the end of my vacation so I will have all weekend to read it. :)
You could check with Borders to see if they would hold it for 2 weeks for you and then pick it up as you go on vacation. That is what I would have to do because I know that I could not put it down.

DMBChic -- you're gonna love 'em! I can almost assure you that you'll be done waaaaay before Book 6 comes out. I jumped on the bandwagon just a couple weeks after 5 came out in 2003, and read all of them in 2 weeks (while working full time) -- yup, they're that good! Enjoy :D
After just finishing Roth's "The Plot Against America," I'm ready for some light (and not nearly as freakishly "ack, damn nightmares" real) reading....tonight's the night I start re-re-re-reading the series in preparation for the 16th. Go Harry! :rollin

The release of Half-Blood Prince on July 16, the sixth of Rowling's seven-book fantasy series, should confirm that Harry Potter mania is essentially a celebration of reading, a phenomenon created by children, not marketers.
That's what I love about these books and J.K. Rowling. When I was a kid, I felt like I was one of very few who enjoyed reading more than watching TV or playing games. Now, in this crazy age of computers and video games, this phenomenon is more important than ever. Bravo, J.K.!

I would post it here to see which House we MKForumer's
would belong in. :)

It sorted me into Gryffindor. :D Last time I took it,
I was in Hufflepuff, hmm... my mood must've changed
since them. :lol
Congratulations on making Gryffindor!
Basically, you're brave, daring, chivalrous, and pretty much.. an all around good person. Of course, some see you as a goodie-two-shoes. But hey, it's true! You're really good at winning, and normally always come out as the hero. Everybody likes you.. except, maybe, the Slytherins. You're too perfect. No, really.. You're too perfect. It's annoying to watch you win, repeatedly. Oh well. Be proud anyway.

Congratulations on making Hufflepuff!
You're one hard-working, loyal, compassionate little thing, aren't you?! Well, there are some good things, and some bad things about that. Bad things first, so after you're let down and crying your eyes out, plunging into a state of depression, I can cheer you up with the better facts. Bad thing, your house has a horrible rep for being a bunch of wimps. Sorry. Good thing, it's not quite true. You're tough! It's hard to be loyal! And remember, Hufflepuff is you! Don't be ashamed of yourself.

In Canada, a store accidentally started selling the new book on Thursday, and now they are asking everyone to return the book, or else keep the book contents a secret!
If they return the book to the Canadian Superstore, J.K. Rowling promised to autograph the books.
I wonder who will step forward and return the book until they go on sale for real?

No the others were in the room with the brain. Only Harry and Neville saw Sirius die. Harry, Neville, & Luna could already see the Threastles.

Does someone care to refresh me (a lot! :b ) on what happened in book #4? I read it when it first came out about 5 years ago, and sorta lost interest. Now, think I'm going to buy books 5 & 6 together, but kinda forgot what 4 was about . . . . . .
Anybody? :\
Charmed One
July 12th, 2005, 09:00 PM
Book 4 starts out with the long standing rumor going around Little Hangleton that the gardener (Frank Bryce) who once worked for the prominent Riddle family had killed them. He kept insisting that before they were killed, a black-haired teenager (Voldemort) was seen hanging around the mansion prior to their murders. No such person was found and as there were no marks or injuries on the bodies, Frank was let go.
The story then kicks into gear where we see Voldemort and Wormtail sitting inside the Riddle mansion. Though the mansion has been deserted for many years, the gardener still takes care of the lawns.
One night, Frank see's a light inside the Riddle house and goes to investigate. He discovers Voldemort and Wormtail and their evil plan for Harry, but before Frank can go to the police, Voldemort kills him. At that same moment, Harry wakes up
in his room in Little Whinging, his scar hurting badly.
Skip forward past most of the Dursley's crappola... blah blah blah...and soon, Mr. Weasley, Ron, Fred & George come and get Harry. They take him to the Quidditch World Cup where he meets some other students from Hogwarts. The game ends when the famous Viktor Krum catches the snitch.
Skip forward some more, and now, Harry's back at Hogwarts.
There is a special competition coming up between Hogwarts, Beauxbatons, and Durmstang (the latter are two other European wizarding schools). Harry and most of the other students are too young to enter the Tri-Wizard Tournament (or TWT for simplicity). On Halloween, Harry's name mysteriously comes out of the Goblet of Fire (GoF), though nobody knows how he could have entered, being underage and all. The other Hogwart student picked was Cedric Diggory.
----
I'll finish this in a moment.... :)
----
The other students the GoF picked were Fleur Delacour (Beauxbatons), and Viktor Krum (Durmstrang).
The first task of the TWT is set and now it's up to them
to work through it.
Late one night, Hagrid takes Harry down through the Forbidden Forest and shows him what the first task is... dragons. There they meet Ron's older brother Charlie,
who is helping with this task.
One afternoon, Cedric talks to Harry and tells him he
too found out about the dragons (they were supposed to be
kept quite.) Harry then tells him that they are supposed to find a way past the dragon.
Quite confused by how to get by a dragon safely and retrieve the golden egg from it, Harry, Ron, and Hermione, (along with Sirius via the fireplace) try to work this out, but to no avail.
Then one day, the new DADA teacher, Mad-eye Moody, takes Harry aside one afternoon and gives him some "general help." He tells Harry to "play to his strenghts."
Finally, an idea pops into his head... he's good at flying.
He (along with Hermione) work on a conjuring spell so
he can call his broom to him (the Firebolt) before the first task.
The day of the first task comes and the names of those competing in the TWT are drawn. Harry goes last. When his
turn comes, he calls to his broom and is able to get by the dragon and grab the egg.
The scores are given out by Dumbledore, Mme. Maxine (headmistress of Beauxbatons), Barty Crouch Sr., and Karkaroff, (ex Death Eater and current head of Durmstrang).
Afterwards, the date is set for the second task. The golden egg reveals a clue to what the second task holds.
In between then, during one of Moody's classes, he shows the students the Unforgivable curses (which weren't to be shown until their 6th year). Moody demonstraits the Curses
on three spiders: the Imperius curse which can control a person completely, the Cruciatus curse which inflicts unimaginable pain, and the Avada Kedavra curse, the killing curse. He then demonstraits the Imperius curse on the students, Harry being the only one in class who can throw off the curse.
Christmas comes and as a special treat, Hogwarts holds the Yule Ball for the students 4th year and up. Totally inept on to how to ask a girl out, Harry and Ron luck out when at the last moment, two girls agree to go with them.
Neither Harry, Ron, or their dates have much fun. It was later when they finally separated they find out that Hagrid is half-giant. (Which is reported in the Daily Prophet by Rita Skeeter, who has been trashing Harry in almost every article up to that point.)
The second task comes closer and still, Harry hasn't worked out the egg clue (procrastinating, :lol ). Repaying Harry for his
help over the dragons, Cedric tells Harry to hear the message in the egg (which at first sounds like a banshee).
He told him to take a bath. Unfortunately, Harry blows off the advice over his dislike of Cedric.
Finally time is running out and Harry decides to take Cedric's advice. He gets into the Prefects bathroom and gets in the water while unbeknownst to him that Myrtle is somewhere watching. :o When Myrtle appears, she tells him that Cedric
listened to the egg underwater. Kind of upset that she's been watching both him and Cedric in the tub, he gets the egg and opens it underwater.
Once he figures out the clue is about the mermaids and the lake in front of the school, he leaves the bathroom under the invisability cloak. He almost gets caught on the way back to the Gryffindor tower by Snape and Moody. Snape is suspicious when he spots the egg lying on the floor Harry accidently dropped. It was during then that Harry realized that Moody can see through his invisability cloak with his magic eye.
The second task arrives and, unfortunately during that time, he hasn't figured out a way to breathe while under water. It was on the day of the TWT when Dobby saved the day by giving him some gillyweed. Harry races out to the lake and takes the gillyweed. He turns into a human-fish and has to rescue something that has been taken from him. He realizes that neither Ron or Hermione have been seen since the night before and sets off into the water.
He gets to the bottom where both his friends are, along with another girl (Fleur's little sister), and Cho. Viktor comes along and saves his "Her-mi-oh-ninny", and Cedric grabs Cho.
Harry grabs Ron and waits for someone to grab the little girl, but no one comes. Playing the hero, he takes both Ron and the girl back to the surface.
Fleur is almost beside herself and when she sees Harry with her sister, she thanks him profusely and starts warming up to him.
The scores are given by the same people, all except for Barty Crouch Sr. who hasn't been seen since prior to x-mas. (He was replaced by Percy Weasley as judge.)
A few months pass and the time has come for the third task.
A couple of days before hand, Viktor and Harry are talking outside by the Forbidden Forest when Barty Crouch Sr. comes stumbling out of the forest, completely out of his mind.
He bables about something and thinks the trees are his assistant Percy. Harry told Viktor to stay with him so he can grab Dumbledore, but by the time they get back, Viktor has been knocked unconcious and Crouch is nowhere to be seen.
The third task is taking place in the quidditch field, which a maze has been set up. Harry and Cedric go first as they have the most points. They work through the maze and get toward the end where the TWT trophy is. After arguing for a moment, they decide to grab it together. Little do they know it has been turned into a Portkey.
They soon find themselves inside a graveyard where a short figure (Wormtail) is carrying something small and wrapped up that looked as small as a baby. The "baby" (Voldemort) yells out to kill the spare, and Wormtail kills Cedric right there on the spot.
Harry is tied up to a large tombstone which reads "Tom Riddle Sr."
After some complicated magic which involved a bone from the grave of Voldemort's father, Wormtails severed hand, and
blood from Harry, Voldemort has come back to life.
After forcing a duel with Harry, Voldemort's and Harry's wands act up and Harry's wand begins making Voldemort's wand spit out all the spells he's done. Ghost forms of Cedric, Frank Bryce, and other people (including Harry's parents) appear.
The Ghosts hold off Voldemort (who looks deathly afraid of them) so Harry can get away. He grabs Cedric's body and the cup and is transported back to Hogwarts where pandamonium ensues. Come to find out Mad-eye Moody is really a Death Eater in disguise and the real Moody is locked in a trunk.
After explaining everything to Dumbledore, he gives Harry a special potion to drink to put him to sleep.
And basically that's all. Harry gives his TWT winnings to Fred and George so they can start their joke shop.
Sorry for the long post. :)
