View Full Version : Wisdom teeth being removed....

On April 14th I go in to have my
wisdom teeth extracted. Oh joy. :x
Luckily they haven't poked through yet,
so removing them should be a breeze.
The dentist said that it would only take
around 25-30 minutes for the procedure
(which I'm chosing to stay awake for).
For the first day or two I get to eat soft
foods like ice cream, soup and jello....Yum ! :lol
I'm not too nervous about it now,
but come April 14th it'll be a whole
different ball game. :lol

Oh good luck and I hope they don't hurt too much. I know for me I've only had two of them removed and that was cause they were bothering me, otherwise I still have to left. I love my dentist and when he extracted them..it didn't hurt. I hope the same for you. <img border=0 src="http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/smile.gif" />

When I had mine out I opted to be unconcious. I have a hard enough time dealing with a regular tooth cleaning much less surgery! Everything went ok and I didn't wake up until everything was all over :D I just needed to swish with salt water a few times per day. My gums healed up nice and quick so I could go back to real food faster than they said I would :) DO be careful with whatever pain medicine they prescribe for you. My dentist gave me codene and I had to half the dose because I was off in la la land 0]

I had mine removed in November. I wasn't knocked out cold, but I was given a gas that makes you relaxed and fell asleep anyways :lol

The first week may not be to pleasant, but the after effects of the surgery are good. I'm very glad I had mine taken out. They can cause a lot of problems; mine were giving me horrible headaches.

Getting them out early is much better than when they are already painful.

Lots and lots of ice cream :lol

Ew ew ew ew ew. Welcome to this rite of passage, nice angel:x If you're getting them all done at once, it shouldn't be too bad. My experience was horrible, but I know people who had hardly any trouble at all.

Just take it easy and enjoy all the ice cream! I swore by slushies myself...:D Just make sure you don't drink from a straw for a while after the surgery.

I've only had one out and that was this Christmas and I'm 35! Mine was fully in so I just had the novocaine in the area and it only took about a minute to pull it.

What drove me crazy was not eating on that side of my mouth while the gum healed. Very annoying. The avoiding straws thing is very important because sucking can remove the blood clot that forms while its healing the first few days. Avoid hot liquids for the first few days too.

I didn't take any pain meds but after I had a kidney stone and after I fractured several ribs, I also had to cut the pain meds in half because of how strong they were so I understand about that Shallah! I guess some people are just very sensitive?

On the plus side, I lost about 5 pounds. Good luck and enjoy the soft foods.

a wimp when it comes to pain. After taking the codene after surgery I found myself the next day lying in bed humming along to pretty music and then I realised I didn't have the radio on! That startled me so after I halved the dose and I was back on earth after that :D I was lucky and healed quickly. It might have helped that I took chewable vitamin C at the time and I could feel my gums tingle when I ate it. When I went in for my check up my gums were already healed shut :)

On the opposite end of the pain med. spectrum was my Dad who was no wimp when it came to pain but codene never did a thing for him. He once got an abcessed tooth and the dentist prescribed tylenol with codene to hold my Dad over the weekened until he could have it taken out on Monday. It didn't do a thing and the doctor had to prescribe something else, i can't remember what now.

I had mine out about Nine months ago. I had all Four and they were not inpacted. IT didn't hurt at all. In fact I had A turky sandwich Like 3 hours after I got Home. But it should be no problem. even people with pain feel better relitivly soon. Good Luck

I hope it goes well nice angel!! Can you really survive the pain of the procedure if you're awake during the time? I don't know I could stand it!! Luckily I have a while to go before I have to get them out!

I had my bottom two taken out about two years ago and it was really bad, for me at least... and my three-rooted wisdoms. They had to take each out in pieces. I was given Vicodin to help, and I think all I did was sleep for three days straight. I think I was back to my old self after a week and a half.

Now I have to go back and get my top two taken out cause they are pushing my top row out of alignment. I've been kind of holding off on that though =\ It may sound a little silly since I've experienced the extraction before, but I'm just as nervous and scared as ever.

I also have a hard time keeping up with the regular cleaning too! My dentist is always telling me I need to brush better.

I'm going to get all 4 wisdom teeth pulled out this summer. I'm hoping to get the pulled out before band camp but not to close to my senior photo session.

I'm also going to be put to sleep. I also have a cyst, so I'm kind of nervous about the process but my brother used the same oral surgeon and my mom thinks he's a really good one. He's very thorough and I think he also explained that they have defibrillators.

I really enjoyed reading other mkfers stories since I'm going to go through the process soon.

LOL M02O!!! I really doubt the defibrillator will be necessary!!! :lol I stayed awake when they took mine out, and it wasn't that big of deal!!! I ate a pizza a couple hours later!!! :p Good luck M02O, and nice angel!!!

I ate a pizza a couple hours later!!!
Are you serious? I was on an apple juice diet for several days before I could eat any solids. It was painful for me to open up my mouth. I had all four of mine taken out at once.

You got to eat pizza a few hours later ?!?!?!
*gives kwanstruck an evil glare* ;)
I was stuck on soft stuff for a few days afterwards.
Not that it was a bad thing, I guess. I like soup and
ice cream. :lol

Unfortunately because of insurance reasons, my wisdom
teeth didn't come out 'til September.

I had all four of mine taken out at once.

Me too ! They numbed me up so much, the dr. thought
that maybe I was put out. :lol
Also, I couldn't even feel my chin or half my cheeks
for a few hours afterwards. :x
But when it wore off, thank GOD for painpills. :lol
Man, did I look like a chipmunk for a few days
afterwards. :lol

Btw, I can't believe this thread is still here.
It's over a year old! :lol

A nurse gave me good advice after I had four of my wisdom teeth pulled out: have a slurpee!! (with a spoon though) I was lucky that I had no swelling and I actually ate shrimp fettucinni several hours after the surgery but it took about an hour to eat it, one noodle at a time!:eek But 2-3 days later, my mouth hurt sooo bad and my dentist told me to take Advil and Tylenol 3 (I think thats what it was) and it seemed like so many pills a day but I assumed the dentist knew what he was talking about, and luckily I finally felt better!
But now I have to have a gum graft and its a 1 hour and 30 minutes surgery and I have to be awake--I'm scared! it sounds yucky!:\

That's OK M02O!!! I had hoped they wern't telling you your heart might stop durring the procedure!!! :x I had mine pulled at 11:30, and went to work at 1:00!!! I had the choice of being put to sleep, or not, and I chose no!!! I had a super cute Japanese nurse, :eek so I thought I might as well look at her while they were pulling the teeth!!! :lol They gave me a prescription for pain killers, but I never bought them!!! I never even needed a to go to the medicine cabinet for a regular asperin, or whatever!!! The rest of your mouth will be OK, but a little tender around the edges where they actually pull the teeth!!! I say eat whatever you want, but remember not to use those areas where the teeth were pulled, and rinse with salt water to make sure the open wounds are clean!!! A couple days, and it will be history!!! You'll look cute as ever for your senior pic!!! :) :) :)

M020!!!
Wow!!!....It seems like your teeth HAVE been through a lot already!!! Don't worry too much about the surgery!!! It sounds a lot worse than it really is!!! A couple days of a little discomfort, and you will avoid the problems that most people have to deal with later on!!! Sounds like, so far, you are doing all the right things, so hang in there!!! Soon you will have the beautiful smile you deserve!!! :D :D :D

To me it all comes down to who's doing the pulling. I asked at least 20 family and friends who they recommended. And I got so lucky. All 4 were pulled out in one appointment and I had nothing more than a local shot of novicaine. I felt the tugs obviously, but it went so quickly. The doctor did such a phenomenal job, I never even needed to take any of the pain medication he prescribed (standard procedure I guess) once the novicane wore off several hours later. The swelling was almost non-existent. I couldn't believe it.

I guess people's experiences can wildly vary. I was anticipating the worst and walked away from it thinking, "That was it?".

get sick when I took my pain medication. I couldn't
eat anything solid for a few days.
