I shouldn't think this is all that political, but ya never know who might figure I'm green on the outside and red on the inside (as they said about the Fidelistas), so it's in the political forum:

One of the wonderful things about growing up in the South is the watermelon. We just ate some in the back yard, getting it all over us, making a mess ... what fun!

Then the yardman came, to mow that lawn.

"Red on the inside"....for some reason, that makes me laugh. The things people notice!

DMBChic: You put salt on watermelon? I've never heard of that...it actually tastes good?

Em2k, since Fidel and his guys wore green uniforms, and since commies are known as "reds" (after the Red Russians, who made their capital in Red Square, and were known throughout the world as "the Reds") people in Cuba likened the Fidelistas to watermelons, which are green on the outside and red on the inside. They called 'em los melones.

Aren't you glad I took Cuban History? Hee hee hee....

Salt is good on watermelon!
LOL, Jerry! Now I understand...you lost me there for a minute.

The Spanish word for watermelon is sandia, FYI. That was the name of my High School...does that make me a Commie? :b

Salt is a necessity on watermelon. It would be un-American to try to eat it otherwise.

Unless you cut a plug out of it and poured in a fifth of rum or vodka before cutting it open.

Let the "juice" soak in for a while before cutting it open.

Ahh-the good ol' days.

Thank God they're OVER!!! :lol

The Spanish word for watermelon is sandía? But the professor told us folks called the Fidelistas Melones, and said it meant watermelon, as I described above.

Alas, it doesn't. Melón means melon, and sandía means watermelon. I might consider writing to that professor about this.

As for salt, YEURRKKK!!! Watermelon is a Southern Food, and we do NOT adulterate it with salt!! I have never heard of such a foolish thing! Must be some yankee idea.

If salt on a watermelon isn't a yankee abomination, then it must be a commie plot!

Em2K said, Interesting coincidence: My Dad is half-Russian and has the letters KGB on his license plate.Fascinatin! Does he happen to have any buddies named Putin?

(And, in an aside ... Have y'all noticed the French transliteration of Putin's name? They call him Poutine!)

PPrincess said, Well, I'd be considered a yankee (and damn proud of it) and salt on a watermelon? THAT'S un-American! And totally sick sounding! Watermelon is the world's perfect food. Why tarnish it with salt? Y'all see? Even a confessed yankee like the PPrincess knows the truth about salt on watermelon!

So: it's not a yankee abomination. It's a commie plot. Hey Em2K, can your dad call his KGB buddies and verify this?

Nowadays,I'm more into Roma tomatoes & salad cukes. They go good together and you do get that refreshing organic boost like the good ole melons give.Chill them, slice em on up,add a little pepper and some Italian dressing..........yum-yum eat em up! :D .......................<!--EZCODE BR START--><!--EZCODE BR END-->"There's five more acres in the lower forty I've got to plow.......and Momma said it was a shame about Billie Joe anyhow........da da da dot dot dadda dadda da dot da........the day Billie Joe MacAllister jumped off the Talahatchee bridge."

As a child, I use to take my slice of watermelon-go down to the fattest part-and try to tunnel my way through from one side to the other using my spoon.
I would try to do this in as many places as possible-leaving the top edge along the slice intact.

My father always wondered "what the he** are you doing?"

Come to think of it-it was a bit on the "pyscho" side. :b

Watch that salt.I over-induldged as a kid and as a younger adult and wound up with a serious thyroid condition. The thyroid was cured and every since then,I've gone very easy on the salt.A thyroid gland attracts iodine and most people use iodized salt.Pepper is cool once you get used to it and how to use it.Jerry, when it hits a 100 and over here, mowing grass that grows like wildfire is the thing to do.I have some kin folks way over yonder in El Paso and am aware of what is known as Texas heat....... I think Jerry put this thread here so all us down home folks on both sides of the Polly-Tix fence would have a safe zone to chat about less serious issues, such as watermelons, turnip greens, salt & pepper.Any turnip fans in the house????:D woooooooooo and crabapples! I haven't had any good ole crabapples in years. My mum eats grits everyday and it could be the secret to her longevity.

JerryStopher

8A, I don't even remember starting this thread, much less with some benign intent! LOL!!

But seriously ... my mama doesn't eat grits every day, but she's 93 years old. I think it's got to do with her involvement in the only sport at which she ever really excelled, piano. She went to high school with the greatest athlete of all time, and to this day she says, "Babe Didriksen could jump over that horse, climb that rope, hit that ball, and shoot those baskets, but she had nothing on me: ol' Babe never could play piano!"

And then, there are Aunt Myrtle and Uncle Edgar. (Myrtle was my Granny's big sister.) They ate cereal with heavy cream, biscuits (used lard for all her baking, Myrtle did), fatty pork sausage (which was preserved with huge amounts of salt and lard), and eggs (fried in lard) every day for breakfast, together with lotsa coffee. Lived into their eighties.

Now what was our topic again?

Mr Pru asked the musical question, Weren't your Aunt and Uncle the couple that owned the motel on Petticoat Junction?? LOL, Pru!

But seriously ... I thought Uncle Edgar was just some ol' bumpkin who didn't know anything about anything but farming. Then one day, when I was sixteen, he sat me down and explained to me about the plan to put ICBMs in hardened silos in midamerican farmland.

He knew all the technical details, and all the political ramifications, and everything there was to know about foreign policy, too!

He also knew how to make a mighty good living outta that farm in Missouri, which, by the way, all my relatives there always pronounced "muh-ZOOR-uh."

And Sparks remarked, I love Petticoat Junction! I wonder if they ate salt on Watermelon? No, Sparks, the folks on P Junction were not communists.

Jerry,Betty Jo was a communist. The red hair was a dead giveaway! CBS and those subliminal messages! :lol :lol The woman who played as Kate was also Jethro's ma on The Beverly Hillbillys. My own Grandmomma Rosa was a Buddy Ebsen(Uncle Jed) fan.Good attitude is how she made it to 93. Gotta watch those corncobs! They can shorten your life and make everywhere you sit uncomfortable.:eek Jerry, tell me about Texas sandspurs. Not too many around in Montgomery anymore, but we used to have some level 3 and 4 sandspurs.

Betty Jo was a commie? Oh my goo'ness, I never knew! And I thought the onliest commies were on Green Acres! Well, and on the Bob Newhart Show, where Larry and his brother Daryl and his nother brother Daryl were obvious.

Texas Sandspur: What a cowboy wears when he's ridin his horse on the beach. Right now, he would need seaweedspurs.
