I was reading on this site about the stuff that is in milk. I didn't realize all that was in there. And there are all these adds constantly getting people to drink milk and eat dairy products. Milk is given to babies to help them grow quickly and transfer the antibodies from the mom to the kid. The cows milk is for her calf, not to be taken so people can drink it. Not only that, but milk contains pus. Which is really gross and I didn't know. There are several hundred million pus cells per glass of milk :x www.notmilk.com/ (http://www.notmilk.com/) check it out

For adults and anyone who is beyond the age of nursing, Silk soy milk is so much better than real milk. Anything using milk, you can use Silk instead. It's got all the same calcium without the fats, pus or what have you. It's got excellent anti-oxidants. I love eating cereals with Silk. If you are turned off by milk, I highly recommend you give Silk a try.

Yeah I have soy milk quite a bit. I had still been having the regular stuff too until I read all of that. Think Ill be switching permanently now though. My friends sister tried to tell me ages ago that regular milk wasn't good for me. But I didn't believe her at the time. I believe her now! Not to mention the way the cows are kept pregnant, get ulcers, have udders that get so big they drag on the ground, have their calves taken away from them shortly after birth. Not good. :|

I love Silk...

I wish that the would come up with a soy half and half though. I always try to look for it at Trader Joes or other wholefoods stores and no one has soy half and half.

LOL...

What's coming to this world when milk has become a political topic!

rotfl.

Well I put it here, just to be safe :b

Vegetarianism is controversial/political for some people. As its seen as a liberal subject most of the time.

I love milk. I really do. Drink about a gallon per week.

Soy milk makes me gag. Anyway, that website was kinda silly and really not all that credible.

Soy milk makes me gag.

It really depends on what kind. Most brands suck. But Silk is very good. In fact chocolate Silk tastes no different from chocolate milk. And if you get any coffee drinks at Starbucks, substitute soy milk (they only use Silk) with the real thing and you won't even really notice the difference, plus you cut down on a lot of unnecessary calories.

I only drink skim milk, so no worry about the calories.

I have heard that people of Asian/African desent can't digest cow's milk. I've also heard that the only people who really can are those with northern european ancestors.

Speaking of another substitute...

White rice has absolutely no nutritional value other than to fill up your tummy. You can substitute it with brown rice which is alright but some people think that brown rice just taste yucky. Or...

You can substitute with quinoa... quinoa which can be gotten at your local whole foods store or Trader Joes is an Incan grain. It is extremely yummy, more nutritious, and cheap too!

Here's how I cook it. Add it with diced onions, sliced green bell pepper, sliced tomatoes, a little bit of salt, lime, fresh black pepper, and margirine (sp?). Put them all in the rice cooker. Let it cook! Mix! Add fresh green chives!

Cook up some salmon (or tufo) and asparagus and viola! YUMMMMMMYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now if you want make it a little more eastern:

Nix the lime, substitute with light coconut milk and curry powder! Then serve it with firm tofu or chicken curry and veggies and double viola!

And no offense DMB, but most of those sites are hard core vegan, with PETA overtones. They are extremists and they will say anything, credible or not.

I'm with Lanternlight. Milk is my favorite beverage. I've loved milk all my life and was drinking it even before the days of homogenization. My mother always claimed it would be more cost effective if we kept a cow. :) I drank whole milk until I was in my thirties then switched off to 2%. Now that I'm retired I drink the 1%. Boy, it doesn't take long to put on the pounds when your activity level falls. :) Next thing you know, I'll have to switch to 0% fat. Yuck!

Both of my sons are vegetarians and one of my daughters-in-law is a vegan. She drinks the soy milk, preferring the Silk brand over the others.

Yeah I mean, to each their own. One side or the other could be lying. The USDA isn't fool proof either. After all, its linked to the gov't :P lol And they don't want the dairy industry to fail.

Being lactose intolerant I tried Silk. I was advised that chocolate Silk tastes "just like chocolate milk." Well, not to me it didn't!! That stuff came right back up and I poured the rest of the carton down the drain. Either 1% or skim Lactaid for me!

edited to add: Lewis Black said on his HBO special that there is no such thing as soy "milk" because there is no soy teat. He said it is bean juice!:lol

Yeah I definitely wouldn't say soy milk tastes the same as regular milk. Soy milk reminds me of the way icing or cake batter tastes, somewhat.

It took me a long time to figure out that I had a minour natural allergy to "whole milk"(straight on cow's milk). I agree that cow's milk is probably a near perfect formula for calves and that a human mum's milk is probably a near perfect formula for her babies. Since I don't drink milk or have the standard milk+box cereal breakfasts,I have to stay alert to a need to intake calcium from other sources.Good olde leafy green vegetables are a good natural source for calcium.<!--EZCODE BR START--><!--EZCODE BR END--><!--EZCODE BR START--><!--EZCODE BR END-->I'd love to see America begin to work towards a non dependency on our cattle and pork industries.Stop glamourizing the animal slaughter biz so much.I'm not impressed by the braggadosio 28 ounce Texas steak fests or the Coney Island annual hot dog eating orgies. If we could all agree to begin to work towards filling our needs with vegetable alternatives,it would eventually be better for us and for our environment.Huge vegetable kingdom farms can provide lots of good wholesome nutrition and help in the quest for cleaner air.Plants intake carbon dioxides and carbon monoxides and return clean oxygen. The huge-big ranches and dairy farms also produce lots of methane and carbon dioxide.Veggies are more logical.

ITA mike :) . Although I think people that eat veggies produce more methane too :lol *ahem*
