I understand you being upset at what happened and why you posted about the event.

However, IMO images of a public hanging and then comments at the end of the article from posters loaded with the "F" word is inappropriate for many on the forum especially the young kids.

i can really careless about what the people wrote about the content of the article. Its the government of the darn place that im "po" at. Its kinda out of the picture what people wrote at the bottom of the page. I was more upset at what they did to the two boys. Besides, those were people who were "po" too, and thats the only way to showed their anger, and I for one really don't care now if they used that tone of language!!!! I guess what i should have done was put "obsene language" in my subject....my bad!!!!

I realize that this topic is better suited under the Political section of the forum, so this is where I have moved.

I always believed that when you use your holy book as a LITERAL source (note the word LITERAL) for your modern day laws, it leads to barbarities like this:( >:

Iran is a perfect example. That is why in this country, as a Gay man I get nervous when we have large groups of Conservatives who rely on the bible as the source of their belief to make laws. There are a few fire-breathing passages in the Old Testament about what do with people like me:(

I wonder why those folks never go the whole route with those OT laws. I've never heard a conservative call for people who go to work on Sunday (or Saturday depending on your sect) be stoned to death. Or that women having their period who set foot in a church be put to death. Or that men who've slept with or touched a woman who has her period and then went into a church be stoned. There are quite a few punishments for these types of crimes written in the books of Law of the bible, but those never seem to make the light of day with conservatives. It is a case of 'the worst sin imaginable is the one that I don't commit'. Hypocrisy!

This story is a perfect illustration of exactly WHY it is religion and government do not and should not ever mix. If these to children can be hanged for this, and a young girl can be killed for "acts not conducive to chastity" how many others will be killed? What else will be declaired a crime against god/the state? And if conservatives get what they want and we become the United Christian States of America, how long before we see people being carted off in OUR name? Before any says "yeah but we're not barbarians we don't want to have the state kill anyone", I say but you want it to imprison them?? That is STILL unacceptable. How long would it be before they were after your son or daughter for "acts not conducive to chastity"?? Is that the country that ANYONE wants?

And no, you can't say that no one would ever actually arrest someone for breaking even the archaic laws still on the books (and still defended and kept on the books by conservatives) that declare "homosexual activity" illegal. I'm sure some will remember the case a few years back when in a bible belt state an old woman happened to be walking in a back alley somehow saw through a married couple's shaded bedroom window that they were engaged in a "prohibited" sexual activity and promptly called the police. They then arrested the wife (she actually committed the "crime") allowing her only to cover herself in a bathrobe, took her to the police station, finger printed her and took a mug shot. I believe that she actually still has a record! I don't know about you but that is both idiotic and terrifying. Imagine being in your own home with your SO and suddenly having the police cart you off to prison! Is that something out of 1984 or what?

What about the stoning of Women to death who allegedly committed adultery? Or Female genital mutilation? Or child slave labor?

This latest outrage, this hanging of homosexuals, repugnant as it is, is designed to distract us from the real cause....the protection of Women and Children.

The original poster was showing us some of what is going on in Iran. Asking for help in opposing such barbaric acts. Then the habitual "point all your fingers at those bible thumpin conservatives cause they are raping bambi and torturing mickey mouse" posts. A desire for a nicer more peaceful World doesn't come in shades, colours, religious affiliations or politcal party preferences.I've known marijuana addicts who always vote democrat because they believe the demos are softer on grass. Some of the same long haired rednecks loath gays, blacks and jews. They get high and get off on trashing those they hate. The real scums of the Earth have no religion,no political excuses for their behaviour and answer to only one god,da Devil. There will be a nice very hot place in hell for those who hung the two boys. It's in the same vicinity as the place for modern Kamikaze voluteers who thrill kill "for god/allah/etc." It's wrong! It's always been wrong and always will be.

Mike,

The one thing about the longhaired rednecks you spoke of is that they don't really hold any levels of power. They can spew hate and someone like me would be angry, but I'd eventually just laugh them off. The leaders of the Christian Right are politically astute and and they are shrewd. They know how to manipulate for power and they have tons of cash to peddle influence to our lawmakers. They have a nationwide agenda and I have no doubt it's to ensure that I'm a 2nd class citizen (Marriage Amendments, Recall efforts of Gay Right laws, etc.) >:

Olympic, ITA. The religious right has made no mystery of what they want of this administration. They want Roe-v-Wade overturned, they want more money for "faith based" programs and schools (as long as those the "faith" is judeo-christian, and so far they're pretty much getting their wish), and they want homosexuality driven from mainstream society, by whatever means is possible, including making it illegal (or in some instances keeping it) illegal. It's true that the thread is about atrocities in Iran. What, it seems to me, so frightened the original poster was not only this abominable act, but the fact that we here in the good ol' USA aren't so far away from marrying conservative christianity and government. Our president has made it quite clear that he's not going to shy away from expressing his christian ideals in governing the nation. Tell me, why on earth would she NOT be afraid for her brother?? I'm afraid for my gay friends.

The chopping down of cherry trees is much more productive than the hanging of homosexuals. Fanatics, religious or otherwise, seem to be good at the latter.

Olympic, were the young men in Iran persecuted by American religious right wingers? If you want to get a group of people "on your side",do you start by belittling them and callng them names? Christians have been persecuted from day one and it continues.Try living in a fundamendalist clergy dominated Moslem nation and openly practicing Christanity. It's against the law in certain nations and those nations deal with it with extreme prejudice.<!--EZCODE BR START--><!--EZCODE BR END--><!--EZCODE BR START--><!--EZCODE BR END-->Dope addicts pose no threat? Guess again. They threaten this nation just like termites and fleas threaten otherwise ordinary American households.Their #1 priority is "the fix". They will sell you out in heartbeat.<!--EZCODE BR START--><!--EZCODE BR END--><!--EZCODE BR START--><!--EZCODE BR END-->I am of the Christian faith and I have no desire to even punch a gay dude, much less hang one.So let's don't be so quick blame what happened in Iran on "the Christians".And don't expect me to deny my faith in order to "get along". I refuse to call the terrorists who are slaughtering people and destroying property by the wholesale Moslems, because I have respect for the Moslem religion. They are no better than that Klansman who tried to hide behind a silly mask and blamed it on God when he did his thrillkill thing. The Protestants vs Cathelics thing in Great Britain is insanity. That all of these things are still going on here in this so called age of information in a World that absolutely knows better is frustrating. By now,we should be way more interested in cool figure skating events than in hating each other over minor differences.

No, Mike, they weren't persecuted by American Religious Right-wingers in Iran. I was only trying to draw a parallel about religious zealotry among Christians, Muslims, Jews, etc. in any country including the USA.

I don't see where I belittled any group in this country. In fact, didn't you use the term "longhaired rednecks" in one of your earlier posts???

For the record: I never lived in a clergy dominated country (not technically :b ) but I've lived for years within a family unit of Fundamentalists Christians and their big church, and listened to my Father tell me how "Homosexuals were only good for doing jobs like digging ditches", where they wouldn't be able to have any contact with kids. >: Or AIDS is God's Wrath >: I'm not naive enough to believe these are isolated feelings inside that community. I've seen it too much for too long. That is why when they have influence within the WH, Congress, Courts, it concerns me:o

I think you missed my point about the "longhaired rednecks." Of course they may be a danger to society, but they don't organize and peddle influence in DC. Please reread that part of my post.

Incidentally, a friend of mine traveled to Iran in 1996 on a British Passport for 4 months. He was a Farsi major. There is an Armenian Christian Minority in Iran who are left alone by the authorities, provided they don't make waves. There is also a Jewish community in Iran that remain in peace as long as they don't show any Pro-Israeli leanings. For the record, I don't agree with the government's philosophy there. Just pointing out they aren't being exterminated
