Bush appoints Bolton to U.N. post (http://www.usatoday.com/news/washington/2005-08-01-bolton_x.htm)

{snip}
"President Bush bypassed balky Senate Democrats on Monday and used his constitutional powers to appoint John Bolton U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.

Bush said the diplomatic post was "too important to leave vacant any longer," a reference to the Senate's failure to act on Bolton since Bush nominated him nearly five months ago."

{snip}
"Bush praised Bolton, 56, for his "willingness to confront difficult problems head-on" and blamed "partisan delaying tactics" for the Senate's failure to confirm him. But GOP Sen. George Voinovich of Ohio argued strongly against him. Voinovich said Monday that he feared Bush's move would "add to John Bolton's baggage and his lack of credibility."

COMMENT: This morning when I saw the headline about this appointment, a vision flashed before my eyes. I saw Bush strolling up to the Senate front door, opening it and poking his head inside and asking the guard, "Is everybody gone?", then getting on his cell phone and calling the newspapers with the appointment announcement.
(Someday I'll tell you all what popped into my head when I heard a story about airborne germ invasion. I was driving on I35E during rush hour at the time.)

I thought it was interesting how Bush kept referring to this as a "permanent appointment," when in fact it is only in force for about 15 months & won't become "permanent" unless the Senate then renews the appointment through confirmation.

I guess if he just keeps repeating it, that will make it so ...

Do you remember the wailing and teeth-gnashing from the Senate Repubs in 1998 when Pres. Clinton wanted to appoint a Gay man as Ambassador to little, tiny Luxembourg, and he appointed him by bypassing the Senate? They threw everything but the kitchen sink at Clinton. Incidentally, Luxembourg did not have a problem with a Gay Ambassador; the claim made by dear Sen. Rick Santorum (I think) was that Luxembourg as a Catholic country would be insulted by this appt. Anyway, I digress. I was just trying to draw a parallel to then and now under two different presidents

BTW. IIRC, the appointment was good for one year.

You're right Motherlode: They should rename their Party the party of Double-Standards>: .

I also noticed the lie that this president again made when saying that due to "partisan" efforts he felt this appointment was necessary. Hmmmmmm so those republican sentaors who made statements concerning their grave concerns about Bolton were "partisan". Does he know the meaning of the word?:rolleyes

I caught a glimpse of Bolton meeting with our UN Secretary General this morning.Looks like a love-in. I think Bolton is going to surprise his haters and do a fine job.

I doubt that. After all he is there to work this administration's agenda and that is decidedly anti-UN. I can't imagine that Bush's idea of UN reform will jibe with the that of the rest of the UN. There's a love fest now, but its doubtful that it will last very long. It will be interesting to see the fall-out.

I have confidence in Mr. Bolton. His views on Taiwan independence may anger Beijiing but who really cares about China anyway (Well, wal-mart does I suppose) ? Or the United Nations for that matter?

We should all care about China!

1. American Business and Government leaders are falling over themselves to court Chinese investment. The question is once they've invested billions and billions, will they have a say in our policies, just like the Saudis do?

2. China is a nuclear nation of at least 1.2 billion that is now competing with the US for the World's Resources.

3. The US is having a harder time isolating and/or sanctioning nations like Sudan, Iran, Venezuela, etc. because China is purchasing their Oil. Sanctions won't work because these nations can turn to China for business and hard cash.

4. As China is rapidly industrializes along with India, all those noxious fumes are going to make our planet nice and warm.

Should I go on?? yet to listen to many, you'd think Gays wanting to get married is the bigger threat:rolleyes

I care a lot about China.I think China and Ukraine are potentially more logical as USA allies than Germany and France.

Let someone else have that big horse collar that goes with being #1. Maybe then we won't be so resented.
