Note the item below about Harris' claim that the reason she looked so overly made up during the 2000 Florida election mess was because: some (unnamed) newspapers doctored photos of her. Never mind that millions of people saw her looking overly made up ... on live TV :eek

Yes, advances in software have made it rather easy for photo editors to alter images (which is why most major newspapers have made it a fireable offense to do so). But it's also easy to catch people doing that. All Harris would have to do is produce copies of how a photo of her at the same event looked different in various papers. But until she does that (or at least names the papers), she is just making herself look more ridiculous than her makeup did in 2000. :rollin

TAMPA, FLORIDA -- U.S. Rep. Katherine Harris (R-Fla.), who is running for Senate next year, has again accused some papers of doctoring photos to distort her makeup as a way to poke fun at her.

In an interview on a conservative radio talk show this week, Harris said some papers--she didn't say which ones--altered photos during the 2000 presidential election recount when she was Florida secretary of state.

Democratic commentators and talk show hosts lampooned Harris for what they described as her liberal use of cosmetics during the recount.

Harris was asked by radio host Sean Hannity whether that bothered her.

"I'm actually very sensitive about those things, and it's personally painful," she said. "But they're outrageously false. . . . Whenever they made fun of my makeup, it was because the newspapers colorized my photograph."

BTW, I live in Miami. She is supposed to run against Bill Nelson for the Senate in 2006. Karl Rove and co. are trying to recruit another Repub because they are afraid she'll be too divisive.

Anyway. So typical. Instead of rethinking her Tammy Faye Bakker makeup tips, she blames the media. It really follows a trend.

anyone who's seen her on TV, knows that there's not much more a paper could do to make her makeup darker lol

I did see a recent photo in which she'd toned down the makeup quite a bit. The lipstick color was a soft pink instead of the garish blood red, and the eyelashes no longer had that fake spiky look. But perhaps this photo was how she actually looked in 2000. ;)

Poor ole Tammy Faye has the "big C"(cancer). I saw a few moments of her on Larry King recently.Jim Baker,Tammy,Jessica Hahn........only in America,eh? <!--EZCODE BR START--><!--EZCODE BR END--><!--EZCODE BR START--><!--EZCODE BR END-->The makeup was a thing I had to get used when I went to my first in person figure skating event.A bit campy.Like I'm standing there, nonchalantly chatting with a junior lady who happens to have on lots of war paint and a rather flashy costume.I can imagine a big political event having it's own campy side.

It's "only in America" that someone would have cancer? And don't you think it's a bit insensitive to call it the "big C." I sincerley you're not making fun of her having cancer. If you are, you've hit a new low.

I think the poster was using "only in America" to refer not to cancer but the parade of "personalities" & scandals on a show like Larry King ... but i'm guessing there's similar stuff on TV in other countries as well.

The term "the Big C" is a common reference to cancer; I for one didn't read it as being disrespectful. Just like people use the term "the big one" to refer to a major heart attack.

At any rate, I wish Tammy Faye well in her fight & pray that she recovers.

Thanks moxie. I personally think it is insensitive to use "the big C" and "the big one," but I guess not everyone feels the same. When I think of "the big one," I think of Redd Foxx and how he used to joke about "having the big one." However, I wouldn't think his family used that term when he actually had a heart attack, which was actually what caused his death. And I seriously doubt that Mike would use the term "the big C" if someone in his family had cancer. To me, it's just too casual a term for such a serious matter.

I thought this was a thread about Katherine Harris and about her run for public office.

A couple posts back, someone posted that they had heard the state R committee was shopping around for an alternate candidate. What is the latest on this issue?

Anyone have any further news of interest?

Actually, I have heard cancer victims themselves refer to having "the big C" (including my mother, who died of lung cancer 9 years ago).

But, yes, I agree that some people might find it too casual in direct conversation. (In my mother's case, it was her way of attempting to lighten a serious matter.) But Mike was posting informally about a public figure. And I, for one, did not find it disrespectful. You, of course, are free to respectfully disagree.

Here's the status of her Senate campaign, as of Tuesday:

SARASOTA, Fla. (Reuters) - Republican U.S. Rep. Katherine Harris, famed as Florida's top election official during the disputed 2000 presidential vote, opened her campaign for the U.S. Senate on Tuesday and promised to defeat Democratic incumbent Bill Nelson of Florida.

Most statewide opinion polls show Harris trailing Nelson, a former congressman and state insurance commissioner who was elected to the Senate in 2000.

"I want to say I'm trailing by an eyelash, but I know what you guys (the media) would do with that," Harris said.

--snip--

The White House and some Republican leaders have tried to recruit other party candidates to run against Harris this time, fearing her polarizing role in the 2000 election would alienate moderate voters. But no other Republican has entered the race.

Harris, 48, said she would run as a conservative but progressive candidate. After her announcement, she began a five-day campaign tour of 10 major Florida cities from Miami to Pensacola.

So that's it, for now.

4dogknight,

There's talk here in Florida that Joe Scarborough (a Republican and former Congressman from Pensacola) is being asked to run. He's got the show over on MSNBC. He's pretty conservative but he tends to be independent-minded on a few issues, i.e. not a Bush Administration Cyborg :b However he didn't sound too committal. Sorry, I don't have a link.
