Pure speculation on my part here and not that you *guys* don't already know this, but:

More and more frequently, it sounds like part of the motivation missing for Michelle is that she wants romance. Only natural :) ! I think that's why she's going to college. To meet other men, broaden her horizons, have experiences that make her feel more "normal". Not that she doesn't see a lot of guys, but it's usually in circumstances that don't promote a romance. And being famous, and in figure skating, really limits her choices. She has to be so careful. Some will want to use her. It's hard to trust someone in these circumstances. Can you imagine, with her artistry, the programs will could get with her in love and loved? WOW! That's where the non-motivation comes in partially. That and feeling like she's not improving, or only slightly. No wonder with all the critics out there. Us too. We don't help. I know it's mostly constructive from us, but geez, the pressure :( . She's constantly bombarded with "needs to up the ante, etc. Give the girl a break please!

You know what I love to do? I love to watch Cherie's "Best of Michelle Kwan" tape and see the improvements she's made every year. I see them. In fact, I prefer her newer programs over her older ones. They are more sophisticated and well done. I see her getting better, which is great, I hope she does too :) ! Just skate from your heart Michelle. Win or lose, your the best in a lot of peoples eyes :) !

not on ICQ though and will be sleeping in a few minutes. Just wanted to check out on how Michelle's practice went. I'm thankful about the pics. She looks beautiful and awesome. LOL, guess what, the "teal" didn't even hit me. I've not had my BFFF rose colored glasses in a while, thus my depressing thought about stopping stories. AND eilaram, I got that and alls I have to say is, "No soup for you!!!"

Sharon, I sincerely hope Michelle isn't just in College for the romance. I'm hoping Paul solved that problem for her waaaay before that. But for being a speed demon on the ice, he's sure a slow poke in the "Michelle is my soulmate" department.

Littlepebbles, CONGRATS on the excellent BFFF Info Page. I think it's just perfect and it was a lovely surprise indeed! Yingshan should pay you double. Okay, I should go and sleep so I can catch my train to work tomorrow.

Mk goes to college b/c she is a bright girl and wants to learn. She said in 10 years she wants to have a profession and start a family.

Constructive criticism: I think she hears that from Frank everyday. "It is the way of sports, if you do not improve/keep up you will be left in the dust" Frank Carroll.

MK on criticism ( constructive or otherwise) "I try listen and see if it makes sense, if it does I will try to change, if not.." She gestured in one ear out the other. I say she is a very level headed young lady.

I think hearing criticism constructive or otherwise would probably be just a fraction of the pressure of handling the death threats etc. Remember she was 15 when there was a serious death threat. She has been very quiet about this subject. OT and talk about Tiger. Tiger on hate mail, " I make it a priority to read hate mail, it is important for me to know that even though I have goals, there are people out there who do not want me to achieve those goals. " Tiger makes it a priority to read hate mail, but there is all the signs and indication that his happiness does not depend on the absence of hate mail, his happiness is not dependent on being liked or adored by everyone. I think MK also has learnt this lesson. :) BTW, so far I haven't seen her crumple under pressure, on the contrary she thrives in it.

I can't help but compare the 2, I think MK is still able to enjoy a bit more privacy than Tiger. Sure when Mk goes to a competition, or any skating events she is mobbed by fans. Probably locally in CA when she goes out, the same thing happens. I suspect if she is outside of CA or skating events, she may not be as recognizable as Tiger by the general public ( I could be wrong), so she still could have a bit more privacy. :)

I think she makes progress in her skating every year. Whether she will nail a new 3/3 does not define her as a champion at all.She has nothing to prove.

Hey mano, how is your tooth? I'm having a "crown prep" done on Thursday and I've been wondering if that's a pysedomym (eek spelling!) for a ROOT CANAL! I've had two and both of them killed me for DAYS! The last one got infected 3 times!!!! I final had him just pull the darn thing and let my wisdom tooth come in. Fortunately, this one is on the top, so I hope it works out better.

The Ducks are home next week? I drove by the pond on Friday, but it was on the Angels board lol! Anyway, maybe #9 and 6.0 can have some quality time now :) !

and concludes that MK has a true lutz that should not receive
deductions in a sp. Very nice reading. YOu may have to swim through

Hi Sharon,

I'm glad your dental appointment went well.
Root Canals:
As you may know after talking with your
dentist, a root canal is often indicated for a tooth when there
has been extensive caries (cavity) that reach the pulp (the soft
"core" of the tooth) where the blood vessels, nerves,
etc. supply the nutrients and sensation. Other possible reasons
for a root canal may include trauma to the tooth where damage
affecting the pulp is sustained and surgical intervention is
needed to "save" it. Treatment may include removing
damaged or infected tissue at or surrounding the apices (tips)
of the roots, or removal of the damaged pulp tissue and surrounding
tissues. Recurrent infections may occur if not all of the infected
tissue is removed, or if the treated area is not completely sealed
to prevent reinfection from bacteria in the saliva. (The root
canals are often very thin in some areas, and if they are bent
at odd angles, make removal of pulp tissue very difficult and
easy to overlook). It is not uncommon for facial swelling to
occur following even successful treatments as the body heals.

Crown preps:
If the cavities do not reach the pulp,
a root canal may not be necessary. Crown preps are often done
if the caries are widespread enough to cause significant weakening
of tooth structure that cannot be "fixed" as successfully
by an amalgum or composite filling. That is to say, if a filling
were performed, the tooth would still be significantly weak so
as to increase the risk of fracture. Crown preps strengthen
the tooth by providing a metal (gold) or ceramic&metal (porcelain
layered on gold) exterior that replaces the damaged tissue (removed
with "the drill"), surrounds the tooth and "holds&
quot; the tooth together. Because the hard enamel exterior (
of the crown/cap) has been removed, the softer dentin layer is
the only layer left between the crown and the pulp of the tooth.
Dentin is a much more porous layer, and is therefore more sensitive
to heat, cold, pressure, etc. The temporary "soreness"
that you feel after your crown prep may be expected.

You may still have a
crown prep done after a root canal is performed. If enough tooth
structure was removed in order to access the root canal(s) from
the crown, the dentist may elect to prep the rest of the tooth
for a crown for added strength.

Sharon, my root canal went well, my dentist found 4 canals to mess around with 3 dead and one still alive, thus the pain. I was sore last week after the Novocaine wore off. BTW, I'd rather get injected 13 times than be put to sleep. I like to know what's going on. Oh and no I didn't get 13 injections, just one last week to kill the pain. I did go through 13 when they did surgery one time, long story. You know with all the stuff they've done to my teeth that I could be a dentist. My dentist didn't opt for a crown though, nor silver amalgam. He gave me a tooth colored amalgam so it looks natural. He said that if the tooth does crack, he'll then put a crown. The dentist is the only place I get treated like royalty. Hope yours went without a hitch.

Klier99 - thanks for the info. It's not sore anymore and my dentist did say that it was kind of close to the pulp, but not so much that I needed a root canal, thank God! I'm getting a gold crown since it's the last molar on the upper left side. He said it would last longer than porcelain.

You know BFFF is in big trouble when the main discussion happens to be about dental procedures. To make it somewhat BFFF related, did you know that Paul Kariya had 4 teeth knocked out in one game? He wanted to finish the game though so he told 'em to shoot him up with some painkillers and went back and carried his team to a win. That was years ago, so I have no clue what game it was and my details are iffy. I just know he lost teeth and won the game.

You know, I think I'm becoming indifferent to a lot of things lately and that's not a good sign. Thanks for keeping this place alive skatingfan and Chemy.

To be honest, I believe that the people that have a problem with that statement are upset because they expected or hoped that Michelle wouldn't still be loved...not limited to family, either. Instead, she was still loved and loved even more...maybe even bypassing someone else, and that really got their goat. Why do you think certain people are still on her case for anything and everything 3 years later?

Believe it or not, I'm actually taking this very well. It's a freedom of sorts 'cause now I don't have to think up crazy stuff about them anymore. It really makes one go mental. It has been the most fun year and a 1/2 making up fictional stories about them, but all good things must come to an end. I feel so relieved, it's weird.

Whoever either Michelle or Paul ends up with, I wish them well. They deserve all the happiness in the world. It's a good thing too because I really don't have time anymore. I thought I would once I moved, but I've gotten busier instead. To everybody who's made this place one great escape, I thank you sincerely from the bottomless pit of my heart.

Right now I am working on one final story for BFFF before we drive the final nail into the coffin, throw the last lily into the 6 foot hole in the ground, put the last pile of dirt on the grave. I should be posting it within the next 2 days. Fair warning that if you are extra sensitive or emotional about BFFF ending I suggest you not read it because this split is not amicable, and the truth is neither of them come off looking too great. This story will be as fictional as the very first story ever written was and both our stars will be out of character. They probably have not even thought about each other since that day at the Fan Fair so nobody take this personal.

Hey, you guys and gals. Long time no hear. I've been so busy that I didn't even watch any skatings lately. I just had an endodontic surgery yesterday and now is nuturing at home. And you're whining about root canal?! Root canal is a walk in the park comparing with what I've been through. So how is everyone? Or should I ask where is everyone? Is Mano behaving?

Yeah, I read the BBT story about Paul. That guy is blind. I tell ya! No worry. We'll find someone else for Michelle. GP is still available. :)

Oh, I've been in a spell of Ang Lee's movie "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" since last weekend when it opened in So. Cal. It's such a gorgeous and moving film! The score is hauntingly beautiful, especially the cello solo by Yo Yo Ma, which is the main romantic theme between characters Jen and Lo (the hidden dragon and the crouching tiger in the title). It makes me want to weep everytime I hear it, which is often since I bought the soundtrack. It also has an exhilirating percussion piece during a fight scene that just calls out for footwork. Hey, if Condolero can do an imaginative swordfight and Yagudin can flash daggers, surely Michelle can do a swordfight as well. Maybe we should send a soundtrack to Lorrie Nicol. Hmm... The movie is excellent, mixing epic romances with martial arts. Check it out if you haven't. Time magazine, the LA Film Critics Assoc. and quite a few other critics name it the best picture of the year. It's remarkable since it's in Madarin with English subtitles.

By the way, the young Taiwanese actor Chen Chang who played Lo is a hottie. Maybe he can come to Hollywood and meet Michelle. ;)

Addendum, talking about the Tiger, he is one cool cat. SI sportsman of the year. When they televized that last week, Cosby who gave the award to Tiger said, "He is the essence of sportsmanship."

Tiger made People's mag year end 25 most list. I thought it is so cute, when he was congratulated about a fabulous year he said. My best year was when I was 11. I had straight As, a cute gf, 2 recesses per day at school, and won 32 tourneys, my life was downhill since.

Yeah, I saw that Tiger's quote and thought it's hilarious. I'm still trying to check out the SI this weekend. I read a little bit in my endodontist's office. It's such a cute picture of Tiger on the cover. By the way, Time magazine's review of "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" was titled "Year of the Tiger". I thought that's fitting. Newsweek titled its review with "The Year of the Dragon". Newsweek actually is correct. This IS the year of the dragon. But who can say this is not a year of the tiger with the way Tiger has performed? :)

GP's stock has probably gone up a notch since his uncle is the president-elect now. :)

BTW, the young actor Chen Chang (Chang is his surname) is great to look at, but his acting needs some work. Zhang Zi Yi who played opposite him beat him by quite a few miles. Zhang stole the whole show. It's amazing that a 19-year-old actress in her second feature film can steal a film from Chow Yun Fat and Michelle Yeoh. The veterans were both excellent in the film, but the story centered on Zhang and she delivered the goods big time.

I'm resting nicely. Thanks for asking. My face isn't as swollen as before. I probably will venture out tomorrow.

I found a picture of the gf. I guess it's from Dux in Tux. Somebody in the Yahoo club posted it in the photo section, which is members only. I joined the club under an assumed name a while back so I looked at the picture. I guess I'm biased but I think Michelle is prettier. She's more buff anyway. I heard this girl is a wannabe Victoria's Secret model. She doesn't look like she eats too much so she just might nake it. BTW, the owner of the pic says the girl's name is Valerie.

She has brown hair. Someone said she looks like the girl that Ursula the sea witch turns into so she can steal the prince from Ariel in "The Little Mermaid". Someone else says she looks like Mr. Big's(?) wife from one of those HBO TV shows, The Sopranos or Sex and the city. If that can help you figure out what she looks like. She's tall, she looks taller than PK. I don't know anything about her other than that picture and her name is Valerie. Some PWWs said she looked "vacant" or looked like she wasn't very smart but I'm not sure how accurate that is.

I saw that too skatingfan. He's not local, as in So. Cal., and not a skater. That leaves TG out, as well as everyone at UCLA, but still leaves GP an outside shot. I'm with you though lp - no GP for me! By not a skater, does that only mean not a figure skater? That still leaves all the unmarried hockey players in contention. Well, at least the cute, nice ones :lol ! I wonder if he's someone famous? Maybe not. I don't think she'd care anyway, as long as he's the one. What about someone Karen knew from school? You know I've not been visiting this thread in a while. Thanks LP, didn't even know you posted a greeting, I thought it was going to be your break-up story. Yeah, happy 2nd Anniversary to that meeting between a Duck and a Swan at the Pond. Sigh, those were the days.

Just cute that Michelle really likes Hockey though. She mentioned it in her special and I never posted this but at the live chat she had last month, she was asked by a poster what other sports she watches. She said that she watches a lot of sports, then she listed them starting with Hockey (only one with Capital letter) then gymnastics, tennis, basketball and baseball. I was like, "AAAAAHHHH!!!!" I was just so speechless (and brainless) during that time though that it never occurred to me to ask her a question. Now I have tons of questions to ask her but too late.

Again, it's nice that she mentioned Hockey, is all.

I noticed that and gee whiz I thought I put that in my post. Like duh, how can I forget to write that the poster who asked that question had a name of "SirPaul"(or something like that). I mean how obvious can you be and that's why I was totally floored that Michelle would type "Hockey" first. What a trip. I was in BFFF Heaven for a while. It felt good being high again, albeit temporarily. I miss the good ol' days when these guys were unattached and anything goes in our stories.

Anybody want to make a bet on whether PK will be hitched to his girlfriend (she does really look like the human form of Ursula in Disney's Little Mermaid) by summer? LOL, somebody check if she's got a shell necklace around her neck. She may have stolen MK's lovely singing voice. ;) ;) ;)

Join Mighty Ducks stars Paul Kariya & Teemu Selanne at ESPN Zone-Anaheim for a
live taping of "Up Close with Gary Miller" Tuesday, February 6th at 1pm.

If you are unable to be there the interview will be shown on ESPN Wednesday,
February 7th at 1430 PM PST and again at 1130pm PST.

OK here's the deal at the ESPN Zone. It's first come first serve and to sit in the
taping area it costs $10 and you also have an additional 10$ food or drink minm.
The person on the phone said if you're sitting in the back of the room they may not
charge you the 10$ but I would be prepared to pay at least $20 bucks if you go.
They open at 11am and it's first come 1st serve, he said it's not usually crowded
but since the Ducks Emailed this notice to everyone on their mail list it may ended
having more people than normal.

Now the important question: Is there anybody who might want to go? I wouldn't
mind meeting someone there. I plan to bribe my kid to go with me (he doesn't like
sports but will do anything to stay home from school) and if he won't go with me I
don't know if I want to go alone. I figured I'd get there at 11 and check it out.
Maybe get a hot tea and a paper and just kick back until they seat people then
stay for lunch. I wouldn't mind meeting someone there who might want to share a
table. Let me know ASAP as this is for tomorrow.

Well, I was curious about this boyfriend, so I did a little research.

This Brad Ference plays for the AHL Louisville Panthers, they play at Freedom Hall in Louisville, Kentucky. I saw him on the Florida Panthers site also, he must go back and forth between Louisville and FL like those Ducks players that go between Anaheim and Cincinnati. According to the <a href=http://www.floridapanthers.com>FL Panthers site</a>, he has played 9 games with them. I don't know whether that is this season or overall. This poster posted yesterday (2/21) saying that MK had been at a Panthers game the night before, which would be 2/20. I looked at the AHL and NHL schedules and neither of them played on 2/20. In fact, the last game the AHL Panthers had played before last night was on 2/17 and it was an away game. (<a href=http://www.loupanthers.com/cgi-bin/schedule>Schedule</a>) So either this poster who nobody knows either got his dates and/or teams or it's a joke.

I also wonder why Michelle would go to Kentucky to watch a hockey game since she has school and practice, and why would she be flying back and forth across the country with her back and with Worlds in a month? It seems unlike her. Of course, lots of people do crazy things for the opposite sex.

Well, I was just interested and wanted to figure out who this guy is. He ain't PK but I hope he's a nice guy, at least. I too did some research after seeing that Brad boyfriend post. Just to play devil's advocate: The Louisville Panthers did have a game on 2/21 and Brad played in it (he was listed in a game summary for getting a penalty). The post was 2/21 at 8:11 pm. If that's 8:11 PST, it would be 11:11 EST. The poster could have posted after coming home from the game after seing Michelle. It just seems odd that somebody would make up a rumor about such an obscure person was Brad Ference.

It's too much of a coincidence that this guy has played on the same teams as Bret Hedican, Kristi Y's husband. Two thoughts occur to me:

1) Someone who knows him is playing a joke at his expense. ("Hey, let's start a rumor that his girlfriend is a figure skater, like Hedican's wife is.")

Or-
2) It's true, and perhaps Kristi & her husband had something to do with their meeting.

If she was going to date a hockey player, why couldn't it have been someone who's based in my hometown? Then maybe she'd practice at my local rinks once in awhile. :D

I mean, we really got some interesting lurkers here. Anywho, I was looking around for other pics on this Brad guy, the mug shots we've seen so far have not been that flattering to him. He could conceivably be real gorgeous in real life. I know, I know, never judge a book by its cover...but if you're planning to spend the rest of your life waking up next to that book...I'm going to get killed aren't I?

Sigh, I miss the good old days when BBT was non-existent and stories would just be filling my head. You know, it's like I flushed part of my brain down the toilet when the double BBT's struck. ;)
