Prologue: IAM rolled His eyes and said, “the dream weavers are up to no good again.” A long time ago in an alternate reality far, far away… A lone man stood on a balcony of his Keep and surveyed the darkness around him. The wind was blowing fast and furious, whipping his cape about and disturbing his normally immaculate spiked hair. He didn't mind. It was just a reflection of what he felt inside. He was in turmoil. He didn't want to leave yet. A black Hawk approaches and hovers next to him. Then it slowly transforms into a figure of a man dressed in black. The man bows briefly and says, "My Lord Tetsuhiko, we are ready." Paul looked at his trusted man at arms, and nods. Satisfied with the answer, the man transforms himself back into a hawk and disappears into the night. Paul spun around quickly and went into the room that was lit only by a single candle by his bed or rather "their" bed. He smiled realizing how much change she has brought into his life. Welcome changes long overdue, his mother had once said. He looked down on the sleeping figure of his wife and smiled. He sat down at the edge of their bed and gently caressed the long silky black hair. It's grown so long since that day he first met her...or rather the day he became re-acquainted with her again. It all started with a betrothal made on ice...

“Otousan, Otousan…” A child was heard saying. “Otousan,” the child sighed and finally shouted, “Father!!!” The Samurai warrior turned around and looked at his son, “what is it?” The little boy stared up at the serious visage of his father then looked passed him at the other stranger on the frozen lake. “Who are you speaking with father, and what does it mean by troth and why did you mention my name and who’s Wing?” Lord Tetsuko, 8th Shogun of the Kariya Shogunate smiled at his son and said, “Too many questions from one so young. You will learn in time what these mean.” He pats his son’s head and turns to face the stranger again. “This contract is binding, will you agree to the terms.” Tetsuko said Master Daniel Kwan, a wise man from the East, revered for his wisdom, turned away from the Shogun and thought for a moment. He wanted to raise his daughter to have her own mind, follow her own dreams and not be subject to a man’s whims and fancies. The betrothal will surely limit her freedom as well as put their two families in danger. He then thought of his wife and her words before he left to meet the Shogun, “whatever he offers, take it. The future depends upon it.” He closed his eyes and thought, “but Estella, he means to take our daughter.” A soft voice answers in his head, “husband, we gain a son. I had a dream about him, nay, them. It will be alright.” Danny opens his eyes, turns and stares at the Tetsuko’s heir. The little boy was about 6 or 7 and very curious. He was a handsome little fellow with an easy smile that will probably break many hearts in the future. He is a mixture of two proud races, Niponese from his father and Scotian, his mother and it showed in his exotic features. But it is his eyes that caught his attention. Windows to the soul they were. His eyes have an inner light that spoke of wisdom, strength, honor, humility, loyalty and love for his family and people. Traits that he has found aplenty in both his parents in the short time that he’s known them. The boy, aware that he was being observed, puffed up his chest, crossed his arms, and put on a serious face just like his father. Master Dan laughed. He ruffled the young boy’s hair and said, “you will do, my child, you will do.” “So you will accept?” Lord Tetsuko said. “Yes, IAM help me, I will.” *** “NO!!!” A growl was heard from the depths of a cavern deep under a chain of Volcanoes, three eyes open suddenly, eyes that were red and seething with hate and jealousy. It’s mouth filled with fangs curled in disgust. “How dare they disturb the sleep of the Daemon.”

I like it. It's a nice variation from the regular fan ficition(which is always amusing). P.S. I've stopped posting under the name IAD. If you're a fan of Japanese Anime like me, you'll know where I got the name from. Strangely enough I have a lot in common with him- even stranger I chose the American name.

In another land in the continent of Europa, a young man was speeding through the frozen river concentrating on the task ahead of him. He was conditioning himself for the Quadriad, an event that comes along once every four years, when the four moons of Tierra align. To be the best among his competitors was his ultimate goal. He had failed before. He shall not do so again. “Is this the Tierrian you were speaking off.” The Daemon asked as he peered closely at the image projected before him. The young man was ordinary, unassuming, a mere peon. “Yes, sire. He is but a poor peasant. No titles to speak of. He means to overcome his station of life through his athletic prowess. He covets the Gold Medallion of the Quadriad. He can be easily persuaded to serve our purpose by offering him this prized possession.” The shadow creature, Oni, responded. His black wings fluttering to and fro as he waited eagerly for his master’s response. “No, giving him the Gold Medallion is too easy. He may just take it and run or betray our cause altogether. What use is he then.” A cackling voice spoke from beyond the Cavern entrance. The shadow creature stared with annoyance at the new arrival. An old woman covered in a mixture of black rags and furs slowly approached the Daemon. What his master sees in the witch he can never fathom. “You were not summoned here witch, state your business,” Oni asked as he flew before her, trying to prevent her from approaching the throne. “Serving the Daemon is my business.” The old woman replied. She gave the creature a look of disgust and with one wave of her hand the shadow creature was made inanimate, unable to neither move nor speak. As she turned to face the Daemon her appearance changed from that of an old hag to a beautiful young woman with hair the color of the moons and eyes blue as the ocean. The Daemon looked upon the lady with pleasure. “Una, my sweet, You object to the man in question?” “Yes, he cannot be trusted. What use do you have of a peon when you can find someone with more power and fortune.” Una replied. The Daemon laughed and said, “what need have I of power and fortune when I possess them already. What I don’t have, he has.” “And that is?” “His soul. I mean to live among the Tierrans for it is the only way to destroy the chosen ones of the Antarctic Prophecy. A betrothal contract on the ice has already been established just as it was foretold. It must be undone.” As he spoke the image on the hologram changed to that of two men on a frozen lake. A little boy was with them. Una stared at the little boy and laughed, “he is the chosen one.” Then suddenly she was struck with a vision and saw the boy as a virile man in black armor. A purple and teal flag was waving behind him. One thing became clear in her mind. She had to have him. The Daemon knew that Una would desire him, just as he planned. It was integral that the boy never fulfills his destiny to bond with his mate or else all was lost. Una can lure him away from the girl. But that is just one part of his plan. He still has to take on Tierran form if he means to control the girl in the future. He needs a host body. “You will have him the moment he comes of age, now release my servant for I have use of him.” The Daemon commanded. Una pouted a little before doing as she was told. The shadow creature fell hard on the cold floor as he was released from her spell. He was about to pounce upon the hated witch when a strong voice stopped him, “Oni! Save your energy for your mission. Does the miscreant have a name.” The Daemon pointed again at the hologram. The image changed back to that of the young man racing across the frozen river. “Yes, sire, Tavio Cinque.” Oni answered. “Excellent. Bring him to me.”

“And one more thing…send my minions out. I wish to go Duck hunting.” The Shadow stopped mid-flight and turned back to face his master. “But sire, it is the middle of winter, the ponds are all frozen, surely you can…” The Daemon lost patience with his servant and grabbed his scrawny neck. “I keep you alive only to obey me. Shall I renege on our contract.” “No sire…” Oni answered, struggling to breathe.” “Then do as I say!!!” The Daemon growled. “Yes, sire!” The shadow creature quickly flew out the cavern to gather the Daemon’s minions. Two legions will be sent out, one to seize the host in Europa, the other to rendezvous with a small betrothal party. It seems his master wants to size up the enemy, Oni thought. Why is he so afraid of this small boy? The prophecy didn’t mention any boy or a baby girl for that matter. It wasn’t even about Tierrans. However, in order to preserve his life, he has to serve the Daemon. “You will not hurt him will you?” A soft, seductive voice asked. “Why Una, didn’t know you cared for Oni at all.” The Daemon teased. “Not that little cretin, I’d rather you do away with him, but he has his uses. I mean for the boy.” Una said. “My dear, have you lost your loyalty to me? Don’t pout. I promised you earlier, he is to be yours. I just want to have a little fun. I have been asleep for a thousand years, confident that my most hated enemies will never disturb my rest again. The abolishment of betrothals at birth by ruling families assured that the prophecy would never come to pass. Now I want to see with my own eyes who dared go against my arcane laws.” The Daemon explained. “Your arcane laws have been forgotten it seems.” Una said. “Then I shall make sure they will never forget it again.” Came the ominous reply as the Daemon disappeared in a cover of dark sulfurous smoke. ***

“Now Master Dan, we need to call upon a Witness to seal the betrothal,” Lord Tetsuko said. He was feeling a little unease, as if they were being watched, although he made sure no one was aware of his location, not even his men at arms. Only his wife, the lady Sharon, knew where he and their oldest son were. It has been a while since he had gone on a mission on his own. His armies or his elite guards usually accompanied him wherever he goes, but this was of utmost importance and he knew that a few promises of riches could sway even his most loyal warrior to betray him. “As you wish.” The wise man uttered a few words from the ancient texts and immediately a figure shimmered beside the two men. “You summoned me.” The Witness, clothe in gray, a hood covering most of his head, was an observer of Tierran lore and keepers of any contracts made or broken on the soil of Tierra. They bear no fealty to any Tierra ruler, but serve only the IAM. The Witness looked upon the two men with impatience. “I have not all day. What is it you wish to bind.” “We wish to bind my son and his daughter together,” The Shogun said. “A betrothal? I have not performed that contract in a long while, almost a thousand years. It is an archaic contract, why do you risk your lives for this? These days, the man takes a wife of his choosing without having to deal with familial obligations their fathers made,” the Witness questioned. “Please, we have to do this. We can’t explain it, for we have no time for I fear that danger is slowly approaching us,” Master Dan pleaded. “Very well. Let me see the children,” the Witness said before he felt a tug at his robes and looked down. “Excuse me sir, I’m the only child here, but in a few years I will be a man like my father,” the little boy, Tetsuhiko, said proudly. The Witness suddenly looked intensely at the boy. Can it be, he thought. A thousand years, a betrothal on ice, the Daemon awakened. He looked down at the boy, spun him around, lowered the child’s cloak and checked the area below the boy’s neck, between his shoulder blades. “What are you doing to him, you’re choking him.” Lord Tetsuko was about to pull his son away from the Witness when Master Dan stopped him. “Save your aggression for later, I feel evil approaching, we must let the Witness finish his task.” The Shogun stared at the Wise man and said, “you felt it too?” Then to the Witness, he said “Hurry, we need the contract now!” The Witness was satisfied. The prophecy is coming to pass. “Where did you want me to engrave the contract.” Lord Tetsuko placed two swords onto the ice. One was a long sword, forged from black steel, a katana for his son Tetsuhiko. The other, forged from the same black steel, was a shorter sword, a wakizashi for Master Dan’s daughter, Wing. “Will these do?” The Witness stared at the blades, smiled to himself and said simply, “perfect.” He raised his right hand and hummed a few phrases in archaic. The blades hummed in tune, glowed, then suddenly a bolt of lightning struck the swords. The force threw Tetsuhiko back on the ice. He was shocked to see the lightning only touch the swords. When he looked up, the Witness said, “It is completed, the contract is etched on the blades. Now it is up to Tetsuhiko and Wing to form the bond that cannot be broken. Now I suggest you leave now before we get a visit from the Daemon and his minions.” “The Daemon?” Lord Tetsuko stared at the horizon and said, “Then the hunt has begun. Master Dan, take the sword and train your daughter in the ways of the ancient, for her protection. When you decide to tell her of this is up to your discretion. Our children will meet at the appointed time stated on the contract.” With those words he gathered his son’s sword, sheathes it, and got on his destrier. He then helped his son up behind him. Master Dan did as he was told and then stopped and said to his friend, “you will not be able to get far in that, if the minions’ speed are to be believed.” Lord Tetsuko said gravely, “Then I will fight to the death, if need be, to stall them until Tetsuhiko can get away.” “Otousan, NO!!! I will fight too!” The little boy said in a worried voice. The Shogun was about to assure his son when the Witness spoke up again. “There will be no blood shed on this day, IAM told. Both of you shall go back from whence you came from. I shall distract the Daemon.” Master Dan looked surprised at the Witness and asked, “since when do Witnesses help Tierrans.” The Witness answered, “I was instructed, that’s all you need to know, now go, quickly.” Without further ado, the Shogun took off with his son toward the North. Master Dan transformed into a large owl. His claws clasped his daughter’s sword and flew off to the East. The Witness then caused a mist to come upon the frozen pond. He heard the approach of the Daemon and his minions. He smiled again to himself and faded into the mist. The Daemon stopped his black steed and looked around the mist-covered pond. “What sorcery is this? Search the area, find the boy.” The minions dispersed and the Daemon roared knowing that someone had interfered with his plans. “Someday, I will find you, young lord, and your bride. I will break your spirits, I still have many more opportunities to do so.” With an evil laugh he called his minions to him again and descended back into the abyss. *** The little boy stared at the sword displayed before him. He unsheathes it and stared at the black shiny blade. He ran his fingers across the writing on the blade. His father says that one of these days he will know what it means. He just has to be patient. *** “So that was 17 years ago?” Lord Selanne asked, staring at the blade his friend was holding. “Yes,” Tetsuhiko responded. “So what does the blade say?” “It says it’s time for me to meet my bride.”

The trees, bare of their leaves, were covered in snow. Crystalline icicles hanging down from its branches made the forest appear almost mystical to the man making his way towards the frozen Lake nearby. It was moments like these that he looked forward to, peaceful, tranquil. For he knows that they will become few and far between in the future. Suddenly, the silence was broken by something he cherished even more, his children’s laughter. He turned around to see his two daughters dart through the bushes, disturbing the snow that settled on it. “Ji! Ji! Sister, wait for me.” Wing, his youngest daughter shouted almost tripping over the hem of her dress. “Hurry up, you are already five, you can run faster.” His daughter, Karen, said as she stopped and waited patiently for her little sister to catch up. Then they both ran up to him, smiles wreathing their faces. Their cheeks were rosy from the cold air and they were both out of breath from running. He crouched down and gave them a hug and asked, “what are both of you doing here? I thought you were staying home to help your mother.” “But father, we are helping. Mother told us to bring you this for you and Ron.” They both lifted up baskets filled with an assortment of rice, dumplings, and some fruit. Master Dan thought for a moment and realized that a new chapter in their children’s lives was about to begin, especially for Wing. Estella must have had another dream. To his children he said, “Your mother seems to have prepared a feast, I’m sure she knew you both would be joining us for the meal.” He saw their eager faces nodding in agreement and laughed. “Well, come on then. Your brother is waiting.” The three continued their walk toward the Lake hand in hand. Karen and Wing were getting excited as they drew closer to the Lake. They’ve wanted to find out what their brother has been doing these past few weeks. However, their parents said they were too young to go to the Lake by themselves because one never knows what dangerous creatures might be lurking in the vicinity. Wing once got in trouble for suggesting that her brother’s friends were the only ugly creatures one has to worry about. She had only said it in jest, but her father told her sternly that it wasn’t good to speak ill of others in any way. She humbly nodded and apologized to her brother. Karen just shook her head and said they should just be patient because soon they’ll have their chance to go to the Lake. Wing wasn’t very patient, for what five-year-old is, but if Karen could do it she knows she could too. Then this morning her mother looked at her and said simply, “It’s time.” Soon after she and Karen were sent to run after their father who just had just left for the Lake. Karen had said smugly, “see I told you we’ll see the Lake soon.” When they cleared the forest, both Karen and Wing stared in awe at the frozen expanse of the Lake surrounded by majestic snow capped mountains. It was a beautiful sight and well worth the wait. Master Dan looked at both his children and smiled at their open-mouth expressions. “Be careful, now, children. A fly might find your mouth a perfect place to hide from the cold.” Immediately, two mouths closed simultaneously. “Good, now lets find your brother.” The two children followed their father still looking around them with eyes wide, trying to absorb all the details of the scenery. After a while Karen decided to catch up to their father while Wing stayed back. “Karen, where is your sister?” Master Dan asked. “She should be right behind us, I left her because she was being too slow again and kept looking back at something in the forest.” Karen answered innocently. Master Dan looked back and saw no sign of his youngest daughter. “Oh, no!”

“Karen, go find your brother and stay with him and his friends until I return. Do not, under any circumstances, go after me.” Master Dan cautioned his daughter. “But Ba, I’m sure Wing is alright, she always likes going off by herself sometimes,” Karen pleaded. “That was what I was afraid of and I warned your sister not to do so again for we live in uncertain times. Just do as I say, now.” “Yes father,” Karen said before running off to find her brother. Master Dan took his six-foot staff and removed the head of it. It revealed a blade that gleamed in the sunlight. He crouched down on the snow-covered ground and studied his little daughter’s tracks. It led to another part of the forest that he rarely goes to. He sighed. Wing’s inquisitiveness has always delighted him, but also gave him pause. He knew that he had to find something else for her to focus on in order to quench her thirst for learning. Her training in the many forms of the Fist as well as the Sword doesn’t seem to be enough. Despite the unease he felt for his daughter, he smiled. Her future husband will have his hands full, he thought. Maybe he should warn his friend, Lord Tetsuko, to make sure he upgrades his son’s training. He will need it. With that uncomfortable thought, he entered the forest. Wing had never had so much fun exploring. The forest she entered was different from the one her father had taken them through. The trees seemed more interesting with their gnarled branches. The roots of the trees seemed to have grown tired being underground and decided to snake over the ground before burying itself again. She started jumping over the roots, lifting her skirt slightly to keep from tripping. The trees had more character, she thought. The shadows on the grooves on the bark almost gave the trees a face that could best be described as smiling by a curious fun-loving five-year-old. Folk from the town nearby have never really ventured into the forest she’s entered. Those who have were too scared to really give a proper description of the Dark Forest, much less the trees. With one more hop over the roots, Wing then turned around and smiled at the row of trees. She then continued on her way, singing a tune, slightly off-key. Unbeknown to her, one of the faces smiled back, then started laughing a little before a figure emerged from its shadows. Its wings beating in tune with the howling wind. “My master will be pleased.” With a snap of his fingers, five of the Daemon’s minions emerged from the other trees as well; their colors changing from the dark brown color of the trees to their natural mottled purple. Their large heads with protruding fanged mouths focused on the small figure before them and started following. For immense creatures, they moved with stealth for their clawed feet made not a sound as they crushed the snow under them. “I will be greatly rewarded for this if I capture her.” He then flew off after the minions.

“I can’t wait to tell Karen about this place.” Wing said out loud. She didn’t notice that the forest had become deathly quiet. She spied a cave at the foot of a rocky hill ahead of her and approached it. Inside she saw a large furry creature outlined against the darkness. There was a smaller creature cuddled up beside it. She smiled at the sight of the sleeping duo and decided to move on. Before she got further she smelled a foul stench of sulfur and decay blended together. She turned around slowly and stared at the sight that greeted her. She screamed out loud before bolting past the hill. She didn’t want to go further in the forest, but had no choice for the purple creatures were blocking her path. She started shouting “onions, onions,” before stopping abruptly. “That’s not what father called them.” She thought for a few moments before realizing that one of the ‘onions’ were right behind her. She screamed again, but decided to deliver a front kick to the creature’s large shin. The minion growled more in annoyance than in pain. Wing started running again. She needed to find something to fend off the onions. The first scream startled him; the second one caused his heart to drop. “No!” Master Dan shouted before running towards the deep edge of the Dark Forest. His heart was beating fast, he still sensed his daughter, but he was running out of time. He didn’t want to transform to his animal form because he would be more vulnerable against whatever is ahead. He had a feeling the Daemon’s minions were on the prowl. He quickened his pace. He saw one of the minions and leaped up with his staff, the blade at the fore. The shadow creature saw the wise man and warned the minion. Master Dan’s blade missed the intended target as the minion jumped out of the way. Two other minions turned their attention to the newcomer, while the other two continued to pursue the little girl. “That’s right, come and get me. Let the girl alone. She is nothing to you,” Master Dan said as he spun his staff around to keep the minions away from him before posing in a side lunge position. He held his staff before him with his left hand, while his right arm slowly descended and bent close to his side. His hand, palm facing upwards, formed a fist. The shadow creature, unimpressed, replied, “one man alone facing three minions. I like the odds.” Master Dan said, “you don’t know me very well, do you.” With those words, he swung his staff as he turned and imbedded the blade deep into the minion that was about to pounce from behind him. He moved the blade upward to make sure the minion was never going to harm anyone again. The minion staggered backward before crumpling onto the ground. The shadow creature shouted, “get him!” The other two minions charged at the lone Tierrian with ferocity. Master Dan leaped out of the way and blocked the claws of one of the minions with his staff while delivering a side kick to the other one. Undeterred, the minions kept clawing at him. The shadow creature flew to the other two minions closing in on the little girl. He ordered one of them to take down the wise man. “Surely one minion can handle one little girl.” The other minion turned its large head and stared at the man fighting by the trees. It then thundered after him joining his kind at the barrage of attacks. Master Dan saw his chances dwindle since he was getting a little tired. He couldn’t focus thoroughly on his fight for he was more worried about his daughter’s safety. He swiped at the minion to the left and wounded its arm. He then heard another squeal from his daughter and looked in her direction. Wing was trying her best to defend herself by hurling rocks at the minion that was coming closer. The minion seemed to be biding its time, almost toying with her. One of the rocks hit it squarely on the head and that made the minion angry. “Wing! Run!” He shouted. Distracted, he didn’t see the hit coming until it was too late. The backhanded hit by the minion knocked him down. The other minion leaped above him, going for the kill. Master Dan quickly rolled away from the attack and stood up. He did a roundhouse kick that hit the minion right under its fanged mouth. Before the minion recovered, he struck its head with the end of his staff, then finished him off with the blade to the chest. “Two down, three to go,” he said before jumping away from another attack. “IAM, help me.”

Before he finished his words, he heard a growl. He knew it didn’t come from the minions. He looked in time to see a giant Panda leap at one of the minions and grab at its neck. He heard a crunching of bones and knew right away that the odds just got better. He thanked IAM for the timely intrusion of one of His creatures. He gave his attention to the Panda then looked at the last minion before him. He was about to face the minion when the Panda walked between him and the minion. Master Dan knew that he was just given reprieve. He eyed the Panda once more and nodded as if to say thanks. He then went after the minion that had cornered his daughter. He wasn’t sure he was going to make it in time. He can only make out the large minion’s back getting closer to his daughter who was huddled under a large tree with gnarled branches. The Shadow creature saw the wise man from afar and cursed under his breath. “I will still have the last laugh, Tierran.” With that he commanded the minion to strike at the little girl. “I’m sure the master would rather have her dead. The prophecy won’t be fulfilled without her.” He then disappeared through one of the shadows. The minion, looked at the little girl before him and raised it’s clawed hand high. One blow is all that was needed. Master Dan saw the upraised arm of the minion start to descend. He shouted, “No! Wing!” He knew he wouldn’t make it in time. He heard his daughter scream. Suddenly, a bright light stopped him in his tracks. He then heard deafening thunder right after. He looked again in the direction of his daughter, not sure of what he’ll see. The sight before him spurred him to drop his staff and run towards his daughter again. He saw his daughter, tears flowing down her cheeks as he got closer. She was coughing from the smoke she inhaled while crawling away from the burning corpse of the minion. Wing saw her father and ran towards his open arms. Master Dan hugged his daughter closely and said, “I thought I lost you, little one.” He then stared at the burning corpse. There was a large, gnarled branch burning on top of it. He looked up and stared at the tree. There was a burn mark on the area where the branch came from. He remembered the flash of light and the thunderous noise. “It was lightning, father. I saw it,” his daughter said quietly. Master Dan looked up through the branches of the forest and saw nothing but clear blue sky above them. He looked at the scene before him again, then at his daughter. He smiled, carried his daughter and said, “yes little one, it was lightning.” *** “I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I promise never to touch your armor again.” A little boy said while covering his head with his arms. His older brother, the 11 year old heir to the Kariya Shogunate stared at his brother with confusion. “What are you talking about?” He asked. His brother looked up and said, “you don’t know? One moment you were doing your Kata, and then you turned towards me with your eyes glowing. Then your sword glowed and lightning went through you and hit the branch on the tree behind me. If I wasn’t so fast, the branch probably would have hit me.” Although he knew his brother wouldn’t hurt him, he said this to get at his brother for giving him the scare of his young life. He then stuck his tongue out for effect. Tetsuhiko stared at the burning branch behind his brother and apologized. His father came running towards them along with some of his men. Tetsuhiko and his brother bowed before giving the explanation of what happened. Lord Tetsuko listened silently. He dismissed both his sons and his men and remained by the burning branch. He looked up at the blue sky above him then at the retreating back of his oldest son. “Lightning,” he said softly, then smiled.

The wind blew softly, but enough to cause some snow to fall from the branches of the gnarled trees. Master Dan knew they were winds of change. He hugged his daughter more closely to him as he started walking away from the burning corpse of the minion. He still could not believe what just occurred, glancing again at the clear sky above him, there was only one other time he was witness to that same phenomenon. “The betrothal.” He didn’t realize he said those words out loud. “What’s a betrodol?” Wing asked quietly, lifting her head from his shoulder. Shaken from his reverie, Master Dan looked at his daughter and smiled. “A little boy asked his father that once too. A betrothal is a mutual contract between…” he was about to continue, but noticed his daughter’s suddenly confused look. “Hmmn, maybe I should take my friend’s advice and wait until you are older too.” His daughter sighed and put her head back on his shoulder. He knew that Wing’s curiosity was going to get the better of her. “Baba, what’s a mu-muchial contract?” He heard her whisper in his ear. His shoulder’s started shaking with laughter. “Oh Wing, you never seize to amaze me. I hope your future hus…” Master Dan sighed and said again, “when you are older, you will understand.” Wing, not satisfied with the answer, was about to repeat her question when something else caught her eye. “Father, stop, look.” Wing said. The urgency in his daughter’s voice made Master Dan alert. They weren’t completely out of danger yet since they were still deep within the Dark Forest. He followed his daughter’s gaze and became saddened with the sight that met his eyes. He slowly lowered his daughter to the snow covered ground and started walking towards the creature. He heard his daughter following and said, “Wing, stay back, I don’t want you to see this.” Wing acquiesced. He looked around and noted all the dead minions, their still warm corpses melting the snow around it. He readied his staff just in case all was not what it seemed. Upon reaching his destination, he kneeled by the fallen Panda. It was still breathing but barely. He surveyed the damage inflicted by the minion on its body and knew that he was too late to save it. His hands tightened on his staff. He looked into the eyes of the Panda, once bright and alert, now half-closed in pain. He knew what he had to do. He slowly rubbed his hands over its large head. It was wet with blood. He took his staff and unsheathes the blade hidden in it. “Forgive me, my gentle friend.” The Panda groaned in response. It lifted its head slowly with the little strength it had left and stared in the direction of Wing. Master Dan turned and saw the stricken look on his daughters face and said, “Wing, turn around, shut your eyes.” “But father, why, what…” tears were already running down her eyes as she said those words. “I have to, my child, to end its suffering,” Master Dan said gravely. “I understand,” she said bravely, “but I won’t ever like it,” but did as her father said shutting her eyes tightly as she turned around. “I never did, my child, I never did.” With those words, Master Dan gave his attention back to the unwanted task at hand. He raised his staff and before he initiated its descent he looked at the Panda’s eyes again. The Panda slowly nodded it’s large head one last time, as if to signal its readiness to meet its fate. “Goodbye my friend…and thank you.”

Wing could not keep her eyes shut. She turned her head to take a peek, but lost her resolve as soon as she saw the staff descend. So she ran as fast as she could away not really caring where she went. She ended up in familiar territory though, the cave by the hill. Tired and mentally worn she sat down by the wall next to the mouth of the cave, covered her face with her hands, and cried. Suddenly she felt something lick the back of her hand. She peeked through her fingers and squealed in surprise. The little creature jumped back and squealed too. Wing realized she was in no danger for it was the same furry creature she saw sleeping in the cave with its mother. It’s mother? “Oh, no, you poor little one, you’re looking for your mother aren’t you?” Wing slowly offered her hand out again, the Panda cub approached slowly. It sniffed her proffered hand, recognized the scent and lost its fear. It settled itself comfortably next to Wing and slept. “Wish I could do that too, but I have to go back to father.” “You don’t have to, I’m right here,” a familiar voice said. “Baba!” Forgetting that the little Panda was sleeping next to her, she immediately stood up, much to the great annoyance of the cub. “Careful, my child, you don’t want to make your new friend mad.” Master Dan said. “Oh, it won’t. It likes me. Its mother…” Wing was afraid to continue. “is at peace now.” Master Dan said quietly. “Oh…Baba…can we keep it? I promise to take care of it. It’s an orphan now.” Master Dan looked at his daughter pleading for the little Panda cub. “Its mother helped save our lives, how can I refuse.” Upon giving his permission, his daughter’s face broke into a huge smile. “Thank you, Baba.” “You are very welcome, my child. Now come, we have been gone for so long, your brother and sister will be so worried.” He said as he took his daughter’s hand. They both started walking back towards the entrance of the forest, past all the dead minions, and the gnarled trees. The little panda following playfully behind them but stopped upon seeing its mother’s body. Wing went back and picked up the little cub and snuggled her face on its soft black and white fur. “Don’t worry little one, you’re part of my family now.” She then ran back to her father carrying her precious bundle. Master Dan was proud of how his daughter handled the adversities she faced today. He patted her head as she caught up to him. “So, my little one, have you decided to name him?” Master Dan asked. “Yes, since it’s smaller than me, I’ll call it Chibi Kuma.” Wing replied. Master Dan was taken aback by his daughter’s use of Nipponese for she’s only started to learn it a few weeks ago. She wasn’t even very receptive at first of studying the foreign language, even questioned its importance to her future. For someone who liked learning, he wasn’t expecting that question from her at all. He laughed after realizing he gave her the same answer then that he already used twice today. “When you’re older, you’ll understand,” he had said. Now he sees her utilizing it. This was good news indeed. “Your little bear won’t always be little,” he said cheerfully. “I’ll worry about that when he grows up, father.” *** “Why are you smiling?” Wing looked up to see her sister Karen standing next to her. She’s gotten so tall and beautiful, Wing thought to herself and sighed. “I’m still short,” Wing suddenly said out loud. Karen, knowing exactly what her little sister was thinking, smiled and said, “you did not answer my question.” She nudged Wing’s extremely large Panda, with the laughably ironic name of Chibi Kuma, to move. It lazily acquiesced. Karen sat next to Wing and waited. “I was just reminiscing about the past.” Wing said. “And worried about the future, I imagine…still upset at father for not telling you for so long?” Karen asked. “You mean you knew?” Wing questioned. “Yes…you’re not going to run away are you?” Karen asked worriedly. “No, I never back out of challenge. The Quadriad is almost upon us, there is no turning back.” Wing said. Karen burst into laughter. “What’s so funny?” Wing asked, astonished at her sister still trying to control her mirth. “I believe you have it the other way around, little sister. It’s you that will be a challenge to Lord Tetsuhiko. I almost pity the man.” “You are of no help.” Wing said joining in the laughter.

“You did what?” The eyes of the Daemon were glowing red with anger. He couldn’t believe that his servant had done the unthinkable. “You allowed the girl to be killed without my permission? I had specifically asked for you to capture her alive, Una had plans for her, but you disobeyed.” The Daemon continued, pacing back and forth on the cold floors of the cavern. His heavy footsteps echoing down the dark halls, disturbing the eerie silence that was the norm. Una was right, he thought to himself. Oni’s recklessness was becoming a detriment to his plans. Something had to be done. “But Master, the girl was left unharmed…all is well.” Oni said in a shaky voice. He knew he had erred. “We had everything under control until the girl’s father appeared. The minions would have destroyed him if it wasn’t for the interference of those cursed bears.” “If you did not panic, you may still have had the girl in your grasp, the fight was projected in the hologram, my minions almost had the girl. Then you left them to finish her off.” The Daemon said. “Her demise would serve the same purpose, the 9th Shogun would never meet his mate.” Oni argued. “ENOUGH!!!” The Daemon shouted. The shadow creature crouched lower, his head almost touching the floor. He shook with fear. The Daemon smelled the fear. “I told you that my plans were to control her in the future so that my power will be complete. Have you forgotten this? The young Shogun will get his due, it was because of him that I was banished in that cold prison. What better way to exact my revenge than to have his mate cause his destruction? I want him to suffer slowly.” The Daemon then approached the shadow creature and picked him up by his neck. “I cannot afford another mistake from those who serve me. I have no patience for that.” As he said this, his demonic features began to change. His red hard skin became flesh, his horns disappeared into a head full of dark hair, and his third eye disappeared into the creased forehead of Tavio Cinque, his Tierran host. “Although I could easily put an end to your miserable life, I may still have use for you. For now, you shall labor in the Catacombs.” “But sire, who shall serve you? That witch can’t do all for you…” Before he could continue, the shadow creature disappeared. “I shall find another.” Tavio said as he stared at the hand that once held the scrawny neck of the shadow creature. “Finally, I don’t have to deal with that creature again until later...much later.” Una said as she approached Tavio. “He ruined your plans, my dear.” Tavio said. “Don’t worry, I have others, but they can wait. A five-year-old girl would have been nothing but a nuisance in Isutania. We cannot have the other Tierran leaders question our doings. You are due to meet with them in the morning.” Una said. “Shower them with riches, they do everything you ask them to do. They aren’t much of a challenge.” Tavio said as he turned away from Una. He continued, “you are right, my dear, we should wait until the girl is older. When she starts achieving her dreams, then we start our assault again.”

“Twelve years I’ve been laboring in the Catacombs, demoted and stripped of my glory all because of that Witch.” The shadow creature said as he continued to dig the ditch that was his lot in life these days in the Daemon’s trophy room. The Catacombs contained bones of past warriors who opposed his Master in ancient battles. Does one ever get used to being surrounded by death, he had once questioned. “I shall find a way out of this place, and be free of my contract with the Daemon.” Oni said. His hatred for the Daemon and his mistress had grown with each passing year he spent in the bowels of Tierra. “Talking to yourself again?” A sultry voice said from behind him. The shadow creature tried to fly away from her, but his shackles prevented him from going far. Una laughed. She was going to enjoy toying with the winged creature. The Daemon has granted her wish to make him her puppet. “What do you want, witch?” Oni spat out. “The Daemon has summoned you to his throne room at Isutania.” With that, the shackles fell from the shadow creature’s limbs. Suddenly he found himself kneeling before the Premier of Isutania, Tavio Cinque, who was comfortably seated on a plush throne encrusted with jewels. Oni looked around the room. It was large and opulent. The floor was of black marble as were the huge columns that lined the sides of the room. “Master, what is thy bidding?” He said in mocked reverence. Tavio laughed and said, “Ah Oni, you may now address me as El Sin. It is my new title. It fits, does it not? The Catacombs have not been good to you, I see. No matter, I have use of your shadow skills.” “What for? I thought the witch was able to supply all your needs.” Oni answered back. “The Quadriad is but a fortnight away. Nations have gathered their best to compete in their respective tournaments. The Chosen Ones are to go meet, fall in love, and live happily ever after according to the Prophecy.” Tavio said. “Sire, you forget that your downfall was clearly written in the Prophecy too.” Oni answered, knowingly goading the Daemon. He could do this as long as the Daemon had use for him. “It is no wonder I detest fairy tales!” Tavio said disgustingly. “That is why I need for you to bring my lovely Una to the side of Tetsuhiko Kariya. She is to nurse him back to good health and make him forget about his duties to his father.” “Me? Aid that witch. I think not.” Oni hissed, giving Una a look of hatred. Una just smiled sweetly in return and said, “you have no choice in this matter Oni, whatever I say, you will do from now on. Your contract was given to me by the Daemon. You serve me now.” “You can’t do this.” Oni said to Tavio. “I already have, for I have found another to take your place.” was the terse response. Oni never thought he would be replaced. He soon realized that if didn’t give his allegiance to Una, he would be killed without a second thought. He had to agree to this plan no matter how much he detested the witch. He remained silent in their presence, all the while thinking of the new developments. Una is cunning and ruthless, but will be easier to thwart her than the Daemon. If he bided his time, he won’t be a slave for long. He shall be free one day to join his kind again. If they still exist, that is. He had offered himself as a servant to the Daemon to protect his kin. The contract was made. However, he found out early that the Daemon was without mercy in every battle that Oni witnessed in the past. He could be the last of his kind, he thought sadly. He then gave his attention back to El Sin. “Do you give your allegiance?” Tavio asked. “I do,” Oni said, bowing low. Without lifting his head, he asked cautiously, “What is to happen to the young Shogun?” “Let’s just say he shall encounter a little accident on ice.”

Wow...thanks lilsugar. My sincerest apologies to all for not finishing this story. It's been ages since I've even gone back to this story. I'm still deciding if I should touch on it again since my muses (MK, PK) are now on separate coasts and probably will never meet again. Well, that's what fanfics are for. A lot of things have gone on since I wrote the story and though I still have an outline of how I originally wanted the story to go, I may have to incorporate a lot of changes...and edit the original too. We'll see. Again, thanks for the encouragement!!! And for all who were waiting, feel free to :fryingpan me since I deserve it.
