Is it just me or do you notice a negative tone in most of the articles written about Michelle and the championships. I hate when they say she "undermined her chances" or SA "topples Kwan to win gold". With all she has done for the past decade and longer, when will somebody give her a break for simply doing her best...

They do that because it's huge news when someone beats Kwan...doesn't happen that often. :lol

It doesn't really matter I take everything from the newspapers with a grain of salt.

When a person is at the top, others love to see them fall or stumble. That's just the nature of the beast, I guess. Michelle knows that after all these years and the news writers just want to put a headline that grabs your attention rather than just saying Arkawa wins gold at Worlds, Cohen silver and Kwan bronze.

It's alright kim, those type of journalists cannot ever be pleased by Michelle. That's okay, we still got next season. It's all good.

Kim,
Unfortunately news media have always written about MK in this fashion. They don't understand the sport and her place in it. What makes MK's career so truly remarkable is that she has accomplished so much with roadblocks from critics, naysayers and from judges too, placed in her path. The only somewhat balanced or laudatory articles have come after MK has knocked their socks off with her sheer talent, determination and incomparable achievements!

Who cares what the press says? They have to grab their readers attention not cater to the feelings of Michelle Kwan fans. :-)

yea i agree...kwan winning has become so common that anyone beating her will be HUGE news...newspapers love to sell newspapers, that's their business and catchy headlines and all that does sell.....and face it, some people love to see those on top tumble....i guess it makes some people feel better about themselves, maybe, that we're all human and we all make mistakes...big stars making mistakes just makes them seem more human, i guess... but what do i know..

I wouldn't worry about it. From a press, most of whom know little about FS, its expected that they'd play up the angle of a champion not repeating a world title win. They're probably thrilled not to have to print "Kwan wins again!" they won't get better sales from that:rolleyes . Too bad they'll have a lot of it in the next two years;) :evil

That's what comes from being as famous as Michelle. Look around at other sports. When someone other than Tiger Woods wins a competition, the headline almost inevitably reads "Tiger loses" rather than "So-and-so won".
In a strange way, it's kind of a compliment to Michelle. And it's definitely recognition of her position in the sport.

they use those tactics to make headlines that people will read. the funny part is that they fail to mention that kwan received 6 perfect 6.0's.
anyway, those are associated press articles. they are always shallow. i know a guy who writes for the ap. they are no where near the actual action. they sit in an office and make the story based on a news wire that comes over the fax.

Just think Michelle will be the only person in figure skating to lose and recapture her title 4 times. Now that's a champion. She lost the title but she won a Bronze Medal. Usually when champions fall off the podium, they fall way off. Not Michelle. Why? Because she is not done yet and that is the greatest gift Michelle that Michelle can give us. I can't wait for next year.
OMG, it will be an awesome year. From what I am hearing there are many improvements to her skating. Not many skaters can improve after so many years. Just our Michelle.

As Michelle would say, she didn't lose the 2004 World Title because it was never hers to begin with!
