Hi everyone! I will be learning spins soon. Can anyone give me some hints on doing spins and how to do a well-centered spin? What can I do to prepare for spins? Thanks in advance!

How long have you been skating? I have been skating for 8 years and competing one tip for spins are keep your arms togetyher and feet far apart then bring your feet in as you spin!:)
GOOD LUCK!!:)

I'm a recreational skater-- I've taught myself crossovers fowards and backwards, and I can even do an attempt of a waltz jump if wearing skates that are good enough. I can do 2-foot spins alright, but getting a one-footed spin going is very hit or miss-- I always tend to get the toe pick caught, and usually need to put the other foot down for balance. Any suggestings for getting a good center and speed?

My coach told me to get a centered forward scratch spin, just don't pull in too quick. That will help you get it centered-it worked for me!

I'm not that great a skater, and like that other girl, my spins are pretty hit or miss, but I've kept trying & now they're ok. My friend says you should practice different stages on the spin seperately, like stage 1 is with your one foot and arms out. Stage 2 is one leg crossed over the other and arms crossed, and stage 3 is 1 foot crossing the other foots ankles, but not touching the ice. arms are all the way down.

How flexible are you for doing a spiral on that leg? Assuming your right legged, your left leg has to have a considerably good spiral before you can start doing a camel (or you won't be able to bring it up). I find what helps for me is that as I'm doing the 3turn going into it I have to really push the second half of the 3turn and swing my leg up with momentum. Oh, and make sure you go into it with speed.

As far as spins go, just keep practicing! One day it will just hit you and boom, you just get it. Take all the advice you recieve and do it, and eventually you'll get it. It takes time to master those darned spins.:SS

The first spin you'll learn is the two foot spin. While I was learning the thing that I tried to remember was to make both legs do the same thing (so I don't travel).
Some people start their two foot spin on their toe pick, but for me the easiest way was to start just standing regularly, and then to push my right leg forward and pull my left leg back in a swivel motion. Then I'd pull my feet in 'til they were side by side (while also pulling in my arms).
Hope that helps!;)
