I live in California and will be going to Toronto, Canada for a conference later this summer. I'm planning to take my skates with me, since I hear there are tons of rinks in Toronto.

As for packing my skates, do you think I should take them as carry-on, even though they are heavy to carry around? Or do you think it would be okay to pack them in my suitcase? I'm just worried that my skates might be damaged, since suitcases do get thrown around and stacked a lot by the airport employees.

What do you think?

Why don't you just put it in your suitcase and put it in the middle of all your clothes it will not ruin them. That is what I do with my skates all the time.:) Because I hate bringing skates as carry ons i did that once because my mom told me too.
Good Luck!!:)

Always bring your skates on carryon. There is always a small chance that your luggage will get lost or something else will happen to it on a plane flight. If your skates are in there, you suddenly won't have anything to skate in! Even though it's a small chance anything will happen to your skates, it's better not to take any chances and keep them with you.

I agree, always carry your skates with you. I learned that traveling to competitions and seeing people lose theirs. If your space is limited, empty your skate bag or put them in a different bag so you can bring entertainment, too.
