View Full Version : Who's kicking thier family out during the Olys?

I think I'm going to send my fiance out of the house on the night of the Olympic Long. I can never watch Michelle compete with other people in the room, and I think for the Olympics I won't even be able to have anyone in the house! Well if I knew some MK fans then I could do that, but since I don't I prefer to watch alone. Who else has to "throw out" the family?

I've never had to throw out my family; they KNOW better:D Lucky for me, my mom and sister are both big skating fans and love Michelle. I had to watch the '98 games with my college suitemates, though, and that was an entirely different story. One of them knew nothing about skating and the other was a die-hard Lipinski fan. Ohhh, the agony! After that, I vowed I would always watch it alone. But in '02, my fiance watched the entire season with me and just HAD to watch the Olympics to see how it all ended (as if it was reality tv and the Olympics were the final episode). I didn't regret it at all; it was nice to share my Michelle obsession with someone I cared about and who cared enough about me to be supportive rather than condescending. Rather than ridicule me with a "It's a just a skater! You don't really know her!" he joined in with me when I screamed at the tv "Irina over Michelle in the LP?!?!?!?! These judges are on CRACK!!!!"

Well in my case there are rules, you cheer for your fav. and don't "cheer" against someone elses favorite.
Of course that never works :rollin , but we try.
And in the end we find a way to be satisfied with the results.

Oh it'll be a family affair I believe. My mom & dad will definitely watch it with me...although my sister won't be able to because she'll be away for college:( My brothers will probably just come in to see what happens...they'll probably know without seeing it based on my yelling;)

Not only am I kicking everyone out, I'm requesting the night off! I work nights, so I miss a lot of good TV... but not this night! I think I'll need to request the SP night off, too....

Anyway, I tried to watch FS with others in the room during the 2003 nationals. Never again. I was the only FS fan, so regardless of my pleas, the others teased me and made lots of noise so I couldn't even hear Dick Button, much less the music!

lol GoldenMichelle :) Yea, I am kicking the guys out (my Dad, bro, fiance) while me and my mom sit on pins and needles. IF they even THINK of peeping during that time, they know there will be serious consequences. :) Of course, we are fair about it and give them a warning first. ;)

I'll be living alone during the school year, and I had better NOT have company during the ladies long. I WILL be a bad hostess!

Now I want to know: I'll be picking out a TV for my apartment based soley on how skating will look on the screen, am I obsessed?

Funny topic, because it's true for me! I'm praying that my dad will have to be at work late the night of the LLP since his schedule changes from week to week. In '02, my Dad walked in just as it came up on the screen that Michelle had fallen to third :( So, I'm hoping it's just my mom and me alone that night... we'll probably sit next to each other holding hands, praying with all our might!

Just to add, it won't be the first time to hope it's just mom and me... we've been known to send my dad out on errands during Campbell's cheesefest and not to invite *anyone* over on any day that MK competes!

My husband is a great help during the big events. He makes sure the kids are not bothering me. However, this entire figure skating season, my husband will be in Iraq:(
So I will have to bribe my kids with everything imaginable to leave me alone!!!!!

Ha! Never! My family is used to my figure skating mania and know how important that the televised comeptitions are. They're rooting for MK with me! Because of me, they're MK fans... I wouldn't let them live anything else down! As far as the night of the Oly long goes... I'm going to be a wreck and I know I'm going to cry buckets no matter the result. I can't wait for it!

First things first though... I'm attending Nationals the month before. So that's mostly what is on my mind at the moment!

Fortunately I'm single and I don't have to worry about interruptions. In fact I actually take the whole week off whenever Worlds and Olympics comes around. My boss thinks I'm crazy! But I'm a spoiler freak that recognizes it wouldn't be fair to my company to be on the internet the whole time at work trolling for practice updates and any pre-aired competition details. I will definitely need to be spoiled for Turino given the time difference.

I too know that I will cry buckets whether Michelle wins or not (for different reasons of course).

As much as my Mother loves skating. She is not a fanatic like I am. She is able to love the sport without getting emotionally involved unlike me. I drive her crazy. I get so emotional when it comes to Michelle, she may kick me out.

From one Jamie to another, I say, absolutely NOT, sounds like someone with good priorities to me!

;-)

I'm single, so what I say goes in my house. If bf is here, he better be quiet as a churchmouse...and not say anything about how, "MK is all elbows"...to which I will say, "whatever, go to the garage and fix something please!!!"

I'd love to have the whole two weeks off, I love a lot of the winter events, but I am taking off over a week for Nationals the month before, so I can't. I did take the day after the ladies long off, which is my bday, hopefully we'll be celebrating more than just that.

I always watch with my kids. I had this superstition not to let my oldest fall asleep because he fell asleep during the 98 Olympics and 99 Worlds. I was kind of glad he did during the Olympics! I remember being so upset and I looked at him and he was sound asleep! He was only five and now his two younger ones watch with us. I wish there were more skating fans around my so I could watch with fellow MKFer's. Figureskating is just not big in Eastern NC!

I also would like to be alone. I live alone, so that's helpful, but I might have to tell the bf to stay away for those two nights. Which might be tricky, because my plan is also to watch it alone but have him tape it at his place. He has cable, and I do not. My NBC is kind of fuzzy, so while I want to watch it alone, I'd also like a clear copy to keep.

There is only one person I know around here who is even remotely a Michelle fanatic like I am. I think she has a big screen tv. If she invites me over I'd probably go, because I think she'd cry along with me (either way).

I don't want cable, for a lot of reasons, but have considered getting it for just the figure skating season so I could watch all the comps. (Will the GP comps be on ESPN or something?) Either that or the bf better remember to tape everything for me! I can just hear him now: Why don't you come over here and watch it? Me: Um, no. I can't be around you. But you should still do my bidding. :)

In any case, I am looking forward to sitting alone on the couch, maybe with some wine and a few snacks for nervous-eating, and getting all anxious and excited for every moment of the Olympics.

Me: Um, no. I can't be around you. But you should still do my bidding.

That is way too funny. I watched the last two Olympics with my family. BIG MISTAKE!!!!!!!! They either kept on talking, kept on staring at me for my reaction or kept dissing Michelle. Keep in mind, that when MK skates well, they say that she is obviously the "best skater in the world".

My mom goes to palm readers and the like. They have told her that she has psychic powers and that we are the descendents of witchdoctors. :rollin Anyways, she puts little "curses" on certain skaters .....and they work!!!! She has even done it to MK, and she thought it was funny. But it was NOT FUNNY. In the Worlds SP 1999, when MK went into the triple lutz, my mom yelled "Fall, fall" and MK almost fell but held on. On the next jump, my mom chanted again...and long and behold.....MK fell. My mom has also put curses on Sasha Cohen many times.....and as we all know.......Sasha has fallen many times. My mom felt very guilty b/c Sasha is her favourite. (By the way, my mom does this all in good humour. She isn't a witch)

In the Olympics 2002, I was soo tense and I couldn't watch with my family in the room. My sister barged into the room right at the moment that MK fell, and my sister yelled "Nooooo!". My sister needs to stay away from the TV this year.

Anyways, this year, it has become much more complicated. I am moving to France, which means that I won't have to watch with my family. Bad news, is that I don't know where I can watch the coverage, especially in English. I am seriously thinking about checking into a hotel with cable TV and watching MK all by myself. Sheesh, it sounds like I am organizing some secret drug deal.

I thought I was the only crazy one. :rollin This is a really funny thread. :FL

I don't think I'll have to kick anyone out. Well, my little brother maybe, but the rest of my family knows better than to bug me dufing an important Michelle moment!:b My dad has even gotten to the point recently where he'll come home and I'm on the forum and he'll say "How's Michelle doing today?" lol:rollin So ya, they'll probably be watching with me, but they shouldn't be a problem. And I'm sure they'll be rooting for Michelle as well...like some of you I've turned them into loyal fans:D

I'll probably be alone... but I do like having my mom around for the extra support. However, during 2004 Nationals my parents ruined it by talking loudly throughout her skate and I kept on telling them to be quiet. But it's weird thinking about the Olympics because like many of you I know I'll be crying no matter what happens, so I can expect that whole week I'll be on the edge. In 98 I saw Michelle skate and then did not know the outcome until later that day... you can imagine how I felt then. And I don't even want to think of that night in 02, I don't think I've cried so hard since. But maybe I'll find a group of Mk supporters to watch it with, or call some of them afterwards. Wow, I'm already nervous thinking about it!

My mom is where I got my "skating fan gene" from, so I love watching with her - as long as she is as into it as I am. It makes a huge difference if people are as excited as you are, or can at least understand it. During the '02 Olympics, it HAD to be absolutely silent in my house. She looked at me like I was crazy on the night of the SP when I started crying during Michelle's spiral sequence. During the LP, I'll never forget, when Michelle landed her first jump, my mom winced and said "oh, she looks tight". I looked at her like she had just driven over my dog and said "Either believe or leave.":lol It was nice to have someone to cry with, though...and we watched the medal ceremony just because Michelle made us so damn proud.

This time around, I want my mom to be there and I want to be holding my sistas' hands and smiling...just waiting for the roar:D

one of sisters doesnt live with us. the olympics are during midwinter break so my brother will be gone. and it's usually my other sis, my mom, dad (who enjoys singing along to the music), and me.

im usually the one who says, "fall!" when the other skaters skate but i wont this time. im not worried about the short but i might (depending on how brave i am) ask my neighbor (who is litterally next door) if we could watch on one of his big screen tvs (he has 2).

but i'll also need food, soda, milk, orange juice, chicken, junior mints, and lots of sugar. heck, this is like the superbowl for me! (my family and i dont watch the superbowl)

and probably through the approx 4 mins i'll be praying and saying this over and over, "skate your best, win gold, skate your best, win gold, work hard be yourself, and have fun" and then...during KC im going to get nervous as the scores appear and then freak out if she gets high marks OR if she skates last and she skates beautifully then im going to scream for joy and come to mkf first to share the happiness (then i think mkf will be flooded) and send emails to everyone.

Now I want to know: I'll be picking out a TV for my apartment based soley on how skating will look on the screen, am I obsessed?Sounds perfectly normal to me! In 1998 I subscribed to cable & in 2002 I upgraded my TV (1st new TV in 20 years :lol )

My only family is my hubby and he will definitely be by my side listening to me blather & cheering with me!

I can identify with the new tee vee for the Olympics. In the fall of 1997, I bought the television I have now.My main motivation to go ahead and replace the olde Quasar set with a new RCA XL100 was the 1998 Olympics. This set works fine still and I have a new startegy for 2006 Olympics.Keep it and watch the ladies shorts and freeskates on it.By now,Michelle Kwan is haunting this television :lol so it should work with the rest of my Kwan Gold in Italy voodoo.:evil <!--EZCODE BR START--><!--EZCODE BR END-->I live with my mum,who enjoys watching the Olympics.........not a huge big fan like me,but she's cool.My nephew(25) also lives here, but has been saying he and a friend are getting their own pad...........I hope it happens before Skate America.:evil He isn't into any of the cool stuff, like figure skating, baseball, housework, yardwork, hard work,r&b or even c&w........he doesn't even like Michelle Kwan.:rolleyes Yup,I love him,but I also hope he and his buddy find their dreamhome.:D

The children will probably have to go because they have this annoying habit of speaking :D . That means hubby will have to go with them unless we take them to grandma's and he can stay if he promises to be quiet while Michelle skates. He has gotten much better about keeping a lid on it at key times. I would probably have my sister on speaker phone since she is also a fan but is too far away. Either way I'll record it so I can watch it again in private.

I actually thought of visiting my friends in Vienna, Austria in February so I could watch the LP live on European TV !! I don't expect to do it though since I'm going to visit them on my vacation in November.

I'll probably watch it alone but on the phone with my friend who's a bigger skating nut than I am! We live in different cities now, so we do all the big comps on the phone together.

I don't watch with people who I don't know well! My worst experience was the 1998 Olys, when I was watching the long with a bunch of folks who were rabid Todd Eldredge fans. Now, I'm very fond of him as well, but their fandom took the form of screaming "FALL! FALL!" at the top of their lungs while Candeloro was skating, and I couldn't hear anything or enjoy his really charismatic program. Remains one of my most annoying skating-watching experiences.

I just wish there were more michelle kwan fans here in florida. My whole family loves michelle and is rooting for her. :angel

Yep, I'll be alone for the Olys. I think that my boyfriend will be in the house, but I'm going to have to do it alone. I get too emotional good or bad for anyone to be around me! :)
Go Michelle!:CHO
