View Full Version : MK CD Project: Songs that start with "O"
Jenny
March 28th, 2001, 06:55 PM
Since the letter "O" is in all 5 phrases that we're choosing from for the Tribute CD, I figure we might as well start brainstorming songs that start with "O." Everyone is welcome to post their "O" songs below, or say what "O" song would be their choice, and then based on everyone's input, we'll make a poll of the top 5 songs that start with "O" for everybody to vote on. I hope that makes sense!
Oh, and it might be helpful to include a link to lyrics and/or a sound file of the songs you suggest.

Lyrics:
Pretty woman, walkin' down the street, pretty woman
The kind I like to meet, pretty woman
I don't believe you, you're not the truth
No one could look as good as you. Mercy!
Pretty woman, Won't you pardon me? Pretty woman,
I couldn't help but see, pretty woman, that you look lovely as can be.
Are you lonely just like me? Wow!
Pretty woman, stop awhile.
Pretty woman, talk awhile
Pretty woman, give your smile to me.
Pretty woman, yeah, yeah, yeah
Pretty woman, look my way
Pretty woman, say you'll stay with me
'Cause I need you, I'll treat you right
Come with me baby, be mine tonight
Pretty woman, don't walk on by
Pretty woman, don't make me cry
Pretty woman, don't walk away, Hey, O.K.
If that's the way it must be, O.K.
I guess I'll go on home. It's late.
There'll be tomorrow night, but wait!
What do I see? Is she walking back to me?
Yeah, she's walking back to me, Oh, oh, pretty woman

Lyrics:
Each day I live,
I want to be,
A day to give,
The best of me.
I'm only one,
But not alone,
My finest day,
Is yet unknown.
I broke my heart,
Fought every gain,
To taste the sweet,
I face the pain.
I rise and fall,
Yet through it all,
This much remains.
I want one moment in time,
When I'm more than I thought I could be.
Then all of my dreams are a heartbeat away,
And the answers are all up to me.
Give me one moment in time,
When I'm racing with destiny,
Then in that one moment of time,
I will feel,
I will feel eternity.
I've lived to be,
The very best.
I want it all,
No time for less.
I've laid the plans,
Now lay the chance,
Here in my hands.
Give me one moment in time,
When I'm more than I thought I could be.
When all of my dreams are a heartbeat away,
And the answers are all up to me.
Give me one moment in time,
When I'm racing with destiny.
Then in that one moment of time,
I will feel,
I will feel eternity.
You're a winner for a lifetime,
If you seize that one moment in time,
Make it shine.
Give me one moment in time,
When I'm more than I thought I could be,
When all of my dreams are a heartbeat away,
And the answers are all up to me.
Give me one moment in time,
When I'm racing with destiny.
Then in that one moment of time,
I will be,
I will be,
I will be free.
I will be free

Lyrics:
Who can say where the road goes,
Where the day flows?
Only time...
And who can say if your love grows,
As your heart chose?
Only time...
(chants)
Who can say why your heart sighs,
As your love flies?
Only time...
And who can say why your heart cries,
When your love dies?
Only time...
(chants)
Who can say when the roads meet,
That love might be,
In your heart.
And who can say when the day sleeps,
If the night keeps all your heart?
Night keeps all your heart...
(extended chants)
Who can say if your love grows,
As your heart chose?
Only time...
And who can say where the road goes,
Where the day flows?
Only time...
Who knows?
Only time...
Who knows?
Only time...

I like ONe moment in time or Ode to Joy

Nice try, Micheal with your Joy Luck Club campaign. ;)
Here are my takes on all the songs suggested so far....
"Ode To Joy" -- Wonderful, inspiring music. Fits Michelle. My one concern is how it will fit with the rest of the songs that ultimately get chosen. I'm hoping we'll end up with a mix of all different styles of music (pop, oldies, folk, jazz, r&b, etc.), but I'm thinking a classical song might stand out a little <!--EZCODE ITALIC START--> too<!--EZCODE ITALIC END--> much from all the rest. I could be wrong about that though, and I definitely wouldn't be unhappy if this does get chosen.
"One Moment In Time" -- This was one of my own suggestions, and although I think the lyrics fit perfectly, and Whitney has an amazing voice, I'm wondering if this song falls into the "too obvious" category. Especially since it was specifically performed at the Olympics.... I'd probably choose to vote for a song that's a little more subtle in it's message.
"Oh, Pretty Woman" -- A great, fun, classic song that describes Michelle inside & out. Roy Orbison is a legend like Michelle. Maybe....
"One Voice" -- The only thing I like about this song is that the singer is a "young phenom" like Michelle, but I don't think the lyrics fit her particularly well.
"Orinoco Flow"/"Only Time" -- Enya's style of music is very lyrical which fits Michelle. As I stated already, I think "Only Time" would be a better choice of the two. There was even anearlier thread (http://pub1.ezboard.com/fmichellekwanforummkfanchat.showMessage?topicID=65 50.topic) about the song before this whole CD project started (which is what led me to suggest it as an alternative to the other Enya song).
"Oops!...I did It Again!" -- At first, I thought we were going to use a phrase more like "Congrats, Michelle" for the CD, and in that case, I think this song would have been really good since it would be like, "Oops... I won worlds Again!" I still think it fits (hey, Michelle does break a lot of hearts I'm sure!) and would be a fun addition to our CD, but I'm not sure it would get my vote. Also, if someone else skated to this as mentioned above, then I definitely wouldn't want us to use it.
So, based on all the suggestions so far, I think my top two choices at this point would be "Only Time" or "Oh, Pretty Woman."

I like how you breaked it down Jenny. I completely agree with your two choices that you boiled it down. I'm not a fan of Whitney, so I don't really like One Moment in Time.
As much as I love pop-to-dance songs, Oops I did it again doesn't seem to fit as well.
So my two votes go for Oh Pretty Woman and Only Time by Enya as well. However, I'm leaning towards only Time since it's more recent...and I don't know, there's just something about that song that just touches me.

Jenny, I think Ode to Joy will fit nicely with the rest of the mix, baesides it is nice to have a piece of classical music in there.
The only draw back with Ode is that didnt Ozawa conducted that for olys 98 in Nagano? If that has already been played in 98 olys, I don't think it should be included in this cd.

I am not sure if the right one is on the list yet. ITA that One Moment In Time is a really good one but a bit too obvious. And my thoughts on "Oh Pretty Woman" is that 99% of the time it's known as "Pretty Woman" which is a P song. :) I don't know the other songs but maybe the Enya one would be good? The words to Only Time are very pretty. Ode To Joy is my first choice, but only if it wasn't a part of the 98 Olympics.
I will have a hissy if Britney Spears ends up on this CD. :lol

Obviously I'm biased since I suggested "Ode to Joy" :D but I agree I would only want it used if it wasn't associated with the 1998 Olympics. Who can check for us?
My second choice would be either of the Enya songs - I love her and her music sound ethereal to me, so I think it would be appropriate for Michelle.
I'm 100% behind Amethyst re: Britney Spears. :b

I think the Oops... I Did It Again! would be a fun choice to add to the CD. It might give Michelle a laugh.
The Enya song is nice too. What about "Over the Rainbow" from Wizard of Oz with the Olympics ahead?
"Somewhere Over the Rainbow
Way Up High
There's a Land That I Heard of
Once In a Lullabye
Somewhere Over the Rainbow
Skies Are Blue
And the Dreams That You Dare to Dream
Really Do Come True
Someday I'll Wish Upon A Star
And Wake Up Where the Clouds Are Far
Behind Me
Where Troubles Melt Like Lemon Drops
Away Above the Chimney Tops
That's Where You'll Find Me
Somewhere Over the Rainbow
Bluebirds Fly
Birds Fly Over the Rainbow
Why, Then, Oh Why Can't I?
If Happy Little Bluebirds Fly
Beyond the Rainbow
Why, Oh, Why, Can't I?"
Aria
April 5th, 2001, 02:18 AM
I think the Roy Orbison song is usually listed on albums, etc. as "Pretty Woman"
Also I vote thumbs down to Britney's "Oops...". It has a catchy melody, but the lyrics and story it tells are awful. Isn't it about a girl who delights in deviously seducing, useing, and then dumping men? Mmmm..., maybe someone got the wrong meaning from Miracleous Mandarin. The girl in Oops sounds more like Carmen!
Anyway, I loved all the other suggestions. They are all long time favorites of mine, so I'm going to have a hard time deciding which one to vote for!

I strongly suggest that you use Only Time by Enya. It is so fluid and melodic. I think it is my favorite new song at the moment. I love it!

OK, I looked it up and Yes, "Ode to Joy" was performed at the opening ceremonies in Nagano. Here is a link about it:
www.shinmai.co.jp/oly-eng...2/0001.htm (http://www.shinmai.co.jp/oly-eng/199802/0001.htm)
I couldn't find lyrics or auido for "One million reasons" but I did look up "Oh how the years go by" and I'm not sure if it fits as well as some of our other choices. Here's a link to the lyrics:
members.nbci.com/intelemp...htygb.html (http://members.nbci.com/intelemp/albums/hol/ohtygb.html)
SkateFan007 -- I thought Over The Rainbow would be great too (I had posted it in the original "idea" thread) but then I remembered that Rudy Galindo skated to it. I know no skater "owns" a song once they've skated to it, but with so many songs out there, I think it's best to avoid songs associated with another skater if we can.
Now I want to vote for Britney's song just to see people have a hissy fit about it!! LOL, just kidding... I really like Britney (maybe because I currently live in her home state?) and think it's a fun song, but like I said earlier, I don't think it would be my top choice of everything suggested so far.
The title of Roy Orbison's song <!--EZCODE ITALIC START--> is<!--EZCODE ITALIC END--> "Oh, Pretty Woman," so if you've seen it elsewhere as just "Pretty Woman," then that was incorrect.
So now I need to figure out which songs are our top choices. I think "Only Time," "Oh Pretty Woman," and "One Moment In Time" are the front runners at the moment. "Ode to Joy" was also up there, but I don't know if I should include it anymore now that we know it was definitely played in '98. What do you all think? We can have up to 5 songs in the official "O" poll, but if we only use those 3, that would be fine too (might be better actually to narrow it down to just 3 or 4).
NancyNC
April 5th, 2001, 03:15 PM
Since Ode to Joy was at the Olympics, then perhaps we should stay away from it.
In that case, "Only Time" is definitely my favorite of the other songs listed. I have been an Enya fan for years and this is just a beautiful song.

I think "One Moment in Time" would be a perfect choice for Michelle. (P.S. Sorry about my post about this song on the main topic about her CD, I didn't realize there was a specific topic about the O songs) I think the lyrics suit her quest for the gold perfectly.
Each day I live, I want to be
A day to give the best of me
I'm only one but not alone
My finest day is yet unknown
I want one moment in time
When I'm more than I thought I could be
When all of my dreams are a heartbeat away
And the answers are all up to me
Give me one moment in time
when I'm racing with destiny
then in that one moment in time
I will feel, I will feel eternity
Personally, this song reminds me a whole lot of Michelle's Undaunted Courage.

How about a Golden Oldie by the Platters--Only You.
Only you can make this world seem right
only you can make the dark-ness bright.
Only you and you alone, can thrill me like you do
and fill my heart with love for only you.
Only you can make this change in me
for it's true you are my destiny
When you hold my hand,
I understand
the magic that you do
You're my dream come true, my one and only you.

I agree that "One Moment in Time" is not a good choice because of the Olympic connection and the "too obvious" thing. I hope we end up using songs that Michelle may not have heard before.
"Only Time" gets my vote. It's one of the most beautiful songs of the year.
I know it's off-topic, but I wish Michelle could find some way to use Enya's "Pilgrim." I think that song fits her perfectly.

I had posted the following on the other thread:
Another vote for "One Moment in Time" by Whitney Houston for the "O"!! I think that song is a perfect one to be on the CD for Michelle, and it is definitely inspirational just to listen to it. Thanks for posting the lyrics earlier.
I guess it seems obvious b/c it was an Olympic song one year, but it hasn't been played at any Winter Olympics and hasn't really been heard for a long time anyways. (wasn't it way back at the summer 1992 or 1996 Olympics??)

I don't think you can eliminate a piece of music simply because of how it may have been used in history. Does anyone know if MK attended the opening ceremonies in '98? If not, "Ode to Joy" may not even be associated by her with the Olympics.
Even if she did, she may not recall it. Even if she does, she is not as delicate as you may think. She is a strong woman and could be inspired by "Ode to Joy."
If you were ever unfortunate enough to see the movie "A Clockwork Orange", you saw Malcolm McDowell as a young thug who loved to commit rape, murder, and mayhem to the strains of his favorite music, Beethoven's 9th. Seeing that movie was enough to spoil Beethoven's music for ten years. Nevertheless, one cannot allow Kubrick's misuse of great music to spoil one's enjoyment of perhaps the greatest symphony ever.
In any event, I can now listen to the 9th Symphony without having dreams of Malcolm dancing through my head.

Didn't Paul Wylie skate to "One Moment in Time" after he won the Oly silver? Then, I think, Todd skated to it also after he won his World title. It may not have been Whitney's version, but I'm fairly sure they both skated to it.
I vote for "Only You." Of course it's a song from my era that I remember fondly. I could also vote for "Ode to Joy." So what if it was played at '98 Olys -- look at all Michelle accomplished with her wonderful, mature attitude over winning the silver!
Aria
April 11th, 2001, 05:36 AM
You're thinking of "This is the Moment". It's always sung by a man (originally sung by the character Jekyll/ Hyde), and I don't think it was ever on an Olympic Album. Both Paul and Todd have skated to it.
"One Moment in Time" was a hit for Whitney Houston, and I don't think anyone else has recorded it. It was originally released on the '88 Summer Olympics album (which I still have on vinyl, :lol ). I think this album is out of print, but the song is now available on her Greatest Hits album. I have to wonder if Michelle would even remember this song-- she would have been only 8! Also, I don't recall anyone who's ever skated to it (or I have forgotten!)
"Ode to Joy" has been performed at several Olympic Opening Ceremonies, not just in '98. I think it even may have been performed at every single one, sort of like The Olympic Anthem.

"Overjoyed" is such a beautiful, classic song that would be wonderful to include -- although it may be too specifically romantic??
Here are the N'Sync-version lyrics:
Over time, I've been building my castle of love, oh just for two
Though you never knew you were my reason
I've gone much to far for you now to say,
That I've got to throw my castle away
Over dreams
Over dreams
I have picked out a perfect come true
Though you never knew it was of you I've been dreaming
The sandman has come, from too far away
For you to say come back some other day
And though you don't believe that they do
They do come true
For did my dreams
Come true when I looked at you
And maybe took if you would believe
You too might be
Overjoyed, over loved, over me
Overjoyed, over loved, over me
And though the odds say improbable
What do they know
For in romance
All true love needs is a chance
And maybe with a chance you will find
You too like I
Overjoyed, over loved, over you
Overjoyed, over loved, over me

I kind of like "Only You", but I think I'd be careful of using more than one or two "golden oldies". (My husband likes the oldies radio station, and I do too, for the first hour or so, but then all the songs start to sound too much alike and it gets on my nerves!) But I think the lyrics are appropriate and it could be a good choice to round out the mix.
By the way, I understand there will be a vote for the songs for each letter, but I think the combination of songs chosen by those separate polls might not be the best overall combination for the CD. Anybody else think this?
I know the best homemade compliation CD's (or tapes, if you're talking about when I was young!) I've ever heard are not those that just have the best songs on them, but rather have the best *mix* of songs. I wonder if it might be a good idea to use the voting as a guideline rather than the final word as to which songs end up on the CD?

I had been thinking about "Only You" but couldn't remember all of the lyrics. Thanks, michellesmom, for posting them! Anyway, I think it's a great song with appropriate lyrics, though I agree with rda that we probably shouldn't include too many oldies.

Oh, I know we haven't started discussing songs for other letters yet, but before I forget, I thought I'd suggest something for "D". I was just watching this Japanese music show (satellite TV), and they were singing "Dancing Queen" by ABBA. I think it's a classic, and since Michelle is a skating queen, the song is kinda appropriate. Just a thought...
