I think the next letter that we should work on is "U" because not only is it the first letter of our phrase, but there are three of them, so we need three great songs that start with "U" for our album!

As has already been suggested, I think without a doubt, one of the "U" songs should be "Unforgettable."

I'll post the info for that song below. Then, everyone contribute your suggestions for other songs that start with "U" (with lyrics/audio if possible).

"Unforgettable"

by Nat King Cole

Audio clip from Barnes&Noble (http://music.barnesandnoble.com/scripts/bnmusic.exe?/x/~bb-600005/0165850_0101_00_0002.ra)

Midi (http://midimachine.ptbcanadian.com/midifiles/unforget.mid)

Lyrics:

Unforgettable
That's what you are,
Unforgettable
Tho' near or far.
Like a song of love that clings to me,
How the thought of you does things to me.
Never before
Has someone been more...

Unforgettable
In every way,
And forever more
That's how you'll stay.
That's why, darling, it's incredible
That someone so unforgettable
Thinks that I am
Unforgettable, too.

~interlude~

Unforgettable
In every way,
And forever more
That's how you'll stay.
That's why, darling, it's incredible
That someone so unforgettable
Thinks that I am
Unforgettable, too.

Alright, I don't know if you guys will like this song, because it's Ani DiFranco, and I know a lot of people don't like her, but this is such a wonderful song, it's called "Up up up up up up"

up up up up up up points the
spire of the steeple
but god's work isn't done by god
it's done by people

up up up up up up points the
fingers of the trees
and the lumberjacks with their bloody axes
are on their knees

just when you think that you've got enough
enough grows
and everywhere that you go in life
enough knows

up up up up up up dances
the steam from the sewer
as she rounds the corner
the brutal wind blows right through her

up up up up up up raises
the stakes of the game
each day sinks its boot print into her clay
and she's not the same

just when you think that you've got enough
enough grows
and everywhere that you go in life
enough knows

half of learning how to play
is learning what not to play
she's learning the spaces she leaves
have their own things to say and
she's trying to sing just enough
so that the air around her moves
and make music like mercy
that gives what it it is
and has nothing to prove

she crawls out on a limb
and begins to build her home
and it's enough just to look around
and know that she's not alone

up up up up up up points the
spire of the steeple
but god's work isn't done by god
it's done by people

I know some of the lines aren't quite as appropriate as others, but I really like the "enough" parts, and "nothing to prove", and the "knowing she's not alone" parts. I'm just going through all my CDs, trying to find words that begin with 'U' or 'O', and I came upon this one, and realized, wow, this one really does make sense... The music that begins in the "half of learning what to play" stanza somehow always brings me to tears... That's actually the part that RealPlayer gives you...Windows Media gives you another part.. Sorry, I don't know how to find the whole song! But here is the link to CDNow: www.cdnow.com/cgi-bin/mse...mid=631085 (http://www.cdnow.com/cgi-bin/mserver/SID=670549717/pagename=/RP/CDN/FIND/album.html/artistid=DIFRANCO*ANI/itemid=631085)

"Under the Sea" :)

I'm just kidding, but geez, it's hard to think of songs that start with "u"!

How about "Under My Skin" by Sinatra? I'm not really a fan, but it's so darn hard to think of "u"s.....

I think it's so hard to find any "U" songs, I looked through my entire playlist, and I don't think it's really appropriate, but it is a nice and pretty song. It's Jessica Andrews' Unbreakable Heart:

You can find audio files on this page:
cdnow.com/cgi-bin/mserver...mid=648494 (http://cdnow.com/cgi-bin/mserver/SID=853419267/pagename=/RP/CDN/FIND/album.html/artistid=ANDREWS*JESSICA/itemid=648494)

And here are the lyrics:

An empty house, a broken fairy tale
A hollow girl with emty arms
From an angel's tears God made the stars
Why can't he make me an unbreakable heart

In my blue world, you shone like heaven's fire
And left me cryin' in the dark
How could anyone be so hard
Did you think I had an unbreakable heart

I suppose I should know
Sometimes love just comes and goes
But I believed, foolish me
We'd go on and on

One day, someone will come to you
And rock you tightly in her arms
Please remember this, when you drop your guard
Nobody has an unbreakable heart

From an angel's wings to a fallen star
God makes everything but unbreakable hearts

I just started putting random things in Napster and downloading them. Does anyone like Techno? I like the words to this one dance mix song by Kim English called "Unspeakable Joy" from her Re-Energized Vol 1 cd. I'm not sure if it'd be appropriate on the cd, but hey, it'd be a great variety right? :)

I can't seem to find the lyrics, but here's where you can find clips on Cdnow:
cdnow.com/cgi-bin/mserver...id=1206797 (http://cdnow.com/cgi-bin/mserver/SID=853419267/pagename=/RP/CDN/FIND/album.html/artistid=ENGLISH*KIM/itemid=1206797)

Um...I give up. LOL....I can't find any U songs!

This is a tough one... and there are 3 "U"s in "Undaunted Courage" too.

Jenny

LOL, Grace -- I've been searching for "U" songs on Napster too. The only other U songs in my collection (beside "Unforgettable") are The Righteous Brothers' "Unchained Melody" which is too much of a romantic love song and EMF's "Unbelievable" which is a great song but wouldn't really fit Michelle at all. Then I also thought of "Under Pressure" by Queen/David Bowie, but I wasn't sure if that was really appropriate either.

So, here are the two songs that I came up with that I think might work better:

<!--EZCODE BOLD START--> "Under The Rainbow"<!--EZCODE BOLD END--> by Trisha Yearwood

It's a really pretty song, and I think it's a nice message about how sometimes the real "gold" is under the rainbow and not over it or at the end of it.

Clip from CDNow (http://www.cdnow.com/cgi-bin/mserver/SID=1029883260/pagename=/RP/CDN/FIND/album.html/ArtistID=YEARWOOD*TRISHA/ITEMID=372845)

lyrics:

Evening, porch swing, we love to watch it rain
To some folks, it ain't much, but we think we've got it made
Some people dream about streets paved with gold
Only to find a yellow brick road
We know the way that story goes

Here under the rainbow
People pass us by
We laugh at the way they laugh at you and I
The world is spinning around and around
Everybody's lookin' for higher ground
But here under the rainbow
Dreams fall from the sky
From the sky

We've got an old car with spare parts and a broken radio
So many back seat memories we just can't let it go
Sometimes we like to take it out
Give the neighbors somethin' to talk about
Movin' as slow as the law allows

Here under the rainbow
People pass us by
We laugh at the way they laugh at you and I
The world is spinning around and around
Everybody's lookin' for higher ground
But here under the rainbow
Dreams fall from the sky
From the sky

Some people dream about streets paved with gold
Only to find a yellow brick road
We know the way that story goes

Here under the rainbow
People pass us by
We laugh at the way they laugh at you and I
The world is spinning around and around
Everybody's lookin' for higher ground
But here under the rainbow
Dreams fall from the sky
From the sky

<!--EZCODE BOLD START--> "Up On The Roof"<!--EZCODE BOLD END--> by The Drifters

I like the message of this song a lot too since Michelle certainly deserves to take a break from all the hustle and bustle every once in a while! The "oldie" version is great, but there is also a version by James Taylor which is very nice as well. Here are audio clips of both....

The Drifters clip from Barnes&Noble (http://music.barnesandnoble.com/scripts/bnmusic.exe?/x/~hh-600005/0018037_0205_00_0002.ra)

James Taylor clip from Barnes&Noble (http://music.barnesandnoble.com/scripts/bnmusic.exe?/x/~kkk-600005/0272598_0104_00_0002.ra)

Lyrics:

When this old world starts getting me down
And people are just too much for me to face
I climb way up to the top of the stairs
And all my cares just drift right into space
On the roof it's peaceful as can be
And there the world below can't bother me
Let me tell you now

When I come home feelin' tired and beat
I go up where the air is fresh and sweet (up on the roof)
I get away from the hustling crowd
And all that rat-race noise down in the street (up on the roof)
On the roof, the only place I know
Where you just have to wish to make it so
Let's go up on the roof (up on the roof)

At night the stars put on a show for free
And darlin', you can share it all with me
I keep a-tellin' you

Right smack dab in the middle of town
I've found a paradise that's trouble-proof (up on the roof)
And if this world starts getting you down
There's room enough for two
Up on the roof (up on the roof)
Up on the roo-oo-oof (up on the roof)
Oh come on baby (up on the roof)
Oh come on honey (up on the roof)
Everything is all right (up on the roof)

I just listened to some of the songs suggested so far...

First, I think "Under My Skin" is actually titled "I've Got You Under My Skin" so I don't think we can use that one.

The Ani DiFranco song was.... different. I did like it better in the latter part of the song when the music started in, but overall it didn't really click with me personally. But don't worry, if that's what everyone votes for, then so be it! :D

Based on the lyrics, "Unbreakable Heart" doesn't really fit Michelle thematically, but I actually liked "Unspeakable Joy" a lot! I'm not really a huge techno fan, but I thought it was a cool song, and the title of that song alone definitely fits Michelle!

I'm not familiar with most of these songs, but I love Unforgettable and vote for it for one of the "U"s.

Hazy-
It's <!--EZCODE ITALIC START--> "I've Got You Under My Skin"<!--EZCODE ITALIC END--> written by Cole Porter, and it's been recorded by hundreds of artists. Sinatra's version is probably the most famous.

Wow, finding "U" songs is going to be hard! If we get desperate, we may have to try some Italian songs. I can think of two Italian arias right off that begin with <!--EZCODE ITALIC START--> "Una"<!--EZCODE ITALIC END-->- <!--EZCODE ITALIC START--> "Una Voce Poco Fa"<!--EZCODE ITALIC END--> and <!--EZCODE ITALIC START--> "Una Donna A Quindici Anni"<!--EZCODE ITALIC END-->. And then there's <!--EZCODE ITALIC START--> "Un Bel Di"<!--EZCODE ITALIC END-->. But, I'm not sure these would work.

Aria

How could I forget this title-- I sang this last summer! The melody is very pretty. The lyrics are meant to be romantic as are the ones to <!--EZCODE ITALIC START--> "Unforgettable"<!--EZCODE ITALIC END-->, but I think maybe they could apply to Michelle.

This was originally sung by Bernadette Peters in <!--EZCODE BOLD START--> Song and Dance<!--EZCODE BOLD END-->, but my favorite recording is by Sarah Brightman, ALW's ex.

Another musical theatre song, <!--EZCODE ITALIC START--> "Unusual Way"<!--EZCODE ITALIC END--> from <!--EZCODE BOLD START--> Nine<!--EZCODE BOLD END-->. I first thought it was too romantic, but the more I look at the lyrics in my songbook, it might work.

Also, how about <!--EZCODE ITALIC START--> "Up, Up, and Away"<!--EZCODE ITALIC END-->? It does talk about flying, and Michelle flys when she skates. And she floats like a "beautiful balloon".

<!--EZCODE ITALIC START--> "Up Where We Belong"<!--EZCODE ITALIC END-->. A big song from the 80s. Soul stirring melody, but I can't remember all the lyrics. Michelle does lift us up! Another 80s gem- Billy Joel's <!--EZCODE ITALIC START--> "Uptown Girl"<!--EZCODE ITALIC END-->.

I found a listing for a Stevie Wonder song called <!--EZCODE ITALIC START--> "Uptight (Everything's Alright)"<!--EZCODE ITALIC END-->. Is anyone famaliar with this one?

I will try to find links to these, but I don't know when I can't get them all done. So if others would like to research these put as well, that would be helpful. To summarize, here's the songs I mentioned:

1.<!--EZCODE ITALIC START--> "Unexpected Song"<!--EZCODE ITALIC END--> (Sarah Brightman)
2.<!--EZCODE ITALIC START--> "Unusual Way"<!--EZCODE ITALIC END--> (Original Broadway Cast?)
3.<!--EZCODE ITALIC START--> "Up, Up, and Away"<!--EZCODE ITALIC END--> (Fifth Dimension)
4.<!--EZCODE ITALIC START--> "Uptown Girl"<!--EZCODE ITALIC END--> (Billy Joel)
5.<!--EZCODE ITALIC START--> "Uptight(Everything's Alright)"<!--EZCODE ITALIC END--> (Stevie Wonder)

I tried transcribing the lyrics from my mp3, so I'm sure I missed some things. Personally, I LOVE these lyrics, and I guess I'm a techno fan, but I love the song! makes me want to "break out into dance! :) "

Unspeakable Joy by Kim English

*chanting*

Chorus:
Joy, Unspeakable Joy
Cuz they did not give it
They can not take it away
Joy, Unspeakable Joy
Cuz they did not give it
they can not take it away

When I (repeated over and over)

When I wake up in the morning
Gets me out of bed
Keeps me running, skipping jumping
Like a little kid
You know sometimes I can hardly keep it inside
It overtakes me, overwhelms me and I'm more alive
I did not get it from, any one man, (<--not sure about this line)
and it's okay if they
don't always understand
it's very easy to
get caught in circumstance
it's even easier
to break out into dance

Repeat Chorus

People ask me why, the supernatural high
seeing only sun when there's a cloudy sky
I know that trouble tries to surrounds me
but I'm giving something greater deep inside me
I did not get it wrong, any one ol man (<--I have no idea what she's saying!)
that's okay if they
don't always understand
it's very easy to
get caught in circumstance
it's even easier
to break out into dance

Repeat Chorus (2 times)

Take it away (repeated many times..faded..techno like)

Repeat Chorus - she says something different in one of the stanzas in the chorus, but I cannot pick it up what she's saying.

"Unforgettable"

Jenny
April 9th, 2001, 01:48 PM
OK, since we need three songs that start with "U," I'm going to make an executive decision :lol and say that one of them is definitely going to be "Unforgettable." The only thing to decide as far as that is concerned is which version to use. As much as I like the Nat/Natalie duet version, I think I'd prefer Nat's solo version for this project, so that would probably get my vote. Either would be great though -- please, everyone post which would be your preference and we'll go with the majority decision!

That still leaves 2 "U" songs that we need to pick, so everyone who only posted about wanting "Unforgettable," please come back and say which other "U" songs that you like as well!

HeatherV23

How about "Unchained Melody?" I know it's a "romantic song", but even an orchestral version of the melody is beautiful! The title is really powerful too

(I have a beautiful mp3 of an orchestral version, which I can upload if people want to hear it)

I totally agree with Unforgettable...I'm kind of thinkin' the Nat solo version would be best, because, even though they're father and daughter, it's more of a romantic duet...does that make sense?

As for the other two...um...tough... I definitely think "up up up up up up" should be included...just MHO... Don't know about the other one though.

Unforgettable is perfect, and I like the Nat/Natalie version cuz I love the father-daughter thing.

I listened to Unspeakable Joy and I like it! It would make a nice addition cuz I think it would help the whole thing from getting too sappy, you know?

I also vote for Up on the Roof - the James Taylor version. Maybe it's just my age, but it takes me back, and it always makes me feel happy, and I think the lyrics are suitable.
