View Full Version : MK CD Project: Which Phrase should we use?
Jenny
March 27th, 2001, 06:21 PM
This is the first poll for the MK Compilation CD Project.
Here is the initial thread explaining the idea: Idea for a special gift in honor of Michelle (http://pub1.ezboard.com/fmichellekwanforumletscongratulatemichelle.showMes sage?topicID=74.topic)
The first thing we need to decide is which phrase we want to use for the CD. The phrase is important because it will be the title of the CD itself, and it will also guide us in selecting the songs for the album.
Here is an example: Kelly's Bridal Shower CD (http://www.mscnet.com/jenny/mkf/cd.jpg)
With that in mind, please pick your favorite phrase from the choices below:
Edit -- I changed two of the choices below before any votes were cast for them... read the posts below for the explanation (if you can manage to decipher our insanity).

I like the first one best since it really encompases all we want to say on the CD. Undaunted Courage is wonderful too, but then the songs would seem to have to be "courageous"?
Jenny
March 27th, 2001, 08:35 PM
Sharon -- I dont' think the songs would have to be "courageous" if we used "Undaunted Courage" as the title of the CD/order of the songs.
Also, everyone should keep in mind that we can still say "To Michelle, Love MKF" on the cover of the CD even if we choose something else for the main title. Or we can even write "A Tribute Album in Honor of Michelle Kwan... Love, MKF" or "made with love by MKF" or something like that.
Here's an example:
Undaunted Courage~A Tribute to Michelle Kwan~Made with love by MKF
And then the back of the CD would vertically spell out "Undaunted Courage" with the first letter of all the song titles.

A few of us were discussing the choices, and we think we came up with better ones than messages which we will be putting on the CD cover, anyway (such as congrats Michelle.)
Ouch, Jenny, stop twisting my arm. LOL, just kidding...will probably edit out after Jenny reads. ;)

Heather and I forced Jenny to change "We Love You Michelle" and "Congrats Michelle" to "Always a Champion" and "A Legend in Our Hearts". ..
At the moment though, Jenny is forcing us to write this post. Everything you read is scripted.
And I'm in a very silly mood, so everything you have just read above is false.
However, Heather and I did think that the two new topics are a little bit more suitable than the old topics.
The above is true. ;-)

Heather and Grace are both crazy. Mean and crazy.
(But they did come up with better suggestions for the CD, which is why I changed a couple choices in the poll.)

Oh, so now we're mean now are we Jenny? Are we going to put up with this Heather? I don't think so....
*runs after Jenny....*evil laugh*...*
I still haven't voted yet. *sigh* don't know what to pick!
Heather
March 27th, 2001, 09:48 PM
mean and crazy? Take out the mean, but then you are OK. ;)
LOL, sorry guys, we're all really giddy/silly for some reason today. Just ignore us...

Definitely "Undaunted Courage". I think this phrase is so inspiring, especially with the Olympics coming up and all! :) :)
Jenny, even if it doesn't win, use Undaunted Courage anyway lol! :lol

I was leaning towards "To Michelle, Love MKF" until I saw your example of how a cover would be - now I really like the Undaunted Courage, with the part about who the CD was from...plus there's one less letter, so we might run less risk of having too many songs? Unless of course we go to more than one CD...

Undaunted Courage all the way.
My choices of songs are:
East of Eden (I know you don't want songs she's skated to)But what would a compilation for Michelle be without East of Eden. I like the version by the Denver Gay Men's Chorus
or from Jekyll and Hyde: This Is The Moment by Colm Wilkerson (I think that's not his last name. I'll have to check if you need it)

For some reason, I get "rejected" every time I try to hit a button to vote on our message line to Michelle.
So, I'll just vote here in text, for the "Undaunted Courage" choice. I think that's the most unique and well-phrased option (and best sums up my thoughts of her and her strength!)

I also like Undaunted Courage, because it matches the banner that angelofmine made for Worlds. Michelle saw the banner and signed it!

For some reason, the vote button is not working for me so I'll just vote here:
I vote for: UNDAUNTED COURAGE
I like the idea of carrying the same "theme" from banner to CD.

The vote button may not work because you are not logged in. At the top of the screen of MKF click on my control center and log in, otherwise you can't vote. :p

Well, I voted for Undaunted Courage, even though I have the perfect song for the W in Kwan--"We are the Champions" by Queen. I know they've used it for COI, but I don't care!

It looks like "Undaunted Courage" is the frontrunner, with only 23 people voting so far. How long do you think I should keep this poll open? I'd love to wait so more people from MKF will be able to have input in the project, but we'll also need to close the poll at some point so we can get started figuring out all the songs... I guess, tell as many other forumites as you can to come vote ASAP, lol!

I kind of like a legend in our hearts...:)

Thanks BluePassion...
I like A Legend In Our Hearts, too. :) Or at least some variation...
*cough* please vote for that *cough*
But I guess as co-administrator, I can't possibly throw my weight around...

LOL Heather.
Man. I'm one sad puppy. I really can't decide. Hehe...I think I'll let all you wondeful decisive people decide and let me, the indecisive Grace sit back and see the drama unfold.
I'll just contribute to what songs are going to be on there. *s*

I was just wondering... can someone explain the whole history of the "Undaunted Courage" phrase? I know it's something that Frank said to Michelle at some competition (or something like that?), but I'm not sure of the source of this info or how it became so well known. Hopefully someone can share the story with the rest of us. :)

It was at the '98 world pros -
When Michelle was at the barrier getting ready to go out and skate the interpretive free...the now legendary performance of East of Eden...Frank Carroll said "Undaunted Courage" to Michelle, and it was clear that it was some sort of little joke between them. Perhaps it stemmed from a pep talk that he had given her previously? Michelle had been heading away from the barrier, and skating back around to Frank to have a little laugh with him as he repeated it laughing. Al Trautwig said "Undaunted Courage...this is like Winston Churchill meets Knute Rockne"...and of course, we all know the kind of performance she went to skate.
It's included on Cherie's tape.

With Grace's permission (since it used to be the name of her website) I just added "Poise and Beauty on Ice" as a new choice for our phrase. :)

Heather I am sorry but I voted for "Undaunted Courage" But I still like your idea Heather. Phew got myself out of some hot water ;) :lol

Thanks AYS -- somehow, I didn't even see that you had replied to that when I posted about the new phrase!
Now I understand why it was chosen for the Worlds banner, though I really wonder what the joke is between her and Frank. I hope we're not "stealing" something that's special just between the two of them by using it on the CD.
Overall, I think all of the phrases would be good, no matter which one we use. :)

jenny-
The relationship between Frank and MK seems so special...their interaction was amazing after her lp at this worlds...it may well have been something that came up in conversation between them; but, clearly, it represents something important that he wants her to show everyone when she goes out and competes...and something that we all want her to have in this year leading up to the Olympics. That's why I think it's a good choice.
Jenny

AYS - I agree with you about Frank & Michelle's relationship, and I totally understand why that phrase works and why so many people have chosen it. I was just saying that since it's something personal between them, I hope it's OK with them that we're borrowing it for this special gift! (I said "stealing" before, but "borrowing"is more appropriate I think. :) )

I just voted for Undaunted Courage. I like that it is not only how WE see her, but what Frank wants for her too. And what she needs in the upcoming season is to skate with Undaunted Courage.
I like that. I am gettin' all misty-eyed over here. :lol

i voted for "a legend in our hearts" because she wanted to be a legend. :)

I do like something to do with her being a legend...I also something with poise, beauty, confidence, etc. The undaunted courage one is ok, but I'd like to see something different since that was on angelofmine's banner. Wow, this is a tough decision. But, I do really like the idea of the CD, and I agree jen, I think she'll enjoy the thought no matter what we pick. :)
BTW, it doesn't bother me one bit if the co-administrators of this great board have a little more pull on what the title should be. :)

diana-I also like the poise and beauty one. I'm not really in love with any of them (though I guess the songs are more important, anyway), but I'm just not enamoured by the Undaunted Courage one. Apparently, I'm one of the few...
LOL, and my "influence" hasn't really worked...I think 2 more people have voted for my choice since I said anything. ;)

vote for "A Legend in our Hearts". All the titles are great but I think this says it all!

April 3rd, 2001, 03:21 PM
is titled "The Best," so it's a "T" song. It starts with "You're simply the best. Better than all the rest.
Better than anyone, anyone I ever met...."
I vote for it and Undaunted Courage.
What a great idea this project is!

I voted for "A Legend In Our Hearts" because that's how Michelle would like to be remembered someday- A legend in figure skating. I consider her a legend already even though she'll hopefully be around for many, many more years for her fans to enjoy even more of her grace and artistry on the ice! I guess any of the choices will be fine because they all describe how we feel about her.
Aria

...is actually called "Simply the Best". So you'd need a "S' to use that song.
Jenny
April 5th, 2001, 01:20 PM
Well, I'm going to close the poll and officially declare that "UNDAUNTED COURAGE" is the winner!
Thanks everyone for voting!!
(BTW, I believe Tina Turner's album is titles "Simply The best" but the song in question is just "The Best" -- hope that clears that up!)
