I sent our messages to Proper Marketing today (via fedex) so hopefully I will hear that they received them tomorrow! I made a title page with the MK Forum banner and a brief note explaining who we are and where to find us on the web. I printed all the messages in color, and they came out really nice (41 pages!). Then I bound everything together in a folder that I covered with pretty, old-fashioned wrapping paper which I three-hole-punched and tied with strings. I wrote "To Michelle Kwan" "Love (heart) MKF" on the front cover. I didn't have a lot of materials to work with, but I think it came out well. Hopefully Michelle will like it!!
I also included a letter in the fedex box addressed to the woman I've been talking to in Shep's office. I explained what we want to do regarding the flowers on her birthday, so hopefully she will get back to me about that. I will keep you all posted!!
Now, Phase 2 of our project is going to be the earrings. I've skimmed through the other thread, and here is what I have come up with:
Ruby studs vs. plain gold studs
--I think either would be lovely (and I'm sure Michelle will love whichever one we get her), but I think the rubies wins out. More people want rubies, red is great on her, it's her birthstone, we do have enough money (over $400 pledged), they're a little more special than plain studs.... Yes, plain studs are a bit more versatile, but I personally think simple ruby studs can be worn with just about anything, and even if not, then she'll be sure to save them for special occassions! In any case, majority rules, so rubies it is.
Simple vs. elaborate
--Definitely simple. As many others have pointed out, big & flashy is not Michelle's style. I'm thinking simple round ruby studs; no diamonds or other embellishments. Again, that's what the majority wants also.
Quality vs. Quantity (Size)
--I would definitely choose smaller, higher quality rubies over larger, less spectacular ones. Seems like most of you feel that way too.
Gold vs. Platinum
--I love platinum, but in this case, I think gold is the way to go (preferrably 18-24K). For one thing, I think rubies look really nice set in gold, and also, the gold can be in honor of her gold medal at Worlds. I'm not sure how the majority feels about this one... opinions?
Online vs. In Person
--I'm not against ordering things online, but for something like this, I think I'd want to see the jewelry in person. That way, we'll know exactly what we're getting. My mom knows two jewelers in Los Angeles that she trusts (one nearby, one downtown), so I am going to follow her guidance and (hopefully) find something wonderful when I'm in Los Angeles in May.
Hmmm... I think those were all of the issues that were brought up in the other thread. For those who inquired about how to donate for the gift, just email me at jenny@mscnet.com and I will reply with the address. Be sure to include your forum username and the amount you are going to pledge!!
