I've been speaking with a very nice lady at Proper Marketing (Shep Goldberg's office) about how we can get our gift to Michelle. The idea was to send the flowers via Shep's office because that would ensure Michelle's privacy on tour (since her hotel information cannot -- and should not! -- be given out to anyone for any reason). Anyway, they think our idea is really sweet, and sending the messages is no problem, but in the latest message I received today, they suggested that the flowers might not be a good idea. As some people here have also stated, they feel it would be a waste of money since Michelle is on the road and won't be able to take them with her. I personally never thought it would be a waste since Michelle would get to enjoy them for one evening, but considering that everyone wants the arrangement to be really HUGE, it does seem a bit extravagant to get her such an expensive bouquet.
Anyway, we can still do the flowers if that's what everybody wants to do, but I decided to look into some other options of what we could get her. I decided to try to find a care package that would be good, and I actually found something that might be perfect for her! There's a company called Take Care, and this is what they're all about:
"Take Care, Inc.is the vision of three business women. Three women who travel for business and wanted to focus on the needs of all women... to address how to take care of the body, mind and spirit... Especially while working away from home."
I thought that sounded perfect for Michelle since it would be neat to get her something to take care of her "body, mind and spirit" while on the grueling COI tour.
Check out their website: Take Care Packs.
The basic pack comes with a 7" Take Care bear ("the softest, cuddliest, sweetest teddy bear you've ever laid eyes on"), buckwheat neck roll with travel cover, unscented flax seed silk eye pillow, lavender votive with carry bag, soothing bath salts ("infused with rose petal"s), foot treatment rub, relaxation CD, and luxury travel bag. The Traveler pack has a 5" bear and adds a flashlight, first aid kit, pocket utility knife, night light, travel mirror. The Deluxe pack comes with all that plus lip balm and a night shirt. Any of the three packs can also be gift wrapped.
What sold it for me was the foot treatment rub -- perfect for a skater!!
Anyway, I just thought I'd throw that idea out there since this way Michelle would have a fun gift that would be useful. Something she could take with her.... and this way she'll have a little bit of MKF with her for the whole tour! I do still love flowers so we could actually do one of these care packages plus a SMALL bouquet to go with it... I think we have enough money for that, although sending the extra money to charity is also nice.
So, please let me know what you want to do! Post your comments here, and we'll do whatever the majority of people want. Here are the options to choose from:
(A) Stick with the original idea & just get the big bouquet
(B) Get a care package
(C) Get a care package and a small bouquet
Our messages will still be sent no matter which option we choose, and all leftover money will still go to charity (though option C probably won't have as much left over). I'd like to have our gift sent Friday or Saturday if possible, so please let me know your preference ASAP (be sure to include which of the 3 care packages you like)!

Jenny, would it be possible to print out all the fan letters and bind them into a really nice book. Very beautiful binding and the best paper. Of all the gifts, I think she would treasure the moving words written by the fans on this board. Something she could thumb through when she is feeling down and needs a pick-me-upper. I'm currently looking for book binding services on the web or something like that. Just an idea. You can ignore it if you want.

This is where I got all my links from.
I know they make the books but I don't know if they would type the letters out on to the pages.
and this is a good source to go about book makings and such. This service is expensive ( might not have enough money for flowers) and maybe someone could help surf
the Net for more details.
hee hee.. .tried my best.

Caroline -- I agree that our messages are the most important part of our gift to Michelle, but I don't know if making a special bound book will work for this project since we wanted to get this gift to Michelle rather soon. Something like that would take a bit more time to plan.... perhaps we could just send the plain messages now, and then put them together in a book to be sent later?

I think option C is the best option because then our Shelly can have both the take-care package and some beautiful flowers......

I don't think we could afford to make the book anyway. These artist charge so much for a book! Wish I paid more attention in the bookmaking course I took ( I only know how to make 2 kinds of books - pathetic I know). It's a very time consuming process and the nicer papers are expensive. I'm an senior art major and I have to prepare for my senior art exhibition .. auuugh. If I had more time I'll take this project up ( but maybe I make this a summer project?) Let me sleep on this and do more research. My art professor is into bookmaking too and I could ask for her help.

I vote for the deluxe care package and a small bouquet if it's not a problem to get the flowers to her. Okay, stupid question: How would Michelle get the flowers if they were sent to Michigan?

Could the lady at Sheps office have talked to MK?
I like the basic package , b/c the other 2 are good, but carries
the pocket knife, I just can not picture Mk with a pocket knife.
I still like the idea of some kind of flowers, maybe get her
a very small bouqet.

Thanks, everyone, for your input...
Terri -- Sorry I was unclear. I didn't mean that the flowers would be sent to Michigan! I meant that they would get to her via Shep's office because they would be helping me get them to her... I had thought perhaps they could place the order directly and then I would send them a check or give them my payment info to use in the order. Another option that the lady suggested would be that we could have the gift delivered to Michelle c/o Shep at the COI production offices which they set up in each COI city. They would be able to release that info since it doesn't reveal where Michelle is, and then Shep (or someone) would see that it got to Michelle at her hotel.

Thanks for clearing that up Jenny. I think your gift basket idea is a wonderful idea. I've found that this website is helpful when buying gifts. If you'd like to check it out.

Can I make a possible suggestion for flowers? My sister once sent my Mom some stargazer lillies which are beautiful white lillies with pink freckles on them and have a WONDERFUL fragance to them. They lasted around 2 weeks and smelled wonderful to the end. Here is a photo of some stargazers: www.floristdirect.com/ima...aze-lg.gif (http://www.floristdirect.com/images/stargaze-lg.gif)

Of course we have to get Michelle the deluxe package... only the best for MK!
Skatingfan,
I do agree that it's a little hard to picture Michelle with a pocket knife. But I find it handy for tightening my skate blades if I don't have anything else available. I don't know if elite skaters have this kind of problem with their skates, but every now and then, the blade will loosen on one of my skates while I'm skating. If I don't have a Philips around, I've borrowed a pocket knife in the past, which tightened the blade just fine.

Hey Jenny, I like C also! Here is something that I thought about and you can decide if you want to. What if we had the Shep office give Michelle that stuff on her last night of her tour so that she wouldn't have to carry it from city to city? Or was that your plan all along? Sorry if it is a stupid question. But I do like the idea of a deluxe care package and a small bouquet of flowers.
Jenny

Well, it looks like everyone likes option C.... a care package and a small bouquet of flowers!
I've run into a snag with arranging to get this gift to Michelle via Shep's office.... They said that if we sent it to their office they would forward it to Michelle, but I have a feeling it wouldn't be forwarded until the end of the tour (as Beth mentioned above) since they're probably getting a lot of mail for her right now and they don't want to load her down while she's touring. I understand the idea that Michelle isn't going to want to lug a million things with her all around the country, but I for one would like her to get this gift now as opposed to the end of the tour, and of course, if there's anything in the pack that she doesn't need or want right now, she can always send those things home (which is probably what she does with a lot of the gifts she receives at each tour stop). Another problem with sending our gift through Shep's office in this way is that we wouldn't be able to include flowers with our gift (don't see how that would work). So, I'm back to the drawing board as to how to get this gift to Michelle...
I tried calling the arenas to find out if they would accept deliveries for the skaters, but the people I talked to weren't very helpful. It looks like we're just going to have to have a MKF member bring the gift with them to COI and deliver it to her that way. I was trying to avoid that so she wouldn't have to lug the gift from the arena to the hotel and I liked the idea of her finding the surprise in her room, but I don't see any other option. I wish I knew about this before so we could have saved some time (since several of you have already attended COI), but better late than never, right? ;)
So.... I need a volunteer who is attending COI (preferably somebody who has already contributed a message and/or money to the project!) who would be willing to bring our gift to Michelle at the arena. I would order the care package to be sent to the volunteer, and I would mail the copy of our messages & a check to buy the flowers. Are any of you going to the upcoming shows in E.Rutherford, Hartford, Indianapolis, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, or Detroit? If so, please email me ASAP at jenny@mscnet.com
We will get this gift to Michelle someway, somehow!!!!
