One idea is to match the money it takes to make the medal, and give that money to charity, most likey CMN (because Michelle works with them), in Michelle's name, to be presented at the same time. With all the people involved, there seems like there will be enough for this.

Would you like the medal project to also include the charity donation?

Heather, I LOOOOVE this idea!! I was thinking this whole plan through, and I kept thinking about DianeO's project, and how much Michelle would appreciate a charity donation. I want our medal to mean something to her, but I also don't want her to feel bad that we spent so much money on her when there are people who desperately need it. This way, we can give Michelle a personal token of our gratitude that will be really special, but at the same time, use our group to do something good for humanity in her name!! If we can get the funds, this will be completely off the wall!!!!:eek :eek

I've been thinking along these lines ... when I finalize my thoughts I promise to share them with this forum ...

I think it's a great idea - the money collected for the medal can go to the medal, and then anything left over can go in a lump-sum charity donation to be presented at the same time!

Great idea! How about maybe donating money to the Miracle Children's Network?! I know that Michelle has done some charity for them in the past!

I really like the idea. However, is there any way to set up two pools rather than using "leftovers" for charity. The reason is that the portion to charity should be tax deductible, and that way some of us can donate more money in the aggregate if we knew that our charity portion would be tax deductible. But I understand if that would get too complicated.

This is the best idea yet. It's actually doing something that is important.

This is an AWESOME idea!!! The medal will mean a lot to Michelle, but I'm sure a charity donation will really touch her heart on a deep level, too. Let's do it!!! :) :) :)

How much is the medal going to cost? I think most of the money should go to the charity.

barbnf - I was toying with the idea of a fund also, but don't know how to start it up. Any thoughts yet?

This is definitely the way to go- giving Michelle something but also giving to others who need it, and I'm sure she would be touched. :)

I like this idea!! But I think we should, first, just concentrate on the medal, get it done, and give the $$ left over to the charity...

While I think giving a platinum medal or anything of that sort is a great idea, I think Michelle would be better served by having a donation made to her favorite charity in her name and the Michelle Kwan Forum.

Celebrities such as Michelle, still in essence make quite a bit of money every year through appearances, sponsorhsips, etc. A medal, while beautiful in thought, might come off as extravagant. Making a donation to a charity will in essence accomplish several tasks.

1. Show her that we support her achievements
2. Go to a great cause.
3. Make her and others more aware of this forum as the premier MK fansite.

I think then, the media will think of this as a great story and Michelle may be more apt to accept and "award" such as this from the Forum leaders.

I believe an account can be set up in the forums name and those of us wishing to contribute can direct whatever amount we wish to that specific account. That way, all money is accounted for no matter how much or how little is received.

Just a thought!

Absolutely a chartable donation in Michelle's name would be great. And however we can alert the media about it would be excellent too. I think Michelle would be as touched by this as by anything else we can do for her. Just let me know when to send the check.
