View Full Version : Project Update #2 -- IMPORTANT, please read!

Through further contact with Michelle's management company along with input from other MKF members, I have learned that we will not be able to give our gift package to Michelle at COI. It would not be possible to deliver a large package to Michelle at the arena because it would have to be searched and cleared through her management company, and they have strongly discouraged sending Michelle a large gift at this time (as much as they love the good intentions, they keep reiterating that Michelle is just swamped with stuff right now). I know we wanted Michelle to get a gift from us as soon as possible (so it's closer to her victory at Worlds, etc) but it looks like we're going to have to wait. At this point, she's already well into a week of touring, so perhaps it's for the best to get the care package to her a bit later (after all the hoopla around her has died down a bit), and as people keep saying.... Michelle is going to love our gift no matter when she gets it.
So, I have been brainstorming all day, and I think I've come up with something that will work (if it's OK with everyone). Here is my idea: We split up this project into three parts.
(1) We send Michelle the messages from the forum NOW (either via an MKF member at COI or Shep's office). That's the most meaningful part of our gift, and it will be nice for her to get those as soon as possible since those are the congratulatory notes about Worlds. Also, there isn't a problem with it being too much to carry while on tour. ;-)
(2) We send the care package to Shep's office along with a nice note that Michelle can use the items when travelling to competitions next fall and/or on the next tour. They can deliver it to Michelle whenever they see fit, probably in early June when she gets home from this year's tour.
(3) We send a nice sized bouquet to Michelle for her 20th birthday in July. Since it's well in advance, I was thinking I could send the check to Shep's office and have *them* order the flowers directly to be delivered wherever Michelle will be on her birthday. That way, her privacy won't be invaded, and since she won't be moving around then, she'll be able to appreciate the flowers as long as they last. (I haven't mentioned this idea to her manager yet, so I don't know if they'd be willing to do that for us, but hopefully we could work with them on that).
-OR-
Yet another idea suggested by Jennis via email, would be to get Michelle a much smaller gift that she would be able to receive now, such as earrings. I think this would be lovely (and wouldn't we all just die if Michelle skated wearing earrings from us????), but I'm not sure how the logistics of buying and sending jewelry would work (that makes me a bit nervous). I've already received $111 so far, and that's less than half the pledges, so depending on what kind of earrings we got (I'm thinking small studs of some kind) we could possibly swing earrings, the smaller care package, and a bouquet on her birthday, but I don't really know...... one thing we do have now that we didn't have before is more time to decide. I can go ahead and send the messages now, and then we take as long as we need to figure out the rest (we can even wait until we really know how much money we have to work with). Then again, there's also the idea of charity which we shouldn't forget either (although Diane's started a seperate project for that that everyone should check out!). Anyway, sorry I keep rambling like this, but I'm just trying to put every possibility out there!!
So now I need to know.... what do you all think? As frustrating as it's been with trying to figure out a way for this project to work, I think it's actually gotten better and better each time it changes! But it's more important to me that everyone else is happy with this plan because I don't want anyone to be upset that it's not what was originally intended. I feel really bad at this point because several people have already sent their money, and I don't want anyone to feel that I've misrepresented anything or am not living up to my end of this project. I definitely want to see this through, so I hope everyone understands that I'm trying my hardest to do something that will be the best for everyone involved (especially what's best for Michelle!). If anyone is unhappy with the change of plan, please let me know, and I will return your check ASAP!
I think that's everything, so please post away with your comment/suggestions!

This probably isn't too helpful, but I thought I'd say the idea of earrings is lovely. If you go with that, you might want to keep in mind that ruby is the July birthstone!
(BTW, I want to apologize that I can't contribute financially. During the COI season, I have less than nothing to spare... I did write a message though, and if you should chance to want some kind of graphics done as a front cover for the messages or something, I'd be glad to see what I could invent--though I'm sure others could do better.)

Take your time, Jenny. I'm sure you will make the right decision. Keep my money. We'll figure something out. And who knows....maybe after all the hoopla dies down she'll have more time to appreciate our gift, whatever it may be.

Jenny-----I personally like the three part project, but whatever you and the others decide is great with me. I am sure everyone appreciates all of the thought and effort you are putting into this complex situation-----who could have guessed it would be so hard to do. I can certainly understand why though now, with what you have been able to find out, and I am happy that they take such precautions with our girl. Less for us to worry about!!!!!!!!Thanks again for all your hard work.

Well first of all, I just want to say that your hard work is much appreciated by me and I'm sure everyone else on this board. So no, we won't be disappointed!
I really can't decide. All the ideas are great. So, I will go along with whatever the majority consensus is. How expensive would ruby (her birthstone) earrings be?

I trust your judgement Jenny. I have no problem with you keeping my money, whatever we decide to do. I also like the idea of Ruby earrings for her birthday. I think you could get a nice pair for $200.00(that's the pledge, right?) I can't imagine that anyone thinks you may be mishandling the money, I certainly don't. Thanks again for all your hard work....and YES, I would DIE if I saw Michelle wearing our earrings!!!!!!!

Jenny,
I love the ruby earrings idea. But if that doesn't
work out, the 3-part gift sounds great also or any
combination of these. I trust you to do whatever
you think is best, and thanks for keeping us so up

i really like the 3 parts thing ... very sweet, very well planned out and it spans a good amount of time to kinda give that "we always care" feeling that will last for a while. personally, *if* i was dating michelle (ooooooooooooo aaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh ... oh, i was saying) i would do something similar to the 3 part thing. it does take planning, and it shows the amount of effort put into this to mastermind this massive display of our support and devotion to our Magical Michelle
in any case, i am behind you all the way on your decision to give the gift to Michelle. no matter what it is, i am sure that she'll love it. i kinda would like to see her reaction to it soon ... but i think that in the middle of summer (when her birthday rolls around) having a huge care package from us arriving for her would definitely make her feel special.
oh! when is the absolute deadline for message submission/contributions? i'd like to spread the word to all my friends.

in true red!
I wanted to do links but since they use frames it doesn't work :-(
check out the Ruby jewelry at Macy's.com (http://www.macys.com). Go there and click on jewelry then click on Ruby and on the first page is plain ruby studs.
I know Jordi's suggestion was earings but check out these two necklaces- go to jewelry click on hearts - here is a pic of the first one with rubys:
Ruby and Diamond Heart (http://www.macys.com/images/product/253/p/16261_p.jpg) - that one is a bit pricy and way over budget but Red is for courage which is from the latin for heart and Michelle does have the heart of a true champion!
Another pic and again go to jewelry then hearts: another ruby and diamond heart (http://www.macys.com/images/product/247/p/16260_p.jpg) again expensive. will look some more!

I like the 3 part thing. Ruby earrings are nice, but jewelry is a bit too personal.
I like the 3 part thing b/c it extends all the way to her B day.
Jenny, keep the check do not return. So how swamp is MK with
love and gifts nowadays.
Jenny ,one more question, you mean every gift that is left in the arena
for MK would be searched by her management company first, even my
little bear? I guess that make sense, you never know what psychos and
criminals will do. According to CaptCanada, in worlds there were 4 body
guards around MK.

Jenny--ITA with all of the posts regarding taking your time and not worrying about the money. You are doing a wonderful job at planning this.
I like your 3-part idea the best. The posts are a good thing to get to Michelle first, and the most compact and easiest to clear.
As far as the birthday gift, I support either flowers or earrings. Whatever you decide, both are fine with me. Take care and thanks for all of your hard work!

Heather, I agree with whatever you want to do. However, I would like the gift to be something really special for Michelle, not for charity. I think charity gifts are a good ided, but not for this special time. Michelle jusr won her third world title and she needs to be congratulated on that, personally.
I know she is a multi-millionare, but this is not about money...it's about our joyous congratulations to her on this wonderful occasion! Her birthday would be too late, I think, to congratulate the world gold medal.
I'm so sorry you are having to go through so much "red tape" to do such a good deed. Keep up the good work and if you need more $$$ just ask, I'll be happy to contribute more. You, Heather, deserve a big boquet of roses, too!

Please keep my money, and do whatever you choose. All the ideas are good ones. Whatever is easiest for you is fine with me...
By the way, is everyone who is attending COI bringing a little note or gift for Michelle? Because I know that was an idea at one point, but didn't know if people were doing that. I am going to do that when I go in Detroit and/or Cleveland. I will write on the note that I am a poster at the Michelle Kwan Forum.
I already did this with the stuffed animal I threw for Michelle in Binghamton. I still think it would be neat if MK gets a note, flower, or other small gift from an MK Forumer at almost every tour stop. By the time she gets her big gift, she would really know who we are!

I'll hopefully have time tomorrow to write more specific responses to all your posts, and also I'll call Michelle's reps on Monday to see what they think about our new ideas. I love the earrings idea! Could you imagine if she competed with them on sometime time? I'd probably vote for that as my first choice:) But, I also love the 3-part idea too, almost equally. Whatever ends up easier for you is the best. I'm sure she'll really appreciate it either way.

Jenny, I am eternally grateful to you for your efforts in putting this large project together!! As soon as you mentioned earrings, I immediately thought of ruby posts. Not only is that Michelle's birthstone, but ruby would also be appropriate for the ADITL and TRV programs. However, whatever you decide is fine with me.
AYS
April 17th, 2000, 03:43 AM
Jenny and everyone-
I was just discussing this with my husband, and he made an excellent point:
If we give Michelle a gift like ruby posts, it is something she could always have, and they would be small enough to even keep with her if she wanted. A care package or bouquet will probably mean just as much to her when she receives them, but they will not be something she would easily keep with her over the years. And I think we could get them as small or big as goes along with the budget...I happen to think small delicate jewelry is nicest myself.
I think this is a pretty good point, and supports the earring idea.:)
Also, as someone else pointed out, it just seems like this year's worlds was *ruby*. Think of how she looked in her RV costume...ruby springs to mind;)
Just scanning through a couple of cheapy online catalogs (Zales and Macy's), which list ruby posts at $99 and $69, respectively, I would think Jenny could find *nice*, more elegant ones at a real jewelry store for something within our price range.

Well, I did a quick tally, and it looks like 8 people prefer the earrings idea, 6 people prefer the "3 part plan," and 7 people said basically that whatever I/the majority decides is fine (plus a lot of people who did pick one plan said they would be fine with the other plan too!). So, I think I'm going to look into the ruby earrings, although for those who liked the 3-part plan, I think the earrings will be part of a long term multiple part plan too, because we can still send the care package later, and send flowers on her birthday, etc. And then there's the t-shirt idea in the other thread too.... if she doesn't know us already, Michelle certainly will after all this!
I spoke with the rep at Proper Marketing today, and she was sooooo incredibly nice once again. I am going to fedex her the messages and she said she'd get them to Michelle (I believe as soon as possible -- not at the end of the tour). I am going to make the deadline for the messages this Wednesday so I can get that out to her!

April 17th, 2000, 11:05 AM
Well, I've read all the posts so far and at first I, like skatingfan, felt the earrings might be too personal. But now that I think on it, if it's from a large group of us, and since it's just so perfect that it's her birth stone and fits ADITL and TRV, she might look on it as a special reminder of her victory this year. Plus, it's true that she'd have them for a long time and remember how much we think of her everytime she saw/wore them! I also like the 3 part thing, so if we have enough money, can we do it all? I'll put in more money Jenny!
And shame on anyone if they don't appreciate everything you do. It's a lot of work and responsibility and we really love you for it :) !

I am not that fixed about the 3 part thing. As for ruby it is a good
idea, BTW, do we have enough $ for it. If not, just let us know.
Even if we buy the earrings, we can still do that 3 part thing.
SEnd the messages as part one.
Send the t shirt as part 2, and enclosed a list of all the users

I prefer to send the earrings as B day gift.
Anyway, whatever we decide is OK with me.

I like the ruby earrings idea, but from what I've looked for online, they seem really expensive. If rubies don't work out, what about these tiny gold hearts from Tiffany&co?
Gold for her 3rd world title and hearts for the heart of a champion. plus, how wonderful to be able to give michelle a Tiffany's little blue box. It would be exquisite.

April 17th, 2000, 03:02 PM
I *LOVE LOVE LOVE* the idea of ruby studs, and a note that indicates why we chose rubies (red costumes, her birthstone), and possibly a small boquet of (reddish?)flowers...and, of course, our posts before that. My personal preference is no hearts - they're not as understated as is MK. The diamond ones she's been wearing (wonder who those are from) are very plain, but gorgeous...I think we should get a similar style.
AYS and her husband:) have made some very good points:
1. She'll have them forever.
2. Consider looking somewhere other than typical places like Macy's, which doesn't have the best jewelry, no offense to Macy's shoppers:) . The prices and quality of jewelry varies so greatly that we'll need to ask people who often shop for it. I know a great place in Philly that my jewelry-conscious cousins always go through...and they get QUALITY items at great prices (thick gold, flawless stones). I'm sure there's somewhere like that where you are, Jenny...or I could talk to Heather about the place in Philly and she could look there.
3. The care package won't last. Masks and foot lotion is a great idea, but I don't think that's the direction we should go. Would she even have the time to use them? Those things just end up laying around my house, even though I like the idea of them...and I have more time to pamper myself than she does. Also, bath and body works stuff is nice, but a little overdone at this point...it's the most typical gift I can think of...and you know it'll be a few nice items, and we'll be paying for the presentation/packaging of them more than anything else.
So, I say RUBIES, because they're gorgeous, have meaning, will make an *impression*, and hold their value both emotionally (they won't be used up so she'll more easily remember what they stand for) and $-wise. A great idea! BTW, I hope I didn't put down anyone's ideas or loving intentions because I think everyone is doing a remarkable job! These are just my thoughts...I'm sure she'd like anything we'd give her, but I vote rubies:) . Keep up the good (hard) work, Jenny, and we would never be mad, we'd be a forum of jerks if we were!

I have lurked too long and had to add a comment - I really like the earrings idea and I would like to contribute to this. I looked at the QVC website - they have REALLY nice jewelry (trust me, I buy enough of it) - and I found some petite hoop earrings that have six rubies around the hoop for about $85 - a slightly different option from studs, but still very low profile. I have copied the link here for you to see them. (If it doesn't work, I'll send it again.)

It's funny my husband is participating in this discussion, since he thinks we're all a bunch of lunatic fanatics.:)
I hope you don't think I was recommending we buy MK earrings at Macy's...note I said it was an example of "cheapy".;) Actually, if we do earrings, I'm afraid to say that *someone* might need to pick them out in person at a jewelry store - ahem, Jenny, are you one of those types with impeccable taste? You certainly have it in online forums ;)
Yes, I've noticed the simplicity of the diamond posts MK has been wearing and think we should go that way too. I think we could get something small but still nice.

Just b/c there is a greater chance that she will wear it
to one of her competitions. I con't think she will wear a

I don't really care for that style at the miadora link. I was hoping we would get simple studs similar to the diamond studs she wore at worlds, but ruby instead. Also, we have to watch out that we get genuine and not synthetic rubies.

Check out this jewelry website. It carries both natural and synthetic ruby studs. You can pick the size you want and the shape stone you want. This link should lead to the natual ruby order list. If you click on "Created Ruby" price list, you get the price list for the corresponding sizes of synthetic rubies.
According to this, it looks like the 4mm round studs are closest to out price range if we want to go with the natural. We could get just about anything if we went synthetic.

Thanks, Caroline. I thought I'd seen her with earrings before, but couldn't remember where.
Here's yet another URL for ruby earrings. I like the oval studs.

AYS, the 4mm cost $198 each, so 2X 198 = 396 + mounting.
Lovely rubies though. I prefer natural to synethic rubies.
The synthetic rubies according to the description has the same
chemical structure and optical properties as the natural ones.
The oval shape 6mm X 4mm is $98 each, and 14K gold mounting is
$24 each.

Michellesmom,, I absolutely love the oval studs, the pair in the middle
It is 1.99 carats for the pair, and only $120. The catalogue is from H.K.,
i guess no problem, people order things from H.K. all the time. If need be
we can ask Little Pang to check that place out. I also love it b/c the
mountings are 18K gold. Oh boy, are we having fun here.

That's right skatingfan...I forgot that was the price only for one.:o
I love the oval ones at that link posted by michellesmom. In fact, several of those styles on that one page are nice. I know it's not a simple post, but the ones on the upper left hand corner are still pretty delicate looking and beautiful...gold around the outside for her 3rd gold medal, and ruby inside for her birthday and Red Violin.
The only problem with oval-shaped stud is sometimes they don't stay pointing the same way on each ear, which she wouldn't want to happen in the middle of a competition. HeeHee;)
Anyway, I think those are all nice.:)

i personally have no idea what to look for in earrings much less rubies, but i kinda like circular ones that aren't too big or flashy. kinda concervative in size and don't attract too much attention but it lets you know that its there.i don't know if there is a picture of what i'm thinking of, but uhm ... i'll try and find a picture.
well, my opinion doesn't really matter because i don't know much about jewelry but i just wanted to say that. okay, on with the shopping fellow fanatical fans!

u2, I think not too many of us know about jewelry that much, or at least
I don not. But we can all tell what we like. Why don't you flip thru some of
the links provided e.g the one by Michellesmom is real nice.
Ays I agree the ones on the top row looks good. I like the one in the middle
$250.00. Even the one on the right with 3 rubies and no diamond is good.
Three world championships, 3 rubies, and that is only $70.00, and the ones
on the left look good too for $150.

Yes the ones in the middle are maybe even nicer...they are a little smaller, and very classy looking. I have to admit, like u2asian, overall I prefer the rounder shapes to the oval ones. And I thought the same exact thing about the ones on the right - 3 rubies, 3 worlds!
u2asian - Both the ones on the left and middle top row or the openunion site are similar in style to the one you like from Zales (which are beautiful too) although with no diamonds, but somehow, I don't trust the quality of Zales stuff. I could certainly be wrong about that though. Plus, the openunion ones are 18karat gold, rather than 14k of the Zales.

As much fun as this is... I don't know about buying gems online. My bf bought a precious gem for me from an online store and it didn't look as nice as it did in the picture ( isn't it always the case tho .. heh :-S )
Especially when it comes to gemstones... you've got to actually LOOK at the stone to determine it's brilliance. Even precious gems can look real ugly and dull. In the end we returned the pendent and bought a nicer one from a store ( for around the same price).

Caroline, I agree that shopping gem online could be tricky. I have nver done it before.
rjasmine, I agree with your post #1, gold maybe good to celebrate her gold medals,
championship wins. Of course it is always good to give something to her in a Tiffany
box. I scroll thru the Tiffany site, and on page 6 of the earrings there is a pair of
signature mini 24K gold earrings for $350.00, I think it will look nicely on MK. She may
wear it to a competition.
Nancy, I checked out your QVC site, since you have shopped QVC before, and looked under
24K gold, and found a few pairs of earrings that look good. They range from $100 - $170,
24K gold front with 18K gold post. I like the seashell earring the best. Usually 24K gold
looks too much, but this pair is polished, and polished 24K gold does not look as intense
as unpolished. Mk probably won't wear these to competitions.
Finally, I just played around searching for platinum earrings. I LOVE platinum, especially,
diamonds, or emeralds or sapphire set on Pt ( don't have the $ for it, but I can look right)
I found a sit www.sndgems.com/platinumjewelry.htm
and under showcase VI (the entire showcase VI are Pt ball earrings) The 3mm - 5mm ones
ranges with price of #139 - 199. I know a plain old ball earring may look too boring, but we
know what we get, no being tricked by the picture. And we know it will be Platinum, the most
expensive metal on earth. I can easily picture Mk wearing that to school etc, or maybe even
to competition.
Folks please check these out and see what you think, and finally this is just for fun. What ever
you all decide ruby earrings, gold, Pt, earrings or no earrings is fine with me.
Chemy, where are you, we need a lecture on Platinum.
Lttlepang how did your trip to TST go.

I totally understand some of your concerns & skepticism on purchasing gemstone jewelries on line. I myself was against the on-line jewelry shopping for a long time until I discovered "Gems At Large" collections by the Ramseys through the internet (the ruby earring I posted previously is their original creation). They are members of the AGS (American Gemological Society) and stand behind their each piece with issuing a warranty. Especially, Mr. Ramsey is internationally renowned gemologist who have donated many of his gem stones (both finished & rough) to the Smithonian Museum. I own a coupe of their gemstone jewelry pieces and 100% guarantee "superb" gem quality and craftsmanship of their pieces in spite of their "unbelievably" reasonable pricing. For instance, just look at the backing of that ruby piece--its not a tiny butterfly backing coming with common usual gem stud earring, they give you a heavy, sturdy disk backing. Well, I didn't intend to advertise the Ramseys' Collection here, but I wanted to suggest here is that it's worth taking a little risk to give Michelle what we really want to give. Since congratulating her more recent remakable accomplishment with a gift of ruby earring is such a great idea, let us stick with our orignal plan, shall we?
BTW, Skatingfan, thank you for your kind comment on my pick.

I check in a bit late. :) This is a designer's opinion (you can take it to the bank :) ): Michelle is only 19. Jewelry that's too big or too elaborate simply doesn't suit her age. A tiny rounded stub - like the diamond stub Michelle currently wears - or a bit more fashionable design will be the best. The oval stub a lot of you like is a bit too big and old-fashioned (sorry, don't know how to phrase it more diplomatically :) ). The three rubies on a hoop design on Macy's site is the more fashionable design. I also saw a small marquis cut ruby surrounded by diamonds on a small tear-drop setting on one of the second site someone posted (firstjewelry.com or something?). In both cases, the rubies are small, the designs are more fashionable and there are not that many diamonds. A 19-year-old really shouldn't wear something too shining. And the bigger the gems are, the least likely she will wear it while skating. The color of the ruby should be flame red, not dark red. Again, it's a fashion and age thing. :)
I suggest Jenny go to a reputable store to buy it instead of buying it on line. I checked out some of sites you guys posted. A lot of the ruby earrings don't even have info on color or clarity grade (only one site has this info). It's way too risky.

April 19th, 2000, 07:02 PM
Now that you repost the pic, I see the disc shaped backing you mentioned.
Like I said, this is just playing around and having fun. If gem is too risky, again
I think gold or Platinum will be safer, that way everyone here can have a vote
at least for fun. Mk will be 20 in 7/7, still I agree she shouldnt wear earrings that
look too heavy. That's why I like the Tiffany mini signature earrings.

by reposting my thread. I just wanted to mention that purchasing gem jewelries on the net is not that bad & always a high risk--that's all. Reading some of your comments, I agree that a basic gold/platinum earring would be more versatile than a gem earring. Anyway, Skatingfan, you are so kind to give me a reply.

I would vote for something VERY SIMPLE. Just like her diamond studs, only Rubies.
AYS
April 20th, 2000, 02:16 AM
with Rene, is for simple round ruby studs.
I think a simple round Ruby stud, like her diamonds, is the best solution. We *know* she likes that style - and we don't have much indication about any other earring style that she likes. I didn't know oval was considered less fashionable for her age, but as I posted above, if they don't stay in the right direction on the ear, they don't look right. I have oval opal studs that give me that problem.
If we go for a simple round ruby stud with a quality gold backing, then even if Jenny purchased it in person, there wouldn't be any major decision necessary as to the style - only the quality of the gems and the price. Also, they should be relatively easy to obtain in person, if we don't want to order online, since it is an enduring and popular style. Ordering them online would require a rather hefty bill be put on someone's credit card, whereas if Jenny purchases them in person, she can use cash directly from the donations.
Regardless of the shape, however, I really hope we still stay with rubies wherever we buy them. It seems to have perfect meaning for this situation, being her birthstone and since she had such success with her *red* programs this year.
Jenny, what are you thinking with all this? Waiting for us to discuss it out?

and set aside the virtual shopping for a while.
I think folks need to email Jenny, get her addres and send in the $ ASAP.Last I read Jenny said $323 pledged and $144 collected.
Whether Jenny ends up asking Shep's office to order something on line and reimbursing him or going to pick out the present herself SHE SHOULD HAVE ALL THE $ TO COVER THE EXPENSE AT THAT TIME.
I think logistically it maybe easier for Jenny just to ask Shep's office to order or buy the present. That saves the extra step of Jenny or someone buying the present then send to Shep's office. Believe me I have sent things to Shep's office for MK and things seemed to be lost.
Whatever you guys decide is fine with me. It is true that MK does not wear much jewelry. We have seen her in the diamond studs (I be those are set in Pt), and the platinum row of small diaond ring she wore to today show.

Natural rubies, studs with quality sturdy backings, as similar to MK's diamond studs as possible, bought by Jenny - in person - from a GOOD jewelry store (in which she can examine a number of different pairs in order to get the nicest stones)...
maybe Jenny can even take a picture of the ones she sent so we can see what they look like:) .

Jenny posted a notice under announcements that she had to leave town for a family emergency, and she extended the deadline until she gets back. (Hope everything is ok, Jenny, and the check's in the mail ;) )
When I posted the Hong Kong URL, I didn't necessarily mean to order from them online, just that there were some examples of what's available. However, I have bought a lot of stuff online and have not been disappointed. You just have to check references and make sure they have a money-back guarantee.
I hadn't thought of the ovals turning when she skated, so now I like the round rubies idea best.

I love the idea of ruby studs, but I also vote for buying in person, not online. Re: colored gemstones-the quality ones usually cost the same (I'm talking about loose stones) regardless of where you buy them. Last summer we were picking out a sapphire to replace the diamond in my engagement ring & I found out that they wer $730.00 a carat at the local gold & silver exchange as well as at the priciest jewelry store in town. The exception was Zales-they were cheaper than everyone else & the color & clarity of the stones were noticably inferior to the others. I love the idea of them coming in a Tiffany's box but there might not be a Tiffany's or Harry Winston or Cartier where Jenny lives. However, I think the nicest part of this project is sending our posts to Michelle so she can know how proud we are of her.

Taf, good idea and ideals. I do not know much about jewelry, of course picking the earrings in person will be much better than on line. BTW, is a little bit over $300 enough ? You mentioned Tiffany's and Cartier. to me, of course only the best for MK, I am willing to add in my share.
Then logistically, how are we going to send that to MK, definitelly not her lake Arrohead or El SEgundo address. The earrings will have to be sent to Shep's office first. I recently has lost a bit of faith in that. But of course what I sent to Mk c/o Shep's office is different than something the MKF is sending there. I think we need to insure the earrings right? in case it get lost in the mail.
Please keep up the discussion, I am learning a lot.
PS, one more reason I like the rubby earrings idea is b/c she can wear something red in her sp, even if she decides against a red costume, I am not superstitious.
CaptCanada
April 25th, 2000, 03:52 PM
I was home sick today and was surfing all over the MKF. This is the first time I came on to this thread...I hope I'm not too late with my thoughts.
About two years ago, for my 24th birthday, my bf took me to Birks and told me to choose a pair of ruby earrings from a large tray. I went for a small pair of ruby studs in a four prong setting, even though there were a lot of larger more elaborate settings with diamonds and other gems in them. I'm simply not old enough or big enough to wear anything larger, and I like simplicity. And Michelle is quite a bit younger than me. Judging from her costumes, especially of late, she likes simple too. I was looking at some of the links posted and I definitely think you guys should stick to studs. Around 1/4 carat per ear is, I think, about the right size. This is large enough that there's none of that "is that an earring or a little red speck?", but not so big that it's gaudy. I would concentrate on getting the highest quality for the money and not so much the size, and stay away from all those convoluted settings with weird shapes, diamonds, etc. And I would take natural rubies over synthetic ones.
Also, you can get much higher quality gem stones from a private jeweller for a fairer price than any Tiffany's, Cartier, Zales, etc. These guys have much higher overhead, middlemen, etc. For my engagement ring, my fiance chose the stone and setting himself. He could not find such a high quality stone from any of the big name jewellers, and he payed less for it than he would have for the lower quality stuff from the big chains. Nothing says "we care" like quality, it has to be something she'll be proud to wear. My ring is not big as far as diamonds go, but whenever I get it cleaned, someone always says "he must love you very much". I think it's worth a visit to an independent jeweller to see what you turn up. In particular, Indian and Chinese jewellers have really great selections. If you've ever seen Indian women, you'll know why...they wear tons of jewellery. And there are usually tons of jewellers in Chinatown...most sell a lot of jade, but they often have other gems stones as well. I know this is more work for Jenny, but I think it could be fun for her too. My fiance still describes with awe what it was like to look at all the different diamonds as they spilled out of the jeweller's bag. I wish I could have seen that. Also, the jeweller can help you pick something really appropriate...they have very trained eyes. If you brought in a picture of Michelle, I'm sure he'd help pick out the right colour stone for her. Anyway, my fiance has always had great advice and total satisfaction with independent jewellers.
I think the ruby earrings are a wonderful idea. There is a passage in the bible (proverbs 31:10): Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies and (job 28:10) No mention shall be made of coral, or of pearls: for the price of wisdom is above rubies. There are many references to the value of rubies in various other texts as well. I'm guessing MK is oblivious to most of these, but what girl wouldn't be thrilled and touched to receive such a gift? And it's her birthstone too...how fitting!
About the price, all my fiance will say is that mine cost between $400 and $500 for two 1/4 carat studs in a 14 K setting. This was two years ago from a big Canadian chain (Birks). I would advise an 18 K setting for MK. Some people (like my sister) can have reactions to lower settings...why take chances? Another reason Indian or Chinese shops are worth checking is that they carry 18 K and up almost exclusively because we do not wear lower carat content as a rule. Any chinese jewellery I have is 20 K or higher...meaning it is very soft, but them's the breaks.
OK, I must be a total dunce but where is the link with Jenny's address to send her a check? And does someone have an address for the Children's Miracle Network? I couldn't in all conscience give money for something as frivolous as earrings, without justifying it with a donation to a worthy cause as well. Now that we've moved, all the charities here are American, so now seems as good a time as any to adopt a new one.
Thanks Jenny, for all your hard work!

E mail her and she will give you instructions.
Diane : head angel's email is Di925@aol.com
She will tell you what to do.
This is the second year that she is coordinating the Bday project
Actually there is a CMN thread in MK chat, if you click onto it you will know what to do . Also I have just sent checks to the hospital and they return receits, and I xerox the receit and sent to Diane. So I did not send money order to the hospital.
Back to rubby earrings, LOL, my Indian friends wear a ton of jewelry, and yes the quality is good, always set in 24 K gold. Actually, if we raised enough $, I vote for setting the rubies on Platinum, if not definitely at least 18K. I love Pt, there is a luster about it that is so special. And I think MK wears a Pt ring on her R. hand , just watch your today show tape and you will see.
PS. CapC are you aware of a Hallmark ornament petition thread in MK chat? Hallmark is coming up with at Kristi ornament and we are requesting a MK ornament.
