Thought I would post this email I got so that you could write a note to your representatives if you support the ban on Horse slaughter. I used much of their email they sent me, since it was worded well, and sent it off to Brad Miller, my Rep.

They have been shipping horses over the border to Canada and Mexico since Horses have been unable to be slaughtered here in the US many places. We need to close the loophole!

On Tuesday, July 31st the U.S. House of Representatives will be voting on the Agriculture Appropriations bill. This bill now contains language that would prohibit the hauling of horses to slaughter in the U.S. as well as Canada or Mexico. However, it is expected that an amendment will be introduced to strip this language from the bill.

Despite passage of an Illinois State law banning the slaughter of horses for human consumption in that state, Cavel International (the last operational horse slaughter plant in the U.S.) continues to slaughter horses under an injunction granted by a Federal Appeals court. Moreover, since the closure of the two Texas slaughter plants, thousands of American horses have been re-routed over the borders to Canada and Mexico for slaughter. We need to get this legislation passed to close the loop holes that have allowed for the continued slaughter of American horses.

Please contact your Representative in the House today and ask him or her to REJECT any amendments that would strip the horse slaughter ban from the Agriculture Appropriations bill. Let them know that Americans do not eat horsemeat and that we support a ban on this grisly practice.

You can find your Representatives in the House at www.house.gov or you can be connected to their office by calling the Capitol Switchboard at (202) 224-3121.

You know what I was thinking about this?
I recall a post in another thread about other people in other cultures eating horse meat and if they wanted to do that then so be it, implying that it is ok to send our horses over there to be slaughtered and eaten over there.
Now lets just think about a society that enjoys cannibalistic practices. We don't do it, but would we then say well since others do it, let's just send humans over there and let them be slaughtered to be eaten?
Yes human and horse are different, but the principle is the same.
I don't condemn societies who eat horse meat (and don't condemn for the most part :P those who might be cannibalists), but I do say, get your own meat!

So I am against shipping horses anywhere else to suffer the same fate we are trying to avoid in this country.

Yep, thats exactly how I feel, Lisa. I don't like the slaughter or eating of horses at all, but if other cultures want to do it, fine. Its their culture. It isn't our culture though, so it goes against our system, IMO, to send OUR horses over there. Same would go for any animal that isn't eaten in our culture.
