The MKF Convention Bus Tour

Well, I just got home from the first MKF Convention. I am thoroughly exhausted but at the same time elated. It was truly an experience of a lifetime. It was so wonderful to meet so many MKFers and be able to associate faces with the names I have seen for so many years. And of course, I want to thank the organizers; I can’t believe what a wonderful job you did! There were so many fun events and activities. It is amazing how much creative work and care you put into each event.

My favorite event was the bus tour around Los Angeles, visiting significant Michelle shrines. KeithB did an amazing job of decorating the front sides of the Tosca coral bus with giant appliqués of Michelle performing her split falling leaf. Also, many thanks to Lyrakwangelica for hooking up the bus’ loudspeaker to his ipod and keeping us enthralled and often in joyous tears as the bus rolled along, blaring music cuts from Michelle’s programs.

When we started out, the mood on the bus was festive, bordering on raucous. We tooled around the streets of suburban Rancho Palos Verdes looking for the Kwans’ first house. Then we found the little shopping mall with the rink where Michelle first skated. Soon we were heading into Torrance to eat lunch at the Golden Pheasant.

After lunch, the mood on the bus changed quite a bit. Maybe it was because some of us had eaten too much, or perhaps it was because we had all stayed up way too late the previous night at the costume party. (By the way, I am still glad that a certain CostumeAdviserChez did not prevail in convincing me that it would be possible to tastefully impersonate the Dortmund Streaker!) Anyway, after lunch, on the trip over to UCLA, everyone became very quiet and peaceful. I think that was the pivotal moment of the Convention, when we stopped trying so hard to be entertaining and became used to each other, comfortable with each other, just being ourselves.

Before the event, as I was flying to Los Angeles, I wondered if at the Convention we would inevitably form cliques, divided by age, gender, nationality or some other superficial criteria. As I looked around the bus, I noticed that the pairs of seatmates were extremely varied. I was reminded of Michelle’s early COI bus tours and how she befriended and often sat with Harris Collins. In retrospect, I don’t know why I would have expected anything different; one of the beautiful aspects of the Forum is the way that friendships are forged across all lines.

Well, I’m really wiped out now and am falling asleep at the keyboard, but I just wanted to post quickly and let everyone know what a terrific time I had. I will leave it to the other attendees to tell you their stories and their experiences at some of the other events.
Best Wishes and Goodnight,
HD

HDm,
Luv your story! But I must take issue: I would not have been promoting that your replicate the Dortmund dude. Rather, I would have favored the "Will You Marry Me, Michelle" underwear dude. Much easier to pull off.

GraciousChez,
Glad you liked the story. Unfortunately, I can not change it to include the underwear guy; it would make the story much too brief.
Anyone for pun control legislation?

Ms. Seye, you are a funny lady.
Before we are all labeled profligate wordplayers, I will guide the conversation back to the story.

The story really has its genesis in the pre-competition excitement pens that we used to have, where imagination trumped tangible resource.

Mark Twain reveled in the economy of words. He wrote:

My uncle, John A. Quarles, was a farmer, and his place was in the country four miles from Florida. … I have never consciously used him or his wife in a book. But his farm has come very handy to me in literature, once or twice. In “Huck Finn” and in “Tom Sawyer Detective” I moved it down to Arkansas. It was all of six hundred miles, but it was no trouble, it was not a very large farm; five hundred acres, perhaps, but I could have done it if it had been twice as large.

The lovely Mr. Clemens. I just re-read Huck Finn a few months ago. I believe I like Huck much better than that rascal Tom Sawyer. :D

Hmmm. I might move some property one day. What a lovely way to accomplish the task.

However, I would love to hear some more of the imaginative tangible resource trumping. Please do continue. :D

Lisa, it has been a long time since I last read Huck Finn, but I can remember thinking the same thing about preferring Huck’s personality to Tom’s. I also remember being mesmerized by the raft trip down the Mississippi.

I, too, am curious about what else happened at the convention. The HD in the story said that he would leave it to the other attendees to tell their stories, so perhaps some others will pick up the thread.

In any event, it has been nice posting with you.
May all your nonesuch be royal.

Herr, I read your double pun while simultaneously watching the film Gods And Monsters, starring Ian McKellen as Frankenstein director James Whale. In the film, after he recovers from a stroke, a young film student interviews him and sassy and catty Whale gets bored with the line of questioning and plays a game of strip poker in a sense with the kid. For every question asked he has to strip. Eventually he gets him down to his jockeys and the scene ends with Whale fainting from not taking his meds for his stroke. Later in the film he tells his housekeeper he is simply going to have a brief chat with another young man, his gardener this time. She reminds him, "Remember your last BRIEF chat?" Which of course reminds me of your post. You two are silly, very silly indeed.

Hi Lyra,
It’s interesting that the post had a simultaneous resonance with something outside the computer. That would make a weird Twilight Zone type of story; if someone’s life started to echo posts they were reading on a forum. If I realized it was happening to me, I would run – not walk – to the “Michelle Speaks to MKF” section!
Take Care,
