Her performance was so beautiful!!! Her layback changing movements were so so so good!!!...BEAUTIFUL!!! I luved how she straightened out her leg!!!...it was funny...finally they can say MK has "improved"!!! The Charlotte turn into the spiral part was extraordinary!!! Her arms were so nice while she was doing the split!!! The scratch spin at the end!!!...SO SO SO fast!!!... Magical!!!

I live in Toronto, Canada... Brian...the layback was superb!!!...although I like her old position better...this turn-out was very very beautiful!!! Usually...I feel that the turn-out is awkard...but not on MK!!! Her interpretation of the music was excellent!!!

Beautiful Program... I love her layback, but i didn't like the straightened foot at the end. The Charlotte and the scratch spin were awesome.

Good girl Michelle! The layback is so improved. I liked both the layback with the turned out foot and the Peggy Fleming variation. Both were so beautiful. As always.

I'm so glad Michelle changed her layback. Now we won't have to hear about her poor free leg position all season. The control coming out of her jumps was great, and I love the new ending on the Charlotte. I can't wait to see her new SP & LP. I hope there isn't any golf on that weekend.

What I love about her program is the simplicity. She did not pushed it too much, she definitely did not go out of her way to show you that she can do this or that, jus simply skate. What does BUTTon mean when he says, "hers is the fourth in this program." Does he mean MK's layback rank 4th among alll the female skaters in the competition instead? It kind of make sense if he means comp, after Angela - IMO Angela has the best layback, and SH, and SH probably tie for 2 and 3. I think MK has to end the spin with a straight leg position b/c she needs to maintain the speed of the spin. But her current layback has good enough speed, beautiful back position, and good turned out hip initially, that I think the variation at the end will be ok in a competition situation. I admire her so much, she may not be the most talented skater, I guess people always say Nicole is the most talented skater. But Michelle works so hard, she never disappoints. The gracious way she carries herself on/off ice is phenomenal.

I thought it was a very pretty program although I didn't like the way her leg just sorta hanged there at the end of her laback but overall her layback was immensly improved my favorite part had to be the circular spiral sequence.

I had to watch her 3 times!!!! The ease in which she performed was amazing....Yeah for the double ax!!!Phew! Not one bit of ice flew up in any of her landings...Love the layback, the scratch spin....It was such a mature program, done with such elegance...I loved her interview at the end..."Not my title" was classy....Now don't hate me...What did you think of the costume? I thought that it was a bit "un" for Michelle. She's too beautiful to wear a rather mundane dress...Also, as beautiful as the music is, I don't like the singer's voice. I listened to it last week on real player, and I was undecided...I love the words, I just wish a different voice was singing it...Please you all know how much I love Michelle....I AM NOT CRITICIZING HER!!!!! But all in all, she was her usual magnificent self....So grown up...sob...sob....

Thanks for removing the sigline Laine! ;o) I liked MK layback and how she ended it. It's so cool how MK listens to the criticism and improves if she sees fit! Class act! I really liked the costume. Kwanette, I know it's nothing against MK that you don't like the music. The music annoys me a little too. Desiree's voice is a little annoying. I dunno I have to get used to it. But I think it sounded better than the music clip did!

Another beautiful program of Michelle. Very soft, passionate & soulful. Her layback position is so gorgeous! The free leg and the arch of her back are simply outstanding. Mr. Button and Peggy Flemming can’t criticize any further for that. I would say this is definitely the biggest improvement we see in her skating this season. While the leg & body position and centering is perfect, I wish she would change her hand position to the way Karen Kwan does hers. The left hand wrap around her waist is not so nice. The new and interesting in-between movements she does are so beautiful and unique. For instance her hand and leg position at the exit out of Charlotte; the landing of her 3xS and holding the landing into a backward spiral is just magical (IMO is much nicer than that of Kristi Yamaguchi); the forward scratch spin at the end of the program is phenomenal. The beginning of the program wherein she kneeled and slides forward, and many more. The music is lovely (not so much the singer), the program is outstanding, her jumps and landings are secured, her skating looks very good, her hairstyle looks nice and natural on her, but her custom is, IMO, not the best of hers. If she wears the purple custom she had at the 2nd Disney special, it would have brought out a different effect to the program. This is just my opinion, please don’t flame me for saying. I love Michelle and I want her to be the best of all!! Michelle should start reviewing other designer’s resume, Jeff Billing’s design and choice of colors doesn’t bring out her beauty. Let me say this, Karen Kwan’s design paired with Mare Talbot’s making are way much better than Jeff Billing’s night gowns-lingerie-styles.

Who designed for the costumes at the Disney Special? Personally I really liked this one for R and J! BTW, I was curious about the spelling costume as "custom"-- is that a local thing?

Michelle, a terrific start! The improvement on layback. Good girl!! Costume is not her best. Michelle, you have the most beautiful arms in the world, better show them naturely than with some cover-up. I think a simpler design would be better. What do you think, Yingshan? Her hair improves, too. So cute! Would be better if there is a way to make them look softer in the front ... Glad to see Elena so happy for her in the K&C.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who did not like the vocals on Kissing You. I thought the instrumentals were beautiful and then she started singing. I'm just not a big vibratto fan. I thought the program was really good. I'm not educated in skating enough to comment on the aspects of the elements but I thought it was an all around nice program. I also enjoyed Sarah Hughes' program.

I love the new layback, even the way she brings her foot down at the end. At the same time, her head is out to the side...there are so many small, in between things she does things that no one else thinks to do! The foot work she did to the "tinkeley" piano interlude was exquisite. And the exit to the Charlotte blew me away. As for the music, at first I didn't like it, but after watching Michelle skate to it three times, it really grew on me. Didn't you just love her facial expressions? And her jumps were beautiful. I especially liked the 2 axel right at the beginning and the triple sal with the long landing. Finally, the costume is OK with me. It's soooo good to have Michelle back and improved!

I was really pleased with her improved layback. It was really nice seeing her spin fast at the end. I am sure she skated fast but with the calm music and the tv camera moving with her it looked like she was moving at about an inch per hour (does she skate fast? I really do not know b/c I have never seen her live). I must be in the minority about her hair. IMO her hair was not improved. I prefer her with long hair but I still think that her short hair looked best at Nationals. I know almost everyone had to sit through an hour of the the most boring "sport" on the planet, but did anyone else have the problem that during Sarah's and Irina's programs the color would dim and the screen would turn black and then the audio would quit and after a few seconds you would see and hear again only for it to happen again in a few seconds making you miss most of their jumps? I was so relieved when it showed Michelle's without doing that. I'm not sure this is the place to put this but whenever I hear I the song that Maria skated all I can think of is the singing orange on Seasame Street!

Michelle.........ahhhhhhhhh, my Michelle. So wonderful and brilliant. I'm so glad about her hair, I didn't like the spiky pixie look at all. Actually, if she grew it out a little longer, I might even prefer it to the classic bun that I love so much. Costume: goregeous in my opinion. I like her costume designer. I think what I want Michelle to start working with different choreographers, though. Maybe not with her sp or lp, but with her exhibition. I kind of feel that Lori's choreography is a little to subtle. I would like more noticable changes especially with the combo spin. Her performance was surprisingly understated. The impression was so fleeting. I had to rewatch it a couple of times as did others. Nice to see the double axel under control again and.........oh my God, she finally took the advice that I was hoping she would take and turned out the free leg. Now, I just hope she changes her arm movements in that layback. I'm glad she's working on her spins. Much improvement! I also liked the Charlotte spiral exit in this program more than the one in past performances.

Having gotten to see the competition in person :-) I can tell you Michelle did indeed skate fast; all the skaters who were "on" did, that I can recall. The program mesmerized me when I was there in person, and I loved it even more after seeing it again. Gorgeous spiral and Charlotte spiral (both of which I had an excellent view of during the comp), and every jump was perfect. I wasn't sure she'd get a 6.0 from those blind judges, but she definitely deserved it.

i loooovvveedddd her performance! it was so touching,so magical...i was a little mad that there was talking (as in commentating) during her program cuz i wanted to watch it quietly...what mr. button meant as in "fourth" was her layback was the fourth one to show up that night that was the best..he didnt mean it was the fourth best in rank...

I am sooooo excited about the layback. It was beautiful, maybe a change in arms in SP & LP? I liked the footwork alot but it seemed kinda slow on TV. Her hair is BEAUTIFUL! I thought the costume was pretty and the color was better than Ariane. For me the best part was the layback, the Charlotte and the scratch spin was so wonderful. I don't remember seeing every jump being so perfect and smooth in a program since Philadelphia! But I have to tell you that I really hate that music. I'm sorry but there it is. I really hate it. But I don't even care much because Michelle was in top form. Oh also, the end of the salcow was AWESOME!

And the program was simple, understated, elegant, and free. She just let herself go there and I felt like at times she was flying. She really is a person who follows through with her words. She said she had a lot of things to improve upon and every year we see a change for the better. The Layback was gorgeous and I'm glad @#%$ Button and Peggy Fleming enjoyed it immensely 'cause I did. The Charlotte into the attitude spiral exit was gorgeous and the foward scratch spin was breathtaking. Glad @#%$ empasized the difficulty of it too. I'm going to watch it again tonight after this, I've watched it about 10 times already. Man was I starved for MK skating. As for the costume, I like it because it was a new look...actually, ballerinas wear a lot of those wraps, I think MK even has a black warm up version of that if you guys check your pre-Olys stuff. The hair is much longer than last years and flowed better. And man did she look slimmer this year or what. She looks quite lovely. Did you guys all notice Richard Callahan come out to see MK skate. Happen's right when MK does her opening pose.

I rewatch the R&J program about 6 times, I love her layback spin. She completed at least 8 revolutions, actually more like 10 with the free leg held high and turned out. That will meet all the sp technical requirement, therefore I do not mind one bit that she dropped her leg for the variation position.

I agree, as usual, with Kwanette and Ginny Smith...Michelle was awesome! It was wonderful seeing a new program after such a long summer. Unfortunately golf pre-empted one hour and ten minutes of the telecast. Did that happen to anyone else? At leastIi got to see Irena, Sarah, Michelle and Maria. What did you guys think of Maria's interview? Michelle showed so much (more) class! I loved Michelle's costume, but not the hair. I *really* liked it shorter. It just looked "un-kept" or at least not as sophisticated as it usually looks. But, who cares about the hair? The skating and magnificent personality won out today!!!!!!!

I thought @#%$ Button said that Michelle's layback was the "forte" of the program, not "fourth". Forte means "strong point". Which is a very good compliment from @#%$ OT English lesson from my 12th grade teacher: That forte is pronounced "fort", not "for-tay" like the musical forte. I remember her drilling that into the class's head. Just wanted to be able to use that knowledge for something. :o)

Mano, I did not notice Richard Collagan, but I did notice that Elena tapped Michelle on her back when the 6.0 was announced and Michelle looked back, all smiling. I actually think Michelle look younger than last year, but she looked so young at the GWG exhibition. So much a different hair style can do.

I lost count of how many times I watched the program tonight. Sometimes I would watch the program entirely without rewinding; other times I would keep rewinding to watch the elements that I loved seeing Michelle performing; still, other times I rewound the tape just to catch audience reactions. I love both the classic layback position and the dropped leg position that MK displayed. She drops her leg right in time with the piano. It kills me so. =) I am definitely a big fan of MK's hair now. It reminds me of Elena's hairstyle. It's funny how it looked kinda plain during opening pose and then how the wind seemed to give her hair a beautiful look to it. Yes, I remember Michelle having a black version of that wrap around thing at the Olympics. The color of this costume was more noticable, so IMO better than that of Ariane. I was thrilled to see Richard Callaghan watching MK skate,--I noticed him and Todd watching MK last year at the Keri Lotion comp. too, when MK went into her layback in DP--Elena give MK the tap after the 6.0, the group of skaters in the Kiss 'n Cry all follow Michelle with their eyes and heads as she set up for her 3 salchow, and black people in the audience with these huge smiles plastered on their faces clapping uncontrollably(not to be taken as a racist comment or anything, it's just nice to see something I never saw before)

LOL, Karin, and LP thanks for enlightening me about the forte and forth, not fourth. After watching R&J more than 10 times, and watching the rest of Keri lotion twice. I conclude that MK's layback is actually better than Sasha's, at least. In the Keri competition. A good spin should have speed, good back position, good center, at least 8 rev for a sp, and yes that attitude position of the free leg. MK's layback spin satisify all that. folks may prefer to see a different arm position or MK to hold the free leg all the way to the end of the spin w/o the variation at the end. But MK's layback, satisify all the requirement. Sasha's spin was not as well centered at the end as MK's. May not be as well with the speed, not too sure, and she held her free leg in the attitude position for about 6 rev, good enough I guess for a lp requirement, not for a sp requirement. I still assume that Angela will have the best layback with Sarah Hughes second, then Michelle.

Karin

I actually liked Sasha's layback better than Sarah...but I luv them both...although Sasha is the real adorable one!!! Does anyone think Sasha resembles Elena in the sweet way??? Anywayz...Sasha's spiral was amazing!!! The free leg was high...the lean was good...and the extension!!!...Sarah...although has the extension now...isn't as good as Sasha on that one move IMO!!!... But I think I like them both equally...

IMHO yes, her layback was a great improvement...and i too liked the final leg position when it was close to the ground. but i agree with however said that Michelle should move her arms. That particular arm position doesn't help extend her line during the layback. i liked MK's hair better this year...but i have to admit the change is subtle. i can't even really put a finger on why i think it's better or even if it's different. the front looks the same but the back is in longer layers giving her head a rounder profile in the back i think. and was it my tv or did michelle look like she had a hint of highlights? i don't feel one way or the other about her costumes but i do like this lavender color though. It's both pretty and current. i don't think her layback is the only big improvement this year. i did not think it was possible for michelle to land better than she did...but she does. great flow! (although she looks like she lost just a smidgin of height) who was saying how there was not a speack of ice that flew up. how true! now i hope that she will start holding her landing on her 2a again. but let me not ask for too much and just be happy for what is there! and her arm movements are even better than before...even more graceful and more natural. i thought michelle lost some of her flexibility...like her spiril didn't seem as high and her charlotte wasn't as straight of a split (or am i not remembering incorrectly?)....but her exit on the charlotte was extroidinary! just beautiful!

Karin

MK's spiral didn't look "as good" because of the angle they showed it at!!!...they went with a higher yet flatter angle...usually they go really high...or head on with MK... It was definitely the angle!!!

Michelle's skate was totally awesome! She is the best! I wish she would read all that we say here, about her talent and skill, and about how much we love her. And about this: Dear, sweet, wonderful Michelle, you have always been the best skater, the most talented, the most awesome on the ice, and you always skated, well, not *to* the music, no. You skate with the music. No. You skate IN the music. The music is IN you, and you in it! Yes! Until the Keri.... What was that? Michelle, as nearly perfect as any skater can ever be, skating in spite of the music! How do I say this? Michelle, I love you, I love your skating, I love your personality and your skill and your looks and your new dress, but... That music took away from the fun of watching you skate! Please get a new song....

Now, I think I am returning to earth a bit. I agree with G Skate, that the song is not that good. Actually it is 2 songs consequately that MK skated to that I do not care for much. But on the other hand, like many COI reviewers say, only Michelle has the ability of elevating relatively uninpsired songs to high art. I actually like Kissing you less than OMT. Well this is just an exhibit, or pro am program, as long as her competitive programs have good music, I guess that is what counts. I think improving her layback spin is such a great step. She can still improve on that. What I want to see is for Michelle to raise the degree of difficulties of her 3/3 jumps, and keep working on her 3a. I think she will need those for 2002.

Our smart angel knows, skatingfan!!!... It would be so exciting wouldn't it??? U know what too??? If she held the layback with the turn-out a little longer...that would be amazing...but it's so beautiful right now...as Joshua said...MK drops her leg with the piano notes...

Kissing you is the only music that Michelle has skated to that I actually dislike. I wouldn't listen to One More Time at home but when she skated to it I loved it. Maybe it's the vocal I don't like, I don't know.

I was both impressed and unimpressed by Michelle's performance at Keri Lotion yesterday. Her layback position is much improved, the arch in her leg as well as the turn-out of the foot is beautiful; that last variation where she dropped the free leg down wasn't exactly the most flattering position, but it's nice to see change. Her double axel looks stronger and controlled, her lutz, using the mohawk entry, is smooth and clean (BTW, does she still switch the edge over?), and her salchow was very beautiful, very controlled and with flow, like Oksana's. However, I think that the program was rather generic. This is probably the umpteenth program in which Michelle has done the whole calm, gentle, soulful routine and I wasn't impressed with the music itself. Overall, it is a good start to the new season; if this is any indication, she should get better as the new season continues. Off the subject kind of, but is it hard to change a layback position once you've learned it? Like Michelle changed hers over the summer, so I was wondering if Maria could take a hint and fix her droopy free leg. Just wondering.

Michelle continues to captivate me with her skill as a performing artist. She has taken a rather ordinary piece of music and created an audio-visual thing of beauty. What is important is that she personally found the song (presumably the lyrics) to be touching, and that the judges gave her splendid presentation marks for the total package. While the music did not have as big a range of tension and release as some of her programs over the years, there were still some delightful high points such as the piano interlude with her footwork sequence. When you add up the technical merit such as the improved layback free leg, the variations on the Y-spins, the hands-off Charlotte with the exit variation, and of course the beautifully landed jumps, it is clear that she delivered the goods in a most impressive and heartfelt way. I guess I'm probably one of the only ones who really enjoyed the singing. I really liked the music. She always has such great taste in music. I'm glad she chose Kissing You instead of the Prokofiev selection I recommended. OMT was the only music that I didn't really like, but even it was the best of bad music in comparison to the bad music used by other skaters. I've always thought that Michelle should skate to more upbeat music, music that would end criticism about her using the same music. However, I really don't care anymore. I guess I just wanted her to prove to others that she is a versatile skater who can handle different music. But I totally can relate to why her music seems to be in the same genre. I have the same taste in music as Michelle, although I do have cravings for other types of music once in a while, and I know that if I were a figure skater I would skate to music that I can feel and that would motivate me. I think sometimes I ask too much from Michelle. Skating for her fans is great, but why change who you really are?

Rene

>What does BUTTon mean when he says, "hers is the fourth in this program." Does he mean MK's layback rank 4th among all the female skaters in the competition instead? I thought he meant that Michelle's was the fourth EXCELLENT layback that he'd seen that night. He was raving about Sasha Cohen's, Sarah Hugh's, and Julia or Irina's laybacks too, right? Then later, Terry Gannon pointed out that he knew there would be a layback that @#%$ didn't like, namely Maria Butyrskaya's. Just wanted to add my 2 cents after watching Michelle's first performance of the new skating season! ;) I loved her dress just b/c she's never worn anything that color before. It's a great color to go along with that music. I guess it is a little more intricate than it has to be for the simple, calm type of program it was, though. I loved her new-and-improved layback too! (Haven't we all been saying that?) Did y'all get the impression that she was so calm and peaceful, and truly NOT nervous out there? It's wonderful to see her so experienced and professional, and I loved her interviews...she was the ever-gracious person that she always is, when asked about Maria B. and also when she pointed out she wasn't on some quest to "regain her title"!! :) I love her replies--it shows just the kind of person we all love so much about her!!

If you read rssif, you might have read this comment: I hate the music! It's way too monotonic and hard to hear the lyrics. I've watched many times and I still hate it. I love Michelle's skating content, the layback spins, the scratch spins, the exit of the Charlotte, the landing of the 3 S, the footwork etc. The flow of the program was excellent. As for costume and hair (wonder asked :-)), I like the effect of loose-knitting wrap over beaded body suit, although it was a bit generic. Folks, it's icy blue, not lavender. Icy blue lookes much better on her than lavender, but still not the best color for her. The only thing on her costume that really bothered me was the dusk lilac flower thingie at her waist. Cut it off! It didn't belong there. Someone asked about the designer for her 2nd Disney special. For the last time, it's Scott Lang. I like his work much better than Jef Billing's. This one doesn't look like his though. It looked a bit like Marc Bauer's, who designed her LA costume. I like her hair a lot better since it's softer, with more flow and less spikes. skatingfan, Button said it's the fourth in the program. Michelle did three different position laybacks earlier in the program before that point. Yes, Y-spin is a variation of the layback.

Yingshan-- how did you get that exerpt from RSSIF? I know it's not a website per say but I am so interested in hearing what Loosemore has to say. I am really confused now about what Button meant after hearing all the posibilities! lol! Karin-- I know how you feel about crying! When I watched it last night I was pretty close! A really beautiful program!

i really don't care about the music..i have no preference. michelle said she enjoys the program so thats all i care about... man... how many times have i said that she never ceases to amaze me.... her layback was definatley the highligt of the night, it took me by surprise how much it has improved over one summer! i didn't think her jumps could get more solid but they did, her landings are so soft and light and seems like she puts no effort into it just like the music i have no bias for the costume. i like it cause michelle is wearing it. its definatley a different look though what amazes me is that this is the first major isu comp of the season right? just shows how much the judges love her cause they already gave her a 6.0 right at the start of the season. its gonna be such a wonderful season cause now @#%$ button doesn't have anything to criticize her on now! this is her exhibition right? can't wait to see her sp and lp.....

Googoo, I don't understand your question. What I meant was that I posted similar comment in rssif earlier. Some people here frequent rssif so they might have read my comments already. I use AOL. I have no idea how to access rssif other than searching newsgroup from AOL.

Michelle was the goddess that she was. I was so afraid that i might miss the keri lotion because i was working so hard on my homework/midterm crap.. michelle never disappoints me... she improves every year and add little surprises here and there... By the way Karin, I live on Bayview street too.. however, not in Toronto, but in Oakland, Calfornia...
