She needs to do an East of Eden type of program! She needs a song that has a lush and big ending! Kinda like Todd's programs. Where the Music does some of the work for you! Get's the crowd going! I hope someone in her camp realizes this for the Olympics! What do you guys think? What big lush sounding songs do you see her skating too...Movie soundtracks are the best it seems ..even though RV doesn't do it. She needs a lift in her music for sure!

I would love to see Michelle work East of Eden into the LP for her 2002 Olympic year. She has been using this music for a long time and is my favorite exhibition (although, I love them all!). With the gradual build to a crescendo at the end and the right jumps, this could become a program for the ages. ; ) !!!

WOW!! What music!! What a program...I have loved EOE since 96 EX...I would not be averse to MK's using it...But she will not redux....

Kwanette-she might with EOE, since she's used it several times. I kind of like the idea Liz Manley had for her Olympics-she used pieces of many of her favorite LP's from previous years. That sounds disjointed, but it was edited very nicely and it obviously worked for her.

taf2...that's a cool idea cause I was just thinking the same thing, but of her long programs, Lyra Angelica wouldn't really fit, neither would Red Violin. Salome and Taj Mahal and Ariane could be blended together for a new long program. I can just see it now, opening with Salome, slow section of Ariane and footwork from Taj Mahal. Although, that would take a lot of tricky editing, but think of how unoriginal the choreography would become? And what exactly would her character be? Greek-Indian princess marrying and dancing for heads? HAH...;D

of course, she would be criticized for that, too...So far on other sites we have heard...too dramatic, GFB...what will be next...? I think what Liz Manley did in Calgary was a great idea...of course, with Debi and the "very dramatic" KWITT we saw the emergence of the "theme"....What was the song? "Ya Gotta Have a Gimmick"?

I was thinking the same thing after watching the GPF on Saturday. Arianne is O.K. but the music is too serious. East of Eden was the first piece of music that pooped up in my head. If there's some way that she can turn that into a LP, it would be perfect.

I'm meant popped not pooped (hee, hee).

I too was thinking Michelle needs "inspiring" music, and East of Eden came to mind. I don't think she needs to do East of Eden again, but get music like that; music that just carries you way with it. I was also thinking of Todd's Glory program. Once this year before he skated it (the first time I saw it), the announcer said, "Todd always gets good audience resoponse from this program. People are usually on their feet at the end." And they were. People were on their feet the final 10 seconds of EOE at World Pros last year. Michelle need to skate to uplifting music like that. But first she has to find it.

I don't like the idea of Michelle doing anything she's done before. Also, she doesn't have to do anything that's been done to death or a sickningly sweet movie soundtrack(I happen to like all of her comp choices)BUT, I think what she needs is EMOTIONALLY MANIPULATING music. That's not to say it can't be Classical or interesting or different, it just needs to capture the audience and judges, something that gets into your head right away and leaves you with a big punch. I love all her comp. choices(some more than others) but WE are not the international judges or audience. It just needs to grab you without being too obvious. Michelle is NOT obvious. You classical music buffs know what I mean, there's music out there like that, right?

Hey guys, don't get so excited. Michelle and her coach and choreographer are always usually on target with the music they choose. They always set a high standard of excellence. We might wish for a certain something we'd like to see, but that doesn't mean it would necessarily work for MK. And, by the way, earlier in her career, I believe Michelle did use part of the East of Eden music for either a long or a short program (perhaps it was in 1993). Then, she later used the same music twice for two different exhibition (interpretive) programs. I think that's enough use of that extraordinary music for her. I'm sure Lori Nichol has access to lots of music that we don't know about and have never heard of. Take a breather, please.

I agree that the music makes a big difference. She should use something that starts out soft and quiet, and ends with a big crescendo. EOE is great music--very emotionally dramatic. Although, she has used it alot. How about something from the "Titanic" movie? It has a great soundtrack.

I like Ariane. I'm sorry to say that the music from EOE doesn't really do anything special for me. I've always that her revamped version was too simple(the best word I could come up with). As a Kwan fan, I regret not sharing in your enthusiasm...I don't know why; I can't help it. I say stick to Ariane or the Red Violin. Who cares if others might not get it? I personally think that if Michelle worked on both more and put back the passion and depth of emotions in her skating(the biggest thing that I loved about the revamped EOE), they could be masterpieces.

SkParker I have to agree with you, something from Titantic! I could see her now doing that! But I also think taking some music from her other programs and putting them together would be great, especially if she plans to turn professional after the 2002 Olympics! I hope she doesn't, I love watching her compete!

I was listening to a classical station driving home tonight & they played selections from Lehar's "The Merry Widow", which is uplifting, light, cheerful music. It was perfect for skating & definitely not overused. I could picture Michelle skating to it-in fact, I choreographed the whole thing in my head.

taf2 maybe you should look MK's choregrapher up and let her know what you are thinking! I don't mean anything mean by that comment, so please don't take it wrong! There are just so many things out there that MK could skate to and also do a great job!

for some reason I've always wished that Michelle would skate to (excuse my ignorance)the music that Sarah Hughes currently uses for her LP and Meno and Sand used for their LP back in '98...can't remember the name for the life of me...I know Michelle likes to be original ( as she should)but I truly love that music..someone help me out w/ the name! :)

It's Nessa Dorma, but I'm SURE I've spelled it wrong. I think it is very beautiful, but maybe a bit overused.

Why not Ode to Joy? EmilyJ started a topic for creating a program for MK and that was my choice - <a href=http://pub1.ezboard.com/fmichellekwanforummkfanchat.showMessage?topicID=20 38.topic>thread here</a> I found a sample of the song on CDNow that & put the link in that thread.

I have never felt moved to post on a board. I mostly lurk and read all the (mostly) great insight everyone has on various boards. I am a Kwan lover since she was 12 and placed 6th at nationals in 1993. I have for a long time wished she would skate to something by Rimsky-Korsakov. Scheherazade is pretty good. It also has a nice delicate violin movement that she seems so fond of. But my wish would be that she'd skate to Capriccio espagnol, particularly scena e canto gitano and fandango asturiano. These pieces haven't been skated a lot to, but the music is very familiar and it has great emotional peaks and valleys. She would be sensational, especially with the last two pieces. I can almost see her doing them. Just my .02

My vote goes to the soundtrack of Princess Mononoke. Has anyone here seen the anime? You'd understand when you've seen or heard it.

I don't know if anyone else on the bb even saw this, but back in 1982 there was a miniseries shown on NBC called "Marco Polo". Leonard Nimoy was in it, as well as John Gielgud (sp?). Anyway, it had THE most amazing music in it, especially the opening score. Every time I think of it I can see MK skating to it. How's THAT for obscure music? Frank and Lori mentioned in an article somewhere that they like using music no one has ever used before -- I think this would qualify....:)
