View Full Version : A Vow of loyalty to MK

I know that National are coming in less than a month, and i'm pretty sure that many people--including the media--will start to refocus their attention to the young and up and comers such as Sarah Hughes and Naomi Nari Nam. I don't have a problem with this since Mk has been on top of the sport for soo long, so it's only fair that the media crown their next "darling of figure skating." However, for me, MK will also be my favorite no matter what. She was the first to touch my heart, and she will probably be the last. So what i want us all here to do is make a vow of loyalty to Michelle. That no matter how she does at National and Worlds that we will support her 100% and that we will stand by her through thick and thin. Now, i understand that there are MK fans who are also fans of other skaters such as Irina, NNN, and Sarah Hughes--so i don't expect them to make such vows. But for the diehard fan of MK, let's not forget about how much joy she has brought us all these years. GO MK!! SAndy

Interesting topic, I think MK fans are very loyal. I would never thought of being another skater's die hard fan. To me whether Mk skates elligible or pro, and regardless of her placement she is my most fav skater.

Please..I will never pick anyone above MK! I might say that another person deserved the win over her..but I will always be rooting for Michelle no matter what! NNN and Sarah might skate like a dream and hit 3/3 and 3axel and deserve a win over MK at some point ..but my heart will always belong to Michelle! :) Even Michelle said during an interview that she can only do HER best ..others might hit an 3 axel or a quad and if she can't do that well then she just can't.. but no one will ever surpass her in artistry... I feel the same way about Paul Wylie. They will both be my favorite skaters always!

Me too! Count me in. It is like adopting someone, my heart and soul already belong to that special person, how can I just change my devotion to someone else overnite? I remember in Kristi Y's book that in Oly's, she knew she couldn't do those difficult jumps others could do, but she decided to do whatever she can do very well. Indeed, she handled it well with grace, and her opponents did not jump well, and she got the gold! I am not saying MK shouldn't tackle 3/3. She should really work hard on 3/3 right now! But whatever she is ready for National, World or whatever, she should present her best with grace, act like a champion, and attack! Go! MK, go!

I was actually thinking of this the other day. And I realized, that Michelle could fall on every jump in a program, and she will still be my all time favorite skater. She can get first or last, it doesn't matter. What counts is how much she loves what she does, and how much heart and soul she puts into every motion.

Many skaters will come and go but none of them will ever touch my heart the way Michelle has. She will always be my favorite skater for two reasons: 1)The grace and artistry she has brought to the sport. 2)Her maturity both on and off the ice. It will be nice to see another skater do well at Nationals. Just as long as they don't beat Michelle, I'll be satisfied.

All the media attention on Sarah, Sasha & Naomi may put them under pressure. Remember last year when everyone said that Tim Goebel was poised to upset Michael Weiss and he tanked.

For me there will never be another michelle. I will also never let myself get so attached. I don't know how it happened in the 1st place seeing that I have always been an ice skating fan. All of the people who knows I'm a diehard michelle fan make fun of me and call michelle my sister. Even my mother who use to watch all the skaters loves michelle and only watches when michelle skates says she's my sister to me sometimes. It's funny but cute. People at work know because mk is the wallpaper on my computer. I have the one where it says how michelle turned silver into gold.

I might have other favourite amateur skaters like Sarah, Irina, Jennifer, Fumie, Viktoria, etc...but no matter what happens...MK is the only skater who can move me into tears with her skating and her as a person!!!...and also bring me big smiles!!! No matter what...MK will always and forever be the #1 skater in my heart!!! :-)

No matter how the jumps go, her programs always touch me. Other skaters impress me, but I do not have an emotional reaction. Her programs get better each time I watch them on tape, others get more boring. She is also the skater that made me want to watch more skating, so she holds a special place in my heart and I cannot imagine anyone taking her place.

to Michelle is unnecessary. If you're a true fan, a devoted fan, you would support her win or lose, no matter what. She's been my fave since she was 12, win or lose, and that'll never change.

I vow to always stay 100% loyal to Michelle no matter what...in victory or defeat, in good times in bad...I will always give her my full 100% support and make my support known. Michelle will always be my favorite...not just for her skating, but for her role off the ice as well. What more can we ask for? Michelle...she is the TRUE champion! :) MKfan Cole~

Okay y'all I think I might be the last person getting in on this. I will always keep my loyalty with MK. I have watched her grow up (on TV) and she has always brought a smile to my face! Every time I see her see is smiling. She is the number 1 skater in this world no matter what!

This may sound a bit harsh, but something needs to be said & I'm saying it. The idea that you would pledge your loyalty to anyone is just creepy. No wonder we've been called the Kult of Kwan. Isn't it enough to enjoy Michelle's skating without deifying the poor girl? Good grief, she's got enough to worry about already.

OK, I'm a bit confused. What exactly is the point of this vow?? Obviously, all of us here support Michelle and wish her success and want her to win, and as a fan I will always support *her decisions and skating* 100%. The part that bothers me is when you say fans of Sarah or Naomi aren't expected to take this *vow*. Why not??? Is this for people who are ONLY loyal to Michelle? Is this some sort of vow saying we ONLY support Michelle? Because then I can't take this *vow* or whatever (to me, when I hear vow I think of marraige, and its kind of creepy in reference to someone I don't know and have never met). I support lots of skaters INCLUDING Michelle 100%. You are making it sound like, (in the original post) all die hard MK fans are ones that are 100% "loyal" to her and her alone. Thats simply not true. I am about as big a MK fan as they come, but I like and enjoy other skaters too. Now, I know why some people on other boards make generalizations about MK fans not liking other skaters/competitors. That sounds exactly like what this thread is to me and IMO is unneccessary. You're basically saying that we should all take a vow to not support any other skater besides MK or at least thats how I interpreted it.

While I can be happy for other people like Irina, Michelle will always be my #1 & she's the only female skater I support.

While it's true about us always being there to SUPPORT michelle I just want to say that this is for fun. Don't knock it just let people have their fun. Sometimes people want to talk, write or whatever. It's just to show support. No sacrifices involved.

lavender
January 20th, 2000, 05:14 PM
that I like other skaters and so do a lot of others here but if there was a competition between these skaters then my support will go to michelle 100%. I know that there are a lot of people here who like sarah but I hope they aren't taking it too seriously. I just don't get it. I don't understand how threads just start to turn for the worst. Why can't some gush about michelle on this board if they want to without people getting people upset. I like this board a lot and I don't want to leave but I was surprise about a couple of the responses. We also can't care what other boards say because from reading some of their responses I can see that they don't care about how we feel.

Lavender-- This thread didn't appear to me as something "fun". It did sound serious. Thats the way I interpreted it. If it was intended to be "fun", then that should have been stated as such. A vow of "anything" sounds pretty serious to me. I just wanted to make the point that a vow of loyalty is *not* necessary because we are all fans anyway and (IMO) I am a bit offended that it was implied that die hard MK fans are *only* loyal to her. It is enough just to support MICHELLE 100%, which is what I do. My point was that it doesn't necessarily mean that 100% of MY SUPPORT goes to Michelle. There is a difference there. I support LOTS of skaters besides Michelle: Sarah Hughes, Kristi Yamaguchi, Todd Eldredge, Scott Hamilton, Paul Wylie...the list goes on and on. So I can't say that ALL of MY support goes to Michelle because it doesn't. And thats what this thread sounds like to me...everyone just saying they ONLY support Michelle. This doesn't change the fact that I support Michelle and her skating 100% in whatever she does. By supporting these skaters I ALWAYS hope that they do well and succeed. As for Nationals, I hope that Michelle and Sarah both skate FLAWLESSLY because thats all I can do as a fan of both. I can't say that I would be rooting for Michelle 100% because I am not. I am rooting for both Michelle AND Sarah to skate well. I have no control over the judging and as long as they both skate well, I will be happy and proud of both of them. I don't understand why people find it so hard to believe that people can root for two skaters who are in competition with each other (and still be supportive of both) and why any kind of vow of "loyalty" needs to be declared. Michelle is a person that many of us have never met, she is not a country or a family. Those are the things one should be loyal to. But, anyway, this is all JMO.

lavender
January 20th, 2000, 06:28 PM
I totally understand your point and it is definitely ok to support or like other skaters and want them to succeed but then you have to understand if someone out there only likes one skater then that is ok too. You can't fault them for that. I can name about ten skaters I enjoy watching. I may not be a diehard fan of theirs but that's ok. There are going to be some threads that's not everyone but as long as there isn't any bashing then just let them enjoy, gush or whatever. I agree that the word loyal may be too strong of a word or not the right one but I know in my mind I was thinking just me supporting michelle no matter what the outcome is. Try not to be offended or feel left out because I know your a fan of michelle(and others) but please don't make the others feel bad about posting on this particular thread. I don't know if this comes across wrong but I hope that you know that I mean well.

DianeO
January 20th, 2000, 06:40 PM
Lavender--I know you mean well :) So do I, even I might not have come across that way hehe. I wasn't trying to fault anyone for only supporting Michelle. I never said that. And I don't want to make anyone feel bad for posting on this thread showing their loyalty. I guess my main gripe was just the fact that (as I said before) it was implied that to be a die hard MK fan you only support Michelle. Thats really the only thing that upset me because I do consider myself to be a big MK fan even though I support other skaters. But, anyway, I think I will bow out of this thread now as I feel I am starting to repeat myself LOL. No hard feelings :)

The Kult of Kwan thing started out when Laine brought up a topic and asked if we were in a cult or something. That happened WAY, WAY in the beginning of MKF. A couple of us decided to make it a fun thing and added crazy stuff, like chicken sacrifices and ice blue velvet nun habits. Everytime other people say that about us fans, we just embellish it a bit more with TONS of weird wild details. It always throws them for a loop. In the end, we turn off our computers and continue our life...worshipping the Kwan Bwahahahahahaha!!! Just kidding, just kidding. Littlepebbles link to her drawing of the Kwan Kult summed up that thread best. Check her post below.

I enjoy the skating of many people, but the reason I am drawn to Michelle and place her on a higher level of admiration is that she is, IMO, the only skater whom I can truly call an artist, capable, like the world's great ballerinas, of inspiring emotion and illuminating human aspirations, tragedies, and values through the medium of movement. So, while I admire the skating of lots of people, and even take pleasure in their winning competitions and all that, I admire Michelle as an artist, and competitions are not necessary for her to display the legendary qualities of the world's greatest dancers. So I don't care if she "wins" or not, except that she might be disappointed. I just want to immerse myself in those evocative, emotionally stirring performances.

This topic has been brought up many times in many different boards. I know the importance of being a sports fan, skating fan probably take over priority of being any skater's fan or skaters' fan. I also understand why fans like more than one skater. For me it is very difficult to like 2 skaters/athletes equally well. My all time fav athlete is Michelle, second is Tiger, and third is Emmitt Smith. My all time fav skater is Michelle, then Kristi, Yuka and Sarah & NNN probably are somewhere in top 10. Even though I want all my fav skaters and athlete to do well. I know if MK has a comp on tv that clashes with Tigers golf game on tv, I will always tape his, and watch her real time. If Tiger has a tournament that clashes with the cowboys game on tv, I will watch him and tape the cowboy game. Will I root for Sarah, and NNN, yes,but I will always wish that their placement is behind MK . If they outskate MK, I won't be bitter, I will love MK the same as always. It is interesting that a few mos ago, I wrote NNN and asked for a photo. The reason behind that was b/c I innocently one time posted the term" team Nam" in a general f.s. board, and some poster chewed my head off, saying NNN has no team, just Kwan fan try to make her look bad. I clarified my position. But just for curiosity I wrote her, and see if she has enough of a team to at least put together a photo to be sent to fans. Well, I received 2 photos right before Christmas, cute ones. I am grateful for it, but it does not excite me the same degree as opening something that MK sends to me. I don't know what people will call this, die hardness, being creepy , being loyal, whatever. But if I am call that, I don't care, proud to be. I however SPECULATE that most fans do not like 2 athletes/skaters equally well.

I made a picture of it! http://quick78.tripod.com/KwanKult.jpg The idea I got from the original post was that no matter how Michelle and the other skaters do, was to stick by Michelle. Unfortunately, some people are fickle and will jump on every bandwagon that looks good to them. I know one fan (who I will call Buddy) who was an MK fan and then she didn't win a competition. Buddy decided that he liked the winner of the competition better than Michelle. Now before anyone jumps on my case, I find nothing wrong with that. In fact, it's basically what happened with me, Michelle, and Kristi Yamaguchi a few years ago. What I thought was bad was that he became a fan of this other skater and basically kicked Michelle to the curb. He started bashing her, her skating, even went after her family. Now although Michelle is now my favorite skater, I have never bashed or put Kristi down. I think that is what the original poster was getting at, and when she said that fans that liked other skaters didn't have to take the pledge, I thought she meant those fans that might have another skater as their favorite and MK second or third, or are a fan but not diehard, or may like another skater and MK equally and don't want to put one above the other. I think that is what she meant and I don't think she was trying to put anyone down or call anyone less of a fan than they are. Maybe she just didn't express herself clearly. BTW, I am 100% loyal to Michelle.

January 20th, 2000, 08:51 PM
Mano, I have been a cowboy fan all my life. I learnt very young to accept my most fav team may not always win. Cowboys lost to the Steelers by 4 points (difference between a touchdown, and field goal, and the Tight end dropped the pass in the end zone, resulting in a field goal ) in superbowl. I have no animosity towards the steelers. Nothing against the giants either. I love that Emmitt, he can run beautifully on the field, and talk about character and sportsmanship off the field. Most of us watch MK and Tiger grew up in front of our eyes, Emmitt is almost same way. I believe ESPN, and SI first wrote about him when he was in H.S. Further clarification about the vow of loyalty. I also am not 100% at ease with the word vow, therefore in my first post of this thread, I said, I think most MK fans are very loyal. Vows in the most serious sense to me really should be reserved for marriage, and maybe for citizenship naturalizatin process, and for professional pledge/oath e.g. the Hippopcratic oath. But I can also understand some folks may use the term vow in a looser way that applies to this thread.

Just teasin'. The Cowboys have nothing to be ashamed of in the '90's 'cause they won, what 4 Superbowls?!? That's not a bad record. Wish the Giants were as lucky. I've been a diehard of the Mets since '85-86 and had to stick with them through all those years of not even getting into the playoffs in the 90's until '99. ITA with the word Vow and marriage though. I have no problem using it in the loyalty sense in this thread. It's also like saying, I vow to never eat chocolate again...but of-course that will never happen. I'm loyal to chocolate, hehehe!!! I like a lot of skaters but always be loyal to MK win or lose. Simple as that.

I would love Michelle even if she didn't have her national and world titles and a host of other golds to her name. I will love her if she doesn't regain her world title this year or ever again. I don't need to take a vow to do so, because the artistry and emotion of her skating has carved out a place in my heart and she is truly unique. However, that doesn't mean that I will never have similar feelings about another female skater who evolves her own unique style that moves me or grudge someone who is not a favorite a win over her if that skater honestly outskates her (for instance, as unfair as I thought the GPF competition format was to Michelle, I was happy for and proud of Irina to have gone out and skated her heart out and thought she fully deserved her win in that particular program). My ideal competition is one in which every skater, including my favored skater go out and skate their best no matter the outcome. Among the male skaters, I already have two favorites, Brian Boitano and Todd Eldredge, neither of which win all the time any more, but it doesn't affect my regard for them. Brian was my established favorite before Todd began creeping into my affections with his powerful performances, but he never displaced Brian one inch, because they have such distinct artistic and technical styles. They are unique skaters. I love Todd for being Todd and Brian for being Brian. Fortunately, they rarely go head to head since Brian eschews pro-ams and Todd is keeping one foot in the eligible world. However, if they did, I would want them both to skate their best, feel good for the winner and bad for the loser or bad for both if neither won, but proud of both for what they brought to the competition whatever the outcome. Similarly, while I am not emotionally attached to either Michael Weiss or Timothy Goebel at the present at the level to which I am to Michelle, Todd, and Brian, I am actually pulling for both Michael and Tim at Nationals this year. I'm hoping that Michael can pull himself together, so that he can shine artistically, while I'm simultaneously rooting for Tim to land his quads. I want them both at their best, showcasing their diverse abilities, and as to who wins, let the chips fall where they may. I don't think that wishing each the best makes me disloyal to either skater.

DianeO
January 21st, 2000, 07:51 AM
Well said Armchairskater! Thats exactly what I've been trying to say. I'm glad someone else sees this the way I do. 100% Loyalty does not need to be declared in order to be a fan or supportive of Michelle. And rooting for other skaters along with MK does not make any of us *disloyal* to her or less of a fan.

It's only figure skating. I vow to be loyal to Mike Piazza even if he used to be a Dodger. Sheesh, don't take this thing so seriously. Being a fan means you stick with them through thick or thin regardless of their win/lose record. Don Shula is considered one of the most winningest coaches in the NFL, but along with his great win statistic, he had a h*ck of a loss statistic as well, but Miami Dolphin fans don't give two hoots. Sigh, I really thought this post was just for fun, thus the burnt sacrifice offering. Shall I say more vows of loyalty? I vow to ever be a loyal Patrick Ewing fan even if he never wins a ring as a Knick. I vow to be loyal to Mentadent because it really does taste better than Colgate or Crest and has oxygen bubbles to help in cleaning too. Last vow, I vow to be a Duck for life so that when push comes to shove, the water will still go down my back like it ought to be...unless Exxon Valdez decides to crash my party and add oil to the mix...then oh well.

Skatingfan, I figured in my mind's eye that you were an Olajuwan fan. Them Texas teams means to make life for us New Yorkers a living hell. BTW, San Antonio did NY in last year in the finals...but then again, Patrick Ewing was injured so who knows. The only team that's not gotten under NY's skin is the Texas Rangers that's because the Yankees own them, heehee. Don't worry about the friends part. Just remember that the numbers 6, 8, and 9 are the ties that truly bind, 'nuff said.

I do have to say that I don't like the 'up and coming' skaters all that much. I like the more mature look of veterans like MK, Maria Butyrskaya, and Irina Slutskaya. I do like Sarah Hughes a lot though, and NNN is alright, but I think she could turn very arrogant and pompous.

Yeesh!! When i started this thread i'd never thought that it would generate soo much attention!! Diane, and whoever is offended by my comments, i'm sorry you misinterpreted it. I'm not putting down fans of other skaters at all in my original thread--all i said is that if you are fans of other skaters then i understand that you don't want to take this vow or oath. This vow is just a way of expressing my love for MK and her skating. Yes i do not know Michelle, but the way she presents herself and from watching her grow up on tv, i feel like i know her. As mano and littlepebble pointed out, the vow is meant for fun--sorry i didn't clarify. I just don't understand people who all of a sudden diss or ditch a skater they once love for someone else who they thought is better or won a major comp. Now, in my opinion, MK is the best--but that is just my opinion. I have come to term with Mk wins and losses, that the only reason i watch her is because of the grace and beauty of her skating nothing else. If she wins, great if not then it's ok. However, I will not support other skaters who skate against MK. Although I am amazed and in awe of Sarah, NNN, and Lucinda Ruh, my deep devotion is only for MK and her skating. I guess what i'm trying to say is that true fans should be loyal to their favorites, and not dump them because they loss a game or is not on top of the sport anymore. Figure skating is the only sport that i watch, and Michelle is the only person that i worship--i meant support!! LOL, hehe.. sorry for the teasing.. SAndy

Haven't seen you in ages. How's it going? Don't worry, skatingfan was talking about me since by my count her teams have won more championships over my teams in the 90's. If it wasn't for MK and Tiger, we'd be at each other's throats every Superbowl, NBA Final or what have you. Heehee That cult thread was hilarious though, and I still have that archived. Littlepebbles was on a roll in that one and everyone really joined in the fun.

Sandy--OK. If that was the point of the thread that I definitely agree. I would NEVER *dump* Michelle if she lost. That is just dumb, and I don't think anyone here would really do that (at least I hope not). But you did say that fans of SH or NNN aren't expected to take the vow. I don't see why that is. I am a fan of Sarah, and i like NNN ok, but I still would NEVER "dump" MK for either of them. And, similarly I would never "dump" Sarah or Naomi for anyone else. I really think there are only a few fickle fans out there that would ever actually do that to any skater.

(Hehe!) I love the whole sport of figure skating, and like many other skaters in all disciplines, but no one will EVER come close to the place I hold in my heart for Michelle:).

I know I'm a bit late but better late than never. I have to agree with Ellaram & SJB in that other skaters may impress me but only MK's skating inspires me!

I've been watching Michelle ever since she appeared at U.S. Nationals in 1994 and took second place. She is the only skater that has ever brought tears to my eyes because of her grace and beauty. I will vow to be a Michelle fan forever!!!

You've got it!!!! Michelle is my favorite. No matter what, I will always hold her skating near to my heart. She is the only skater who has transcended the sport and made it magic!! She takes you on an emotional journey. It is her gift!!! Go Michelle!!!
