Is there a particular time of the year that coach and skater enter into a contract for the coming season? Does the skater pay the coach's travel, living and other expenses when they go to competitions?

While coaching changes can occur at any time, generally speaking coaching changes are made at the end of the competitive season so that the new coach and the skater can make decisions and work on the programs for the new season together. If a skater's competitive season ends after Nationals it may be then. For skaters who are touring with COI at the moment, they may not turn their mind to their coaching situation until the tour starts to wind down. The critical thing is to make the coaching decision before starting work on the new season's programs.

When your coach goes with you to competitions, you pay all of their travel expenses. If the coach has several skaters going to the same event, the skaters will split the coach's travel and living costs. For international events, the federation covers the coach's travel expenses.

Wow, I didnt know skaters need to pay their coaches trips too. I thought they just pay them for coaching only.

and that is probably one reason it cost an elite skater about $100,000+ a year----or so I read recently---to compete. Thanks for the information Dragonlady.

Elite skaters have slightly different arrangements with their coaches. Lower level skaters contract for blocks of time - in the US it's in increments of 20 minutes, in Canada, its 15, so that in a one hour session the coach will have private lessons with 3 or 4 students as the case may be, and the coach will give out a bill every month for very junior students, every two weeks for mid-level students.

Elite skaters generally contract for the season and often it's for a percentage of the skater's earnings for that season. This means that the more successful the student is over the course of the season, the more money the coach will make too. Such arrangements usually include moneys earned touring and in ice shows too.

Wow, having a coach is really expensive! >.<

How do skaters manage to pay for all the expenses?
