Aw, man. The first thing I saw when I opened the thread was the name "Michelle" in first group. My heart actually skipped a beat, but then I realized it was Michelle Cantu from Mexico. Oh well. I knew it wasn't possible anyway.

I am pulling for Elene Gedevanishvili!!! I love this skater!!! I don't think she has a chance at gold - nor do I think the judges would give it to her if she legitimately won it (the "wait your turn" policy is still alive and well, nestled in the PCS) - but I do think she could medla. If she does well, the skate order will not be favorable to Emily - who lacks everything that shines in Elene!

Emily should be below Elena, Elene, Nakano, Rochette and Kostner at least.

Also Emily's stronger in the short program...not the long.

From which country does Elene Gedevanishvili come? Is she the one from the Oly's that did pretty good?

ScrappyTheOwl
March 21st, 2006, 10:36 AM
Elene's from Georgia. She did pretty well at the Olympics (6th in Short, 13th in Long). She should do well in the short at Worlds ... she just has this habit of running out of energy in the second half of her long program, and/or popping/doubling.

Elene is from the Republic of Georgia. And yes, she was the big surprise at the Olympics, and the latest international sweetheart of skating! The judges love her, the fans love her, I love her! My only concern is wondering where she is in the puberty project. She is wonderfully athletic and still very petite and feminine, powerful, beguiling, refreshing. But given her age, if she is still pre-puberty, she could have a real struggle. She's awfully - I guess one would say "small." But for now, she captured my attention and my heart. And I think that barring injury, she could be in the next "Big 3" - Mao, Kim, and Gedevanishvili. Yeah, I would stay around skating for that!

Thanks for posting the groups :clap . I am so out of the loop on this, I don't even know what day the ladies skate or what time. Just don't have quite the same level of interest since Michelle is not skating this year :sad.

Well, Kostner and Rochette are not exactly dead.

Shine, I disagree. I think that Kostner for sure is pretty much "dead." I like Joannie, but she is no spring chicken, and she just doesn't seem to have the "top three" goods.

We'll all have our favorites - and its normal for them to be different. I'm looking for something interesting enough to make me part with travel money - and it definitely won't be Rochette or Kostner. I have never seen anything in Kostner but speed and gangliness. She seems like a nice girl. Joannie has real class, and she is very pretty, and powerful - qualities I like in a lady skater. But something is missing for me. She has a sort of hot rod quality that sometimes lacks finesse. I would be happy for her if she continued to improve and did well - but I won't spend money to see it it just might happen. Kostner - I really dislike her skating.

ITA with everything word in your post.

I also agree with u about Joannie and Kostner. Both are sweet girls but without that 'something special' factor for me. Both are still better than Emily.

I wish Joannie would have gone back to Firebird or whatever program that grab the audience. She would fare better using that program.

most skaters, if they don't have it by 20, they aren't going to have it. there are a few exceptions like Irina and Maria though.

March 21st, 2006, 01:59 PM
Lavendar, I agree about Firebird. That program was so exciting and powerful, and really was a great vehicle for her strengths. I just don't think her new program works for her - its not bad, but not that great.

Krista, I agree with you about age 20. That's the sort of critical age, I think. Sad to think of 20 as "old", but I think by age 16, most lady skaters have what they are going to have, and its a question of developing some maturity and sophistication over the next 3 or 4 years. I want to say, "Joannie, prove me wrong!" But I can't think of any examples of ladies being significantly better at 20 than they were at 16 or 17. Carolina has gone downhill, if anything. Jennie went downhill. Angela was at her best around 16/17; her artistry improved but her skating stagnated. Jenny Don? Everyone raved about her at 14 and 15. Onda and Ando petered out. Julia is one exception I can think of; I think she was better at 21; she just sort of got a little better every year, then reached her max...and has been decllining. Where was the promise of Sokolova? of Vika?

That's why Michelle's longevity amazes me. She was improving right up to the time that injury became her nemesis.

I agree with you missmary. Michelle was improving. Although there will always be someone who says she wasn't. Her skating has taken so many shapes. Within the last few years her jumps were higher and she increased her speed.

Actually, Irina improved also (after 20). Although I think her improvements were on a smaller scale.

I also think Michelle is improving with age. I think after they hit 20 they really have a grasp on what life is all about and not just mememe, well for some that is.

And, is Qualifying Group A or B better to be in? And why is Sasha in Group A? :D

Qualifying groups are placed based on placements from the previous years' Worlds. Irina won, so she would've been in Group A, Sasha Group B, Caro Group A, Michelle Group B and so on. Since Irina is not attending, Sasha is the next highest finisher and therefore starts off the selection. Then the unseeded skaters are placed alphabatically by Country, then name, but I'm not sure which Country starts it off, Canada since it's the host?

The top 3 of each qualifier end up in the last skate group for the LP. The only real problem this now is that under COP, scores are carried over, not placements, so even if a skater has the 4th highest score overall, and is in 4th for their QR, they will still have to skate in the 2nd to last group.

Arakawa also improved after age 20.

well...the exception can be made for certain skaters. I've noticed, if they've had some success at all they improve out of excitement and encouragement that they might have more success (Shizuka winning the 2004 worlds...then she won the 2006 Olympics). Joannie is beautiful, but is very bland (except for the Firebird). Carolina absolutely drives me up the wall. She's got the most emotionless face when she skates, her costumes don't do a thing for her, and her skating is sloppy. Sorry if i offended anyone, JMO

OH...and...quit bashing Sasha...she's all we really have left in skating anymore...if Michelle doesn't come back...it surely won't be Kimmie or Emily winning big world competitions for the USA - it'll be Sasha. Be thankful for her

Or we could just root for who we like, American or not. Call me unpatriotic, but I could care less what country a skater is from when I make my judgement in if I'm rooting for them. I am not thankful for her and would rather see USA not win the big competitions if she's our representative. Let the best skaters win, American or not.

And I do believe Kimmie has the goods to make it big time.

I agree about Carolina, but not about Joannie. She is a beautiful and captivating performer.

I actually love JR's programs this year much more than in previous years -- If you've had a chance to read her online diary, she tells a touching story about the music she selected for this year's long -- and I looove her short program -- what can I say, I'm a Madonna fan :D

I'm hoping that the fact that worlds is in Calgary doesn't put too much pressure on her...

I was happy when Shizuka won.
I'm not "thankful" for Sasha, in the skating world I like who I like wheather they are from Japan, Russia or USA.
I'm just not patriotic when it comes to skating.
I also think Kimmie might emerge next season a force to be reckoned with. I have a feeling she has gianed a lot of experience from this season.

I am not thankful for her and would rather see USA not win the big competitions if she's our representative. Let the best skaters win, American or not.

Thank you. Who cares where the skaters are from. Michelle will always be my the fav but after her Elene, Yu-na and Mao are my distant favs coming up and they are all from different countries and I love it.

And I do believe Kimmie has the goods to make it big time.

I agree about Carolina, but not about Joannie. She is a beautiful and captivating performer. Kaz, I've always thought this. The best skater deserves to win regardless of country. I can't tell you how many times I've taken serious heat for this opinion. I don't care what people think, never did. I don't need to be part of a crowd. BTW, could someone give Elene G's strong points? Is she a strong spinner or jumper? Thanks.

Elene's a pretty well-rounded skater. She can do the triple-triples, she can get her levels up on her spins (which are pretty nice--she usually has good speed, doesn't drop her leg for donuts), she has a good musical sense at this point (should develop more).

She just has some stamina or concentration issues in the long--she can go out, hit her 2A+3T and her triple-triple, then pop some stuff or make some technical errors (at the Olympics, she did a third triple toe--which didn't count).

Fixing that should would come with time--with competitions and experience.

People are being really mean to sasha!!!!

i'm very thankful she was at the olympics, at least she made things interesting...yes she may have made two big mistakes in her long program but it was alive, passionate, and beautiful even with the mistakes...even her passion coming around the corner before her triple loop, after she had already fallen twice, was incredible...she really sold herself and i loved it...enough said

i really hope carolina does well!! i think she's a good skater and CAN still become a great one...same for kimmie

Emily is ahead on the TES? Carolina was ahead on the PCS?

Emily-TES: 53.15 (1 fall)
CK- TES: 49.6 (no falls)

Emily PCS: 50.56
CK PCS: 52.96

Did Emily complete a 3/3 and Carolina not?

I'd seriously bet money on the Triple Loop, if she didn't pop or double it and fall on something else.

It's possible Fernandez's 4.00 deduction wasn't all falls. She could have incurred a time deduction, illegal element deduction, or something else.

Hughes got a Tech. score less than a point off what she got at the Olympics--meaning she probably did 4 triples, doubled a triple, and fell on a triple, same as she did there.

Kostner got a Tech. score about 6 points higher than at the Olympics--where she only did 2 triples and doubled or popped everything else. So she probably did an extra triple or two, and maybe another with a fall or something.

An interesting note: Hughes PCS score was about the same (0.41 difference), while Kostner's PCS was about 3 points off her Torino score.

Yes, you'd see a deduction if she fell.

That's about all you call tell from the preliminary scores: No deductions = No falls. But no falls does not necessarily mean no deductions, since you can get deductions for other things.

I can see how a person could get behind the music in their program if they had a couple of falls and then end up finishing after the music, thereby getting another deduction.

Yeah, you get a 1.00 deduction for every 5 seconds over the time limit.

You technically have 4 minutes, plus or minus 10 seconds (meaning your routine can be between 3:50 and 4:10) ... a lot of girls are planning 4:10 programs so if you're off the end even a second you get a deduction. I haven't seen many time deductions this year, though.

No. Top 3 from each group go into the last group for the short. Ranking/placement determines your placement in the start order, not the actual scores.

Johnny actually outscored Klimkin in the qualifying, but Johnny was 4th in his group and Klimkin was 3rd in his group. So Klimkin got to go in the last group.

Edited because I can't spell anything today :P

Yeah, but what's even more interesting is that just .24 points separate Emily Hughes from the Finnish Flash, Kiira Korpi!!! (who is a much better skater than Emily, IMO; certainly more pleasant to watch). It's tight at the top.

Rankings/placements only determine the warm-up groups, and who qualifies from the qualifiying round (qualifiying groups are not random--they select skaters for each group based on past performance then use the Top 15 from each group to diversify the field a bit).

It's the points that will matter in the end, though. You could theoretically be 7th in all phases of the competition and still win if your total was the highest.

From the last Sunday in October through the first Sunday in April, Calgary uses Mountain Standard Time.

I never really paid attention to Worlds...so i have a question. Other than obviously to qualify, how important are qualifying scores? What percent of the total?

ScrappyTheOwl
March 22nd, 2006, 03:56 PM
How much does the qualifying round score count for?

The qualifiying score is multiplied by 0.25. For example, a skater who scores 100.00 in the Qualifiying Round only gets to apply 25%, which is 25.00, of it towards her total score.

Short program and long program scores count in full.

ScrappyTheOwl
March 22nd, 2006, 04:03 PM
So could you theoretically have a really crappy qualifying score (but still qualify) and still win?

Yup.

Scores get closer when you factor them.

Skater A: 150.00 x 0.25 = 37.50
Skater B: 110.00 x 0.25 = 27.50

That brings the gigantic 40-point difference down to 10.

Let's Skater B makes a comeback at this point, where Skater A does a good short and a similar long to the qualifying, and is out-skated in both the short and long by Skater B.

SP:
Skater A: 62.00
Skater B: 67.00
LP:
Skater A: 150.00
Skater B: 156.00

TOTALS:
Skater A: 249.50
Skater B: 250.50

Ever heard of Daylight Saving Time? Whenever you move your clocks forward/backward, you're observing Daylight Saving Time.

When a city/county/whatever does this, they switch time zones.

Calgary observes daylight saving time from the first Sunday through the last Sunday in October -- when they do this, they're in the Mountain Time Zone.

The rest of the year, they are in the Mountain Standard Time Zone.

i *THINK* that MK's technique was just different from other skaters as a result of being coached by frank. the technique he teaches, if i remember correctly, is like wrapping a flag pole, where one arm is to stay straight and the other should wrap into it...lots of people hate that technique

it's possible she developed some technique problems with it later on, but i think the main reason it got pulled was because it can hurt her hips

in response to an above post***i think the last time she landed the 3l was 2004 worlds LP...and maybe in the cheese fest soon after...but she landed it at natls and worlds that year

and she fell on the 3t not the 3l in the sp...she did take a hard fall on the 3l in the long though...one of her most painful looking falls ever actually

People were debating whether Calgary was Central time vs Mountain time and the poster did not say Mountain Daylight Time, just Mountain TIme. "Mountain Time" could be MST or MDT. If you refer to a specific time zone, it is STANDARD time by default, unless DAYLIGHT is specified, at least that's how we refer to time here. That's why the message was confusing. OK????

Do you look like a supermodel or? :bow And you have to know how to beat the men at their own game. You could overhear them spouting off facts-and-figures about numbers and statistics and it will totally make them pee theirself when you "out" them over their fabrications :D

LOL--I didn't mean to imply I looked like a supermodel. There's just kind of a stigma against female CS majors who don't wear glasses, walk hunched over (supposedly this implies they spend too much time on the computer) and have a pile of books in their arms that go over their head. That's not me.

YES I've heard of DST. Why do you need to be so sarcastic. OK????

Actually, I posted the original and I thought I bolded both to show there was a difference ... I didn't mean to be overly sacracastic. I thought maybe you didn't know what Daylight savings was.

It actually is okay to drop the Daylight ... whenever you don't see Standard or Daylight in the time zone (like just Eastern Time, Pacific Time, or Mountain Time), it's implied that it's Daylight Saving Time.

Another example:
Eastern Standard Time versus Eastern Time -- Eastern Time is actually Eastern Daylight Time.

But-scoience is my best subject, and I'll probably major in technology.

Hey, that's cool. Like I said, most Comp Sci majors are guys. But, there are a lot of girls who are in the engineering depts here; I know several girls who are chemical engineering majors. I totally admire people going for technology majors!! I could not do it, everytime I walk into Kep Hall here(where all the math, science, etc classes are)I don't feel like I belong LOL!

Sorry, I'm totally off topic... Go Fumie et al! Hopefully, Tuggy will make the cut!

If you are refereing to the Sasha statement don't worry about it. Maybe use "I" statements, like "I am thankful..." Otherwise it sounds like you are telling others what to think. I hope I got the right post to respond to. :P

Not everyone here likes Sasha. It is afterall the Michelle Kwan forum. I admit I didn't always care for her and at time she still gets on my nerves. Maybe it's a good thing that Irina didn't compete here. She'd be lucky to make the medal stand. If she was being "tightened" at the Olys without inflated scores, imagine how it would be for her here; and I DID check out the panel of judges for the women in qualifying. It listed their names but not the country they're from.

That's good for Yoshie.

ScrappyTheOwl
March 22nd, 2006, 11:00 PM
Yeah, only 48.82 TES for Onda. She didn't have any deductions (meaning, no falls) so she must have had some doubles and/or pops.

ETA: Actually, I checked some old protocols and a score around 50 is good for her (maybe with one pop). She has a lot of Level 1 and 2 elements.

KwansPrayerWarrior
March 22nd, 2006, 11:02 PM
Well Sasha with 2 falls would get her about 116 and into the lead

And that's what sux about this whole friggin' establishment :grump

Michelle is the End-All-Be-All for me too. But I have yet to meet/see/hear anyone with a heart of gold like Chelle, save Fumie. Fumie is like Michelle, and so is Tuggy. Tuggy is so down to earth, compassionate, emotional, such a sweet spirit, and is why I love Tuggy like Michelle.

Sasha in third place. Both falls, I suspect. I doubt it's a time violation.

Lavender, isn't it nice to be wrong. I know, she scored too high with 2 falls, and there's still a SP and LP by Saturday, but maybe it's really Fumie's turn. I would like that very much!

Sasha would have been been way in the lead without the falls. She is still in this with them.
You would think two falls would put you way behind. Nice to see they didn't hold her up in the sense she isn't in the lead with the falls but the scores are still way too high with 2 falls.

She is into 5th overall, 7 pts beind Rochette. By the time it's factored, though, it's only about 2 points.

Wow...I don't care how much Sasha falls I'm always shock...especially with a golden opportunity.

I do think she's having a problem with her groin. However it's nice to see that 2 falls won't put her over a pretty clean Fumie. Wow and Kimmie has never been ahead of Sasha.

It's better now but she had only one fall then and no signs of injury. I do think she was more favored last year internationally than this year.

WOW!!!! Too bad for Sasha, I'm wondering if the lack of training time or possible injury might be a factor for her in these World Championships. But wow, I'm shocked at the low score.

Good job Fumie, Joannie and Kimmie though!

Yeah .. I've been keeping a list of factored scores.

Here's the Top 10 for both groups, so far:
1. Joannie Rochette = 29.28
2. Fumie Suguri = 28.47
3. Kimmie Meissner = 28.46
4. Yukari Nakano = 27.79
5. Sasha Cohen = 27.59
6. Emily Hughes = 25.68
7. Carolina Kostner = 25.64
8. Kiira Korpi = 25.44
9. Sarah Meier = 24.64

Sasha behind Kimmie! Now that part is a surprise. And Kimmie and Fumie being virtually tied.

Of course, Sasha hasn't blown her shot at the gold, but I wonder if her press quotes about how she was going to enjoy the competition more because of the less dense field are going to come back to haunt her.

Yes I love being wrong sometimes. I too would love it to be Fumie's turn.

What if Joannie wins...that would be pretty crazy but I would be happy for her also since I don't think a lady from Canada has reach the top of the world podium. Well not since I've been watching skating.

Well I agree that Sasha still has a chance since her short is pretty hard to beat.

Probably. When DOESN'T her foot go into her mouth when she thinks more highly of herself than she ought to? That's a dangerous thing to do. Gets you in trouble everytime.
